The Fifth Element - Ruby Rhod's Mic

I never thought about replicating this piece before. Anyone know what it was made from, or was it made from scratch? Because I have no clue. I thought it'd be interesting to know, and I'm on a little bit of a Fifth Element prop craze at the moment.

Funny - I think about it every time I watch the movie.

I've always presumed it was a found-item modified somehow, perhaps even an antique. But that is pure speculation.

Does the "Making of..." book make any mention?

Good idea. Anyone with the book want to chime-in?

You need pics in this thread!

Here are a couple I found on the web, but better pics will help get a discussion going.

I've been trying to find caps for a while, thanks for those. I'll see if I can get some more tonight.

Also, is there two versions of the mic? In the opera house on Fhloston Paradise, Ruby has a different costume. I can't remember if he had his mic colour match his costume or not, like he did with his "Cheetah" costume in the shuttle halls.

Oooooooo, Now there's a 5th E prop that I've never seen done. :eek

Go for it! :thumbsup

Funny, I watched 5th Element last week and it occurred to me how hilarious it would be to go to a convention as Ruby Rhod, complete with his entourage of little yes queens, that would be tons o' fun.

Here's the best caps I could get (if anyone else can get better, please feel free to chime-in). It looks like it has an on/off switch for the red light, I just can't see where.

And it looks like he does change the 'stalk' of the mic in the Opera House scenes:

Are we talking about his headset mic or the "mic" on the end of the staff?

My reasoning for it being a found item is this:

I fully understand that there are hugely taleneted sculptors in the movie-making biz...

But looking at the ornate detail of the head piece, compared to it's role in the film (big, but not huge), I have a hard time thinking that they would custom sculpt such a piece for this prop.

Thoughts?

Very interesting prop!! Could it be the top of a cane or staff?

I am googling some stuff now.

edit: I am searching both dragons and serpent, walking stick, cane, and staff.

I would tend to agree with you because the whole look and feel of the item really doesn't specifically fit Ruby other than being usual.

The placement of the dragons heads and that they all appear to be attached to a bar or series of smaller bars makes me thing it's some sort of ornate wind instrument.

Wind instruments are not my forte, but those sure as hell look like valves to me.

Any one of these valves could have been wired to turn on the light, and additionally, the convenient hole in the end of a wind instrument would be perfect for mounting said light behind the ruby that makes up the end of the mic.

'not that I'd know, officer'...........but it could be off something to , er , smoke pot with, shall we say? Being near Camden market in London, it looks quite Ethnic/hippy like.

Nice work guys, the Mic tip looks like a found object added to a staff of some type. Could it be an ornate candlestick topper?

Possibly.. Not a bad idea.

Challenge here is that if it IS a found item, it may become VERY difficult to find it. Best way to replicate the item is find a sculpting wizard!
