The First Prop you ever made.

That takes me back 5 or 6 years, but the first prop I ever MADE was the Mobile Emitter.

I actually made 4 of them, getting better each time.
I actually found them in a box and here are the pics.

The first one was just two layers of 3mm styrene and painted "holes/vents" and a sticker on the front.

The second one was one layer of 3mm and three layers of 1mm styrene with the holes cut in.

The Third was made the same way the second was, but it had more rounded edges.

And the fourth was just a little better than the third , but they still had crappy circuit boards.

And then I found out about Federation Surplus (when they still existed) and BOUGHT my first replica (and modified it,:lol)

The first props I made were back when I was...I dunno, 8 or 9. One of the local stations played the original Star Trek episodes right around the time I'd get out of school. The show would end and me and a kid across the street would make what we saw. We made all sorts of stuff, but I really remember making a phaser.

Well, we didn't actually make them. We drew them out on a piece of wood and the kids Dad cut them out for us....and they weren't very accurate.

The one thing I made myself after joining this board that was molded and cast for profit was the Wendol earth mother idol from "The 13th Warrior".

But there have been few people interested in this. To date, I think I've sold 3.

My very first prop would have to be a ship I made when I first heard that the ILM guys used parts from model kits to build the ships in Star Wars. My brother & I had several unassembled kits that I scavenged parts from and built my version of the ANH X-Wing. This was around 78-79. No pics though. :unsure

My first prop I made was Griff's Bat from BTTF2. I was sitting around one night and got the idea for this. It was 11:30pm and so I drove down to our 24hr. Home Depot and got the PVC pipes. The next day I made it.

Well I made my first one of these back in '84 for Halloween. It consisted of two cardboard boxes glued together. I hid a school bag inside allowing the straps to feed through for wearing. The gun was a toy Uzi with a glow stick shoved in the barrel. I wish I had photos, I really really do.

However this was my first stab at prop building as an adult. Scratch built from styrene, no kit's here.

I built it about 4 years ago or so. I also made an ESB Luke saber around the same time.

I think my VERY first was the makeshift proton pack that I used in Pre-K (a backpack and a neutrona wand out of legos). That was only because I wasn't allowed to bring in my Kenner toy! Speaking of the toy, I remember using a black crayon to color the blue plastic black to make it more "accurate." SHEESH.

Does anyone else remember trying to navigate through a VHS for a glimpse of a prop? And trying to make out details from the wavy, static filled, paused screen? I literally wore my BTTF 3 tape out when I was ten years old when working on my "Doc letter!"

My first was a grail diary...a horrible one at that, too...it was WAY too thin...I used a parchment paper that I thought would look good...tried aging it with strong coffee...the text and images weren't all lined up very well...it was a mess...didn't even make it with leather...used the vinyl ripped off of a chair a neighbor had tossed on the side of the road for the garbage truck to pick up..looked "leather enough", as I thought. But it was enough to get me hooked....I've since made two more diaries, the 3rd being 'the charm", so to speak...paper properly aged with walnut ink...real leather cover aged to perfection (if I do say so myself)...lots of (but not all) the inserts...it was the one that made me say "that's it...I don't need to try again..this one is just right".
And I've made quite a few other props since then...the Hogwarts Express ticket, the Book of Mazarbul, the Holy Grail, had a few props in two different museum exhibits, and one about to be in a music video.

My first prop was a replica of the Smallville map to the stone of knowledge. I drew it back in 2005. 8 hours of drawing on paper then scanned into the computer, I made the kryptonian letters and the border of the map in the crappy Paint program that comes standard on the computer.

My first was an Evil Dead chainsaw back in 2002 and was based off the PS1 Evil Dead: Hail to the King video cut scene where Ash was told he had to retrieve an amulet to let this old lady out....who turns out to be a Spider Deadite. XD

The paint is all custom and hand aged to give it a nice worn and greasy/dirty look. Even put electronics and a speaker in it to make the chainsaw noises XD

Oh, dude, Not only do I remember doing just that, and burning out a couple of VHS machines in the process of rewinding and pausing over and over, but I also used to try and photograph the tv screen with my camera for reference.

I just found a thing i made over 14 years ago: The Jedi training remote.
It made enterly out of air drying clay. It hollow and i never finished it. but i still have a bag with some of the tiny parts i made for it

PeteVenkman, I like how that newer proton pack turned out. I'm hoping to start one sometime next year. It doesn't appear to be a cheap endeavor however. How much do you figure it cost you to make your new pack?

Well I only had the blueprints of "Fieldbook of Sci-Fi weaponary" back in the 80thies for reference - no internet LOL

These were my first props made out of wood :

When I was 11 or 12 years old I built a spaceship under the roof with a school-friend - you know some sort of spaceship cockpit with seats and some electronics (well bulbs I meant LOL).

An old VW Beetle speedometer driven with a little e-motor was high-end back in 1982 - I have some old prints from it and will post some scans later.

I know it`s no prop but I was really proud to have my own spacecraft at home

By far not the first one I've owned, but the first one I "built" was this custom lightsaber. At one point I was going to do some kind of Original Trilogy mercenary type Jedi costume. I never finished it. just the saber, which was a kit bash of left over parts and greeblies. OgibenDogy supervised and helped me with the belt.

the first prop I made was Jack's compass from PotC. I did not have much reference when I started it...
