The 2010 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest.

Shoot, I've been waiting for this for a while now...
Alright if I can get the $20 and the time (stupid college), I'm in :D.
Stupid college is exactly right. I'm in the same boat. but I'm in.. As long as exams and projects don't get too crazy.

i went and spent $12 of the $20 budget last night. we'll see how well i can get by on that. i'm sure there will be another trip involved.

Quick question: Finding an "everything maxes out at a dollar" store is very difficult anymore. I just wanted to check that a store like 5 Below (where everything is under $5) is off limits even if we ONLY buy items for $1 there.

If it is, it looks like I'm going to have to go dollar store hunting. haha

edit: just checked out a few local mom and pop operations and even they are locked into an "under 5" model. I guess nothing costs a dollar anymore around where I live. And I'm guessing there isn't any way to loosen the rules (maybe something more in line with the arc reactor rules for price) to accomodate situations like this, is there?

I'm really interested at taking a crack at this.... I was wondering, however if I could use anything from my Patented 'Box 'O Bits' (i.e. a collection of interesingly shaped objects, bottle tops pill bottles, lids, plastic packaging etc.)

Where can I see the final lightsabers? right here on rpf or on another site?

All the pictures will be posted by me (or the RPF STAFF) in December, after this part of the contest is complete, and we move to the voting portion starts. No-one can post their picture, here, or anywhere else, until after the voting period is over, or they will be disqualified.

I've been getting this question a lot via PM. Short answer. Sorry, but No, only dollar stores. (like Dollar Tree)

Long answer, The contest has started, and the rules are the rules, so I'm not going to change them mid stream. Even if it did just start a few days ago. However, since I have been getting this complaint a lot, I will take this into consideration for the next contest.

From my reading of the rules no. You can get all those items at a $1 store so essentially you would be cheating

Sorry, but no. Where you may have really cheep parts in your Box-O parts, someone else might have something really expensive, and cool in theirs. To keep things as even as possible, all structural parts of the saber need to come from the Dollar store. The only things you can use, that you already own, are things like Paint, epoxy, glue, and other finishing materials.

Alright, thanks. I'm going to have to back out of this then.

I got the woman who owns my local mom and pop dollar store to tell me where the nearest "real" dollar store is, and it turns out to be over 30 minutes away. That just isn't worth the drive to me.

I found some cool stuff for $1 at the mom and pop place, and when I explained the situation, the owner tried to tell me to do it anyway since nowhere on the receipt does it say "Also sells goods for over $1." As this competition will in turn reflect on the RPF as a whole, I think it's more important to have some honesty in the spirit of fair and open competition by not doing that.

Damn! And to think they had such a cool little doo-dad to make an emitter out of. :p

TheNickFox - you can always order from dollartree.com, shipping is not part of the $20 budget.

Hmmmm...Perhaps I am back in then. haha

Thanks for the link. I'll have a look around. But there's something to be said about being able to hold an object in your hands to be able to see what else it could become, so I don't know how well my mind will be able to work with just small thumbnails of items.

EDIT: It seems Dollar Tree's site only allows you to buy in bulk. Looks like I am still most likely out of the running for this then.

I have a question about this contest, and all RPF contests in general. When entries are posted, are usernames associated with them? If so, I fear this can sway the popular vote somewhat. Shouldn't the voting be based purely on the merits of the end result, and not the one achieving them?

Just my $.02...
