The Flash:

So I've been considering a The Flash costume for next year. I figure bright red, the lightning, the ladies will be all up ons as they say.
This version of the flash, the Warner Bros Animated version.

I'm picking the flash because I can't possibly pull off Batman (not nearly big enough). And I'm not going with Green Lantern because the way I'd want the ring would be too complicated, and never get done.

So what should I make it out of? I was considering a kit-bashed wetsuit, but cost and sheer temperature are a major problem there.

As an upper limit, no, I don't have any latex-working capabilities where I am. So the best I could do is a heavily modified wetsuit (think Batman Begins, but with cut foam, glue, and fabric overlay)

I dunno. is this something that's not worth doing, because the only possible methods look terrible, or is this a reasonable idea?

Never underestimate the power of Spandex. (and hey, you've got a few months to diet and do tons of sit ups if you need some help filling the suit properly).

I've sen a few spandex costume sites that have full bodysuits for a reasonable price, and this SITE has a pretty nice cowl for only $25,

Be sure to let us know if you move forward.

I'm a big advocate of the conventional spandex route - good place to start is by doing a search for "red zentai" on eBay. You can get a full body suit with hood for about $50, they'll make it to measure for you, open up the mouth and eye holes for free and probably even do the lightning bolts for a little extra cash if you're not into hacking it up yourself. I think some of the sellers even do ready-made Flash suits. I've never used one of these, but I've heard that they're pretty decent quality.

Another option might be to do something in leather/pleather, but I don't know anything about working in those materials.

Hey,

We sculpted that mask for Rubies Costume Co. You can see the sculpt pics here: http://www.xtremedesignfx.com/sculpts/flashadult.htm

The sculpt turned out nice, however the production of it has been....um...lacking. They cast it out of vinyl and slit it up the back and used foamies for the lighting bolts...ugh. They had me sculpt it LARGE and we aticitpated that they would at least make them out of latex, which would allow them to shrink. Well, since they went the vinyl route...no shrinkage. I don't think it would fit anyone.

Also, fyi, we did a full Flash costume awhile ago, and are working on another now...same style. Flash Page

Hope that helps.

I did a TV show Flash suit a few years ago...we even flocked the rubber suit to look like the TV show costume.
It was done in 3 days...from start to finish. As a result, it certainly could have been better but it worked for what it was needed for.
I still have all the molds and once this period of total madness passes I'll cast up a new suit and finish it properly. The cowl was meant to be bonded to the torso but we just didnt have the time.

Sorry for some of the large pics, I have to resize them on my website.

And I love that sculpt. Really captured the comic book look and feel. :thumbsup

dang David.

I used to watch that show religiously as a kid and i always thought the costume was fantastic.

cant belive that all these years later that i can speak to the person that made it.

Wow, that was a lot of really solid responses.

I forgot to mention that I'm planning to make the cowl myself. I want to try to get a way of incorporating silver-white lenses for the eyes, and build it in such a way that the eyebrow region actually a separate mobile piece, spirit gummed to my head. I'm hopeing if i can plan it out right, I can get the expressions showing throguh by deformation of the area around the lenses. This is going to take some serious planning, but I really like that top-most cowl as a fallback if my idea is total garbage.

While spandex is reasonable, I have the simple problem of being lanky. I'm 5'11", and 145lbs. So, i need something that's going to not look too rediculous. I'm worried about how silly I'd look in spandex, which I'm estimating to be somewhere near "a lot."

But these are all some really nice work. I'm really impressed by how well David managed to recreate the TV costume.

Gonna look into how dumb i look in spandex. back with more soon...

EDIT: looking into that "red zentai" thing, this may be a possibility. The metallic red full-suit has some potential, and it'll take a LOT of time out of development, and let me mess around with the cowl for ages...

IN-TAR-ESTING STUFF.

LOL...If I'm reading this right you've misread MY post above. :) My suit is a replica...I didnt make the movie ones. B)
...however, your post was flattering just the same....and I'm grateful for the kind words.... :)
If I misunderstood you then 'my' bad.....mine is just a replica, and a uber rush job at that. B)
I'd love to redo it properly at some point.

Hahaha. I know exactly what you mean, because I'm right about the same size. ;)

Here's me (along with the lovely Mrs. Phayze) in my GL costume from Halloween '06 - ignore the crappy gauntlets, please. ;)

This might be more of a deterrent than encouragement, but you might look something more or less like I do in spandex, which turned out to be not as bad as I expected, but not as good as I'd have liked. :unsure

I'm using this to work on my own lankiness problem in preparation for Halloween '07. :lol

Actually, good point. You're pretty decent there. I'd even go so far as pretty damn good.

I guess it wont be as horrible as I'm imagining it. And if I go with that red zentai dealy, I might be able to get a huge leap forward on this...

Either way, it's be better than the hotglue-nylon-and-gobstopper-box korben Dallas of '05.

Thanks. I'd stop at "pretty decent", but I appreciate the compliment, anyway. :D

The hardest part is overcoming the mental barrier that comes from years of people telling you that you're "too skinny". Once you realize that most of them are "too fat" it's a lot easier to just wear whatever you want forget about them.

Well, okay the hardest part was forgeting about my scrawny arms that I'm so self-conscious about, but the mental barrier thing was a big one too. :lol

Good luck with whatever you come up with, and don't forget to show us pics.

If I ever do a Flash costume- I'm contacting you Fettster- that's amazing. You gonna add the lightning bolts to the arms?

Honestly, to me a muscle bound Flash never made a lot of sense. If you have a super fast metabolism and your main "superpower" is running really fast, you should look somewhat thin. I build like your pic Phayze, would make a perfect Flash. Maybe going the "Spidey suit" route would be a good idea.

Yeah, I never got the either. Flash is basically the ultimate marathon runner, and most marathoners are sticks - reduces wind resistance. :lol

thanks, this pic is just a mock up, if i ever got it printed, i would make the symbol and lightning details out of rubber.

Great to see the Flash TV costume. Still my favorite comic costume done in the real word.
Getting my hands on a replica of that mask is high on my list.
I found a site that sells ones for $150 but I have not recieved a response for requests for better pictures to get a closer look. The smaller pics on the site make it look pretty good. :)
