The Graflex Legacy Builds - Office Set Up!

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Now with videos!

That looks great. That's the best blue I've seen. I've been hesitant to have a graflex done, not only because I'm no good at doing that on my own, but I usually see a blue that I feel is too dark. Great job on this!

Thanks! I'm right there with you, the dark blue just looks a little off now that I've got this baby going.

Here's some experimenting with green! I've always loved green as a lightsaber color, especially Luke's from ROTJ.

Great work on the colours, I was wondering the same thing so ordered a RB-B-W and a B-B-W to test them, the other left over will be used for my TFU2 build.

Not like the lightsabers colors/sounds are 100 percent consistant from scene to scene in the original films either. That's why it cracks me up when people bash the new ones for it.
Guess the old films have built in immunity via nostalgia.

Dude, you really nailed that blue... that green graflex tho... that's some hot stuff :love

Right? ;) I always felt that green just fits really well with the Graflex style

Thanks! I haven't messed with any royal blue yet, so I wonder how that would work out.

It's definitely never all that consistent, but it always did appear more of a lighter blue in most scenes than the PT. Obviously due to the filming and FX techniques of the time caused it, and the PT was always more consistent due to more reliable tech for the saber's FX. I don't have a hate for the darker blue color or anything, I just find the lighter blue more pleasing to look at. That, and it's way brighter since it includes the white dye instead of just blue!

I like how it looked this time, especially in the snowy forest, I really don't nitpick the differences. This time they had the actual specialized glow rods.

Agreed! The use of actual glowing props definitely let it feel more "real" since it gave off it's own natural lighting instead of it all being an after effect. The only thing I don't like about the new Graflex from TFA is the sound change. It just doesn't sound right to me with the low activation sound and deeper hum.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Now with videos!

Blame Ben Burtt's apprentice Matthew Wood? Some other guy griped there wasn't enough sound during the duel of the planet breaking up until the end.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Beginning a Crystal Chamber

Hello again!

So now that I've gotten all of that blade plug stuff out of the way, I can focus on a new part of this Graflex project that I wanted to tackle: A crystal chamber!

I am starting this with one thing in mind, and that's a chamber that is completely hand built with found parts or pieces that I carved and cut all by hand. No machining or lathing, just pain staking hand filing and some dremeling :p I really just wanted to do something that wasn't the standard "crank out mass produced parts," and I really wanted to draw inspiration from pieces that I saw at stores and thrift shops. I also stayed away from using my CAD programs to come up with designs, because I just don't want this to feel planned out. Maybe that's crazy, but I really wanted to go back to the roots of saber building.

I started off with gathering some parts from some thrift shops and such. Misc. clock parts, random plumbing parts, brass sheets, 3 mm tubes, and some nickel plated 1.25" pipes. I took some graph paper and a piece of PVC and started tracing and cutting random ideas in it until I came up with one that I liked.

Rough, but hey, it's just a concept to help me see how it'll look at it's basic form.

So I got the ideas that I like and transferred it back over to the brass tube.

Bam, rough outline cut. I'll clean up these cuts with some needle files when I'm feeling up to it.

Next I got my brass sheets out and started making some fins because I like fin designed chambers. :p

I cut 8 of them for now to see how I like them. I am unfortunately going to have to hand shape these all after the template I have. It's going to take a while, but I don't mind.

Last for now, I got the idea to "grow" my own crystal to use for this project. I got this little kit from Hobby Lobby and I wanted to try it, so for 7 bucks I figured why not. I mixed it all together and now I have to let it sit for 4-7 days. Good thing I have fins to prepare!

For now, that's all I have. It'll probably take me a few weeks to finalize all this and put it together, so we'll see how it goes!

Thanks guys!
