The Hobbit - starts filming March 21

He needs a proper beard. I know Kili and Fili had shorter beards, but they're young'uns, so that's kinda understandable, but Thorin just looks like a scruffy ren faire performer.

If he wasn't described in the books as a bizzarly attractive dwarf... this is just dumb.

He sure looked like a dwarf in the old toons.

I guess they don't have enough Aragorn types in this story and they want the lil girls to stay interested! LOL!

I just thought Thorin was supposed to be older. So far my favorite, spot on dwarves are Bombur, Balin (one that looks like Santa) and Gloin and Oin.

yeah the above are good. but the rest sucks

im pretty sure im not gonna watch the movie in theatres, because those wanna be dwarfs take it away for me.
sorry, but its just stupid taking such an important character and ****ing him up
not getting my money if they dont change that

I'm not getting that seriously pissed off...

I trust in Peter Jackson. I highly doubt he's going to mess anything up. Even with the addition of this female elf. And when stuff eventually DOES leak on the internet, and there's a grand hatred for it, he'll more than likely reconsider. Hence why they film so much and they have the best digital artists around.

im just saying, if those dwarfs look like that in the movie, im not watching it in theatre.
and i hope i am wrong

I trust in Peter Jackson.

Yup.

Nothing will stop me seeing these on opening night. Richard Armaitage is a great casting choice for Thorin, big beard or little beard. And while I agree that some of the costume and make up decisions are not obvious or conventional, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. This is going to be a spectacular picture.

I don't trust Peter Jackson. Sure the movies are good but they could have been better. From what I have read about Tolkien he would have hated the movies.

Tolkien never believed that a film could be made efficiently. It's not that he never wanted one made, he was more or less indifferent to it. Knowing that the technology at the time, and the production values would never measure up to what he had written. When the cartoon-'ed version were talked about and eventually made, he put his head down in shame. A cartoon?? Why not something better? In fact, Tolkien didn't even under stand the popularity of LotR and The Hobbit, and he didn't get his fans either. He didn't think they understood the magnitude of his work, and was always a little put off at the fact that everyone recognized his fantastical work, over his legitimate linguistic work and the fact he was a Beowulf scholar.

I think you're also confusing Tolkien with his son Christopher; who has widely shunned the movies and anything to do with Lord of the Rings in the media. Though apparently Christopher and J. R. R. were known to have differences and scuffles. This also has to do with the fact that Christopher and his son, no longer speak. Christopher's grandson, Royd, was IN the RotK as a Gondorian guard. Christopher Tolkien has be pretty open to the fact that everyone who likes these movies can kiss his royal ass. Everyone knows he's an old fart who, since his father died, has capitalized on his father's estate and tried to make everything his own; by digging so deep into his father's work, and publishing every last piece he can find, after he's added his own "renderings". Whether his father would have wanted it or not. And while we may have never seen some of Tolkien's greater works if it wasn't for Christopher, (The Sil being almost completely adapted by him), alot of people have criticized him for tampering with his father's stuff. Tolkien was the genius here, let us not forget.

Also, let us not forget that Tolkien gave over the rights to LotR and the Hobbit to Saul Zaentz, a film producer, (the guy that's causing so many troubles with The Hobbit, because he has an iron grip on the rights, yet he let the Rankin Bass Hobbit be made, along with the Bashki versions...*shudder*), who he knew good and well wanted to adapt the novels into films. So...yeahhh.....

I think Tolkien would have been semi-pleased with the movies. I'm sure he would have had a TON of complaints and changes, but one has to remember that books can not be fully translated to film. In order for a viewer to stay entertained and to fully follow the story line, full depth can not be achieved as it is in your imagination as your read the book. Everyone has a different imagination and a different way your mind lays out the landscape as Tolkien describes it, and the way the characters look and act.

If you ask me, I think PJ, Weta, John Howe, Alan Lee, and everyone else involved did the best that they could and gave it their all. While I don't agree with some additions and removals, I think they laid out how I view the world of Middle Earth, quite beautifully. No one else in the movie market could ever top that. The cast, the crew, the designers; everything fell into place.

*gets off high horse*

I can't wait for this film! But I really ought to pull myself together and read the book!, my last attempt was about 8 years ago, when I was 11. I think I read half the book, a Swedish edition that is. And if I recall the translation is accused of being..well a bit too liberal.

However, Jackson is my favorite director, and I trust him completely, so this film will be epic, no doubts. But of course, I understand every hardcore fans out there who has their fears. As the hard core HP fan I am I know perfectly well how film adaptions can ruin things completely and make you feel anger you didn't believe you had in you.. But again, Jackson is the best!

I think it's so funny Bloom will be in the film, and I agree that his role as Legolas is the only one you feel is alright. Perhaps that's because the limited number of lines he actually has in the three films.

And btw, great post CelticRuins! I finally got the Christopher case. I have been quite confused about him..

For me, the reason it's "okay" to have him in the film is that the dwarves actually go to where Legolas lives, even though Tolkien hadn't created the character at that time. It makes perfect sense that he would be there during those events.

However, since he's not actually mentioned in the book, he'd better just stand in the back, look pretty, and keep his mouth shut. :)

Yes, that's the reason why it's okay in that perspective :) If you can't justify any additions in a reasonable way they shouldn't be made, but this case makes sense.

The reason why I think it's funny is because I think it's kinda ironic. He's quite a poor actor and his performances post-lotr have been highly questionable , but he's allowed to return to the greatest film production of all time! Many must think Jackson is mad.. But he did Legolas quite nicley, and he's perfectly capable of standing in the background looking pretty

That's cause the only thing Orlando is good at is to stand around and look pretty, with the occasional action sequence.

Oh and to state the obvious :rolleyes :lol

It would be completely natural for Legolas to be in The Hobbit. Though never spoken of in the book, he was most certainly there, or atleast..."around". Especially if they do any sort of tie-in at the end of the second movie. He was one of the main elves in care of Gollum and making sure Gollum stayed put in Mirkwood...he's probably one of the ones that let him escape ><!! That's how he knows Aragorn, for Aragorn and Gandalf dragged Gollum over the Dead Marshes and dropped him off in the Mirkwood elves' care. He's also the one that has to bring up the news of Gollum's escape during the Council of Elrond. Obviously he was his father's only child, or his eldest, hence why he sent him to the Council, and all the more reasoning for bringing him up in the movie as a cameo!

Yeah, this movie looks great, and if people are gonna boycott it because Thorin doesn't look like their idea of a dwarf, great. Shorter line at the concession stand for me!

Hearing all these complaints about the look and (potential) feel of the films makes me glad I don't read books AT ALL. I mean, I love the LOTR movies, and I had no idea that Gandalf's sword glowed around orcs in the books. Having Sting glow really made the sword special IMO, and I think having all elvish blades react like that would make Frodo's sword seem less important (and awesome).

To me the books were like torture to read. Why did everything have seven names.

ranger, strider, aragorn, ilsidurs heir, king of gondor, duidine (sp?), neumanorian?

ENOUGH!!!!

The movies are so much more enjoyable.

Can't wait for the movie, but I have to admit...I always have some kind of apprehension that they are not going to match with what I imagined while reading the book :)
