The Fifth Element - Ruby Rhod's Mic

Some good ideas here. And I'd say it would be difficult to find, too. I still haven't found anything after the many Google searches.

Anyone willing to have an attempt at sculpting this awesome prop?

Does anyone know anybody that worked on the film?

That piece looks pretty complicated without the original drawings or at least close up photos it would be impossible to make, right?

Ruby Rhod was a secondary character at best, I can't imagine they would go to all the trouble of designing, prototyping, and sculpting a prop that intricate for a secondary character. It's got to be a found item.

Possibly.. Not a bad idea.

Best way to replicate the item is find a sculpting wizard!

Or have the original to cast it from. :rolleyes

Btw, talking about if its designed or not, they had many designers that worked on the film, and if I remember correctly they sat in an old factory and illustrated for almost 2 years....and remember that this movie was the most expensive movie of all times in 97, so I guess thay had $$ to do it!

The placement of the dragons heads and that they all appear to be attached to a bar or series of smaller bars makes me thing it's some sort of ornate wind instrument.

(snip)

Any one of these valves could have been wired to turn on the light, and additionally, the convenient hole in the end of a wind instrument would be perfect for mounting said light behind the ruby that makes up the end of the mic.

Well, as the resident music doctor, I can say with 98% certainty that there is no wind instrument there.

It WOULD be a cool instrument, but there is no current (or antique/ancient) that fits the configuration presented in Mr. Rhod's Mic.

I just acquired the Fifth Element VHS Collector's Edition that comes with a "behind-the-scenes" on a lot of things, such as the props, etc. Is this the famous T5E book that everyone talks about?

It should be here in a week or so. It may just have info on Ruby's mic.

I really don't think that's the book everyone talks about.

Wind instruments are not my forte, but those sure as hell look like valves to me.

I still think it looks like the bowl of one of those pewter fantasy chalices with some ornament stuck in the top. 2 cents

I believe "the book" you're referring to is, "The Story of the Fifth Element," by the director, Luc Besson. When you can find it, it typically runs somewhere around $240.

Did it come with the VHS collector's edition originally?

I'm of the school of thought that the mic is at least two pieces...separate found items.

Regarding the top bit, my first reaction was, "napkin ring." However, after looking at the end cap with the ruby/red colored lens in it, I'm more inclined to think it may be one of those little round jewelry boxes. The design of the "lid" looks similar to some I've seen on Gau boxes and the like. If it is a jewelry box, Tibetan for example, it probably had a piece of colored coral in the center that was removed and replaced with the ruby/red light. I couldn't find a match, but the pic below should give the idea of what I'm talking about:

For the lower section with the multiple dragons, I've looked through a number of lamps, fantasy type goblets and even opium pipes and have yet to find anything even close.

Thoughts?

Here's the box:

Here's the box open with the book, etc.

I thought it looked a little like the book on the Amazon page. The page that it's on in the second image looks like it's showing T5E posters from all over the world. Now, on the Amazon page a customer review says it has "Posters and release details," plus my book looks like a paperback, like the one on the Amazon page. Still, even if it isn't the book, I've wanted the VHS collector's edition for a long time, so either way it's a good score.

Whoa, I think you're on the right track there. I never even considered a lid like that, but now you've shown that image it looks like what they've used.

Just found a few pictures that confirm the VHS Collector's comes with the Story of The Fifth Element:
