The Graflex Legacy Builds - Office Set Up!

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Beginning a Crystal Chamber

I love your builds, that brass chamber piece with the gear on the end is a great piece. The whole build is awesome! I've said it before, but you and SlothFurnace is what drove me towards electronics and chambers. Can't wait to see this finished.

Hello !

Just awesome ! Can't wait for the final look!

Thanks guys. Tom, I definitely don't think I'm anywhere near the level of Sloth, he's a damn legend, but I appreciate it :$

Just a small picture update

The crystal looks pretty cool so far, and it's only been about 20 hours. We'll see how it turns out in 3 to 4 days.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Beginning a Crystal Chamber

Very cool progress you're making. Well done.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Now with videos!

Just having some fun today while on my off time. No work on a crystal chamber yet, but I may do that this weekend. Best part is, I get paid no matter what I'm doing in my off time :p

my whole family has been in the service, I will be honest and tell you I don't have the guts or nerves to do what you do for a living. being raised around soldiers, navy, and military police, and all 3 of my great, great uncles fighting and coming home from WWII. they always told me and my brother and sister to always thank a vet when you see them. no matter where I am when I see a vet I always make sure to stop what I'm doing, shake their hand and thank them for their service. so now it's your turn, thank you for your service I really appreciate the sacrifices you have made in your life to protect our freedom. thank you

Thanks! It's going pretty well so far

Crystal update - Day 3

Looking pretty good! It's grown tremendously in the past 2 days, and it's starting to form some really promising looking crystal structures. I'll keep you guys updated when on it. For now, the chamber portion is on stand by as I get through some of my classes that I'm working on right now.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Forming my own Crystal

Crystal Update

So after about 4 ish days, I liked what I saw and decided to remove the crystal from the container.

It's relatively large, and I noticed that while it was still in this "growing" stage, it was fragile enough to influence it in the direction that I wanted. So I started breaking it into pieces, using a razor blade and a file to form some smaller crystals.

After some time messing around with it, I got this little guy going, and I really like him so I tested him out in the little crystal holder piece I had. He fit pretty well!

I really like the arctic style blue color it has to it. Nice and bright but not too overwhelming, and it really came in handy when lighting it all up.

I started testing it with a white LED

It matches the blade color almost perfectly!

I decided to throw a blue LED under it just to see what would happen, and I definitely don't like that. It gives off this purple-ish tone to it, and it just isn't what I'm looking for.

So that's all for now, but I'd say I've made some good progress. I don't know how many of you have read the book, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, but in the book there is a long passage that explains Luke creating his green lightsaber in a hut based off of some books left behind. It describes how he was unable to find a proper crystal for his saber, and that he was forced to create a synthetic crystal with a blast furnace and whatever materials he had. It was the first Star Wars book that I had ever read as a kid, and that scene always stuck in my mind because I was always so fascinated by building my own lightsaber. It was the only book from the Star Wars universe that I had, and I think I read it about 10 times between ages 7 and 10. To me, I'm being Luke right now: I'm taking the small bits of knowledge passed on through teachings of others (members of this site) and synthetically creating my own crystal for my lightsaber in a hut in the desert (my room at my duty station :p). I'm pretty much being the hero that child hood me always wanted to be, and it's crazy.

Anyways, that's all I have for now!

Also, for those that don't know, I started another blade plug interest thread for our up and coming MPP plug design. Check it out if you are interested!

Thanks guys

Dude, this is so awesome I literally, as they say, can't even. Such a cool idea, and it came out great!

Yeah, I would have never thought of doing this, great idea. One of the coolest builds i have seen. I like the whole "Jesse James" approach of hand making every single piece.

That is sick!

Thanks guys. This is turning out better than expected so we'll see how it picks up this weekend

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Shaping the Chamber Fins

Alright so pretty big update today.

Last night I went pretty hard on myself for getting a lot of the heavy lifting done with this project, so I spent all night working on it. I took brass sheets and cut out a basic square, and taped them all together, layer by layer. Then I cut out my pattern for my fins and taped that over top and began using my dremel to shape them up.

Then I took my two sets of tubing, using one to hold everything in place and one as a spacer. I began cutting up the spacers with the set lengths that I calculated for the size of my chamber.

Then it was just a matter of sliding pieces over each other until I got a nice result

Pretty sweet looking :cool

I cut the second base piece out for the top chamber piece. Then I took some some drill bits and gradually drilled out the original 1/8th hole to fit a 5 mm LED. That was pretty loud...

I capped off the end of the tubing, and stood it up. I attached the base pieces and the crystal and fixed them in place.

There's still more work to be done, but I just thought I'd update you for now!

Thanks guys

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Shaping the Chamber Fins

Fantastic work.

Thanks. It's been a good learning experience and a real eye opener.

So, really big update today.

I finished stacking all of the components on top of each other to get a good idea of what it looked like.

Then I had to start making tiny adjustments here and there to make it a nice snug fit in the brass tube.

I started braiding 30 gauge wire through the chamber into the battery and speaker housing. That 30 gauge wire is awesome, it hides really well and can fit through pretty much every piece without being seen. It's also really strong, too. I decided to make it all one piece inside of the Graflex so that it can be taken out easily to work on if necessary

Helping hands are a lifesaver for a lightsaber..... :D

They really are though

Once it was all wired up, I started assembling it all together. I put a rubber band around the top where the wires are to keep them housed easily.

I don't know why that photo is blurry... That's dumb, but whatever.

So, upon assembly, it's finally complete. Feast your eyes, ladies and gentlemen, on my first ever fully complete custom crystal reveal.

This thing is awesome. It added a really nice weight to the Graflex, and of course the visual portion.

This was a really great learning experience for myself, and I hope for others that are looking in on my build. This was a completely 100% hand built chamber using nothing but a dremel, some hand files, some simple hand made designs and a some found parts in various stores. All in all, the build materials (besides the electronics) was maybe 20 to 30 dollars.

To those that have always aspired to have nice looking chambers and professional looking builds, look no further than your own hands and that note pad in your house. Everything you need is essentially in front of you; lathes and mills make it easier, but it's not available to everyone, including myself. Visualization is the hardest part for most people, and my biggest tip is to think simple. If you really look at the build, it's nothing more than a tube with a few windows cut in it, 6 fins, and some aluminum tubes. It's all extremely simple designs and ideas, but when stacked together, it turns into a great looking design. So, don't worry too much about having those extravagant designs with crazy pipes and tubing and lights flashing everywhere.

Anyways, it's been a lot of fun. I can really look back through this build thread and see all the great times I had learning new things and the hunt of collecting all of my Graflex's. Who knows what my next build will be, but I look forward to it.

Thanks guys!

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Completed Crystal Chamber

Are you just using a battery/speaker chassis from TCSS inside your brass tube?

Yes I am! I forgot to include that in my build log, but I sanded down the battery hold just a little to fit it snugly inside of the brass tube.

Re: The Graflex Legacy Builds - Completed Crystal Chamber

This came out great! What kind of sound board is that?
