The 2010 "$1 Store" Lightsaber Contest

The RPF is pleased to announce one if its first sponsored contests in which we, as a site, support a contest which is run by a member! We hope to sponsor many more contests in the future and look forward to cool prizes and a lot of member participation!

For a little more info on our participation in member run contests, please see this thread.

!!!WELCOME ONE AND ALL, TO THE 2010 "$1 STORE" LIGHTSABER CONTEST!!!!

This is our 2nd annual $1 Store Contest and I am thrilled to announce that the RPF is sponsoring this year’s contest and helping with some of the logistics!

What is this contest?

It is a one (1) month long contest, running from November 1st, 2010, to December 1st. 2010, in which you must construct a lightsaber out of parts bought exclusively at a “dollar store", with a maximum budget of $20 per person.
If you would like to enter the contest, please read ALL the rules below! If you have any questions, please PM, or e-mail me, or post here.

Why do this?

Because it's cheap, fun, good practice, and............ oh yeah, you could win a prize!

What are the details (rules, etc) ?

1. This is a free contest with no entry fee.

2. You must be a member of the RPF to enter the contest. If you are reading this and are not yet a member, or if you have friends that want to enter, but are not yet members, you/they need to register and join the RPF, before the contest is over, to be eligible for the contest.

3. One (1) entree per person, please.

4. All parts must come from a "$1 store", or the international equivalent (see rule 10 for details on international entrees). This means $1 STORES, not "I got this really cool part on clearance at lowes, for a $1." kind of thing. We are talking about the stores where EVERY ITEM is $1. (in some areas these are called ".99$ stores", which works too.) Eligible stores include but aren’t limited to: "Dollar Tree", "Dollar Zone", or any of those small "Mom, and Pop" $1 stores. Sorry, but this does not include "Family Dollar", or "Dollar General’, because not everything in those stores are $1.

5. All items must be purchased, and lightsaber constructed, during November 2010. No receipts dated before November 1, 2010 will be accepted, nor will any lightsabers constructed before that date be accepted.

6. There is a maximum budget of $20 per person. This does not include tax, or shipping . "$20" means 20 items from the "$1 store".

7. If you can find a "$1 store" online, or a friend that will ship "$1 store" items to you, that's fine. (that's why it says shipping will be ignored in rule 6.) However, you will have to show some kind of proof of when you bought the item(s), and how much was spent. (just have your friend include the receipts, or keep a copy of the invoice from the online store.) If it is from a web site, it must be an online "$1 store". No ebay, or places like Wal*mart.com, lowes.com etc. etc. everything on the site must be $1. before tax and shipping.

8. The $20 budget applies only to the parts used for the body of the lightsaber. You may use your own Glue, Epoxy, paint, tools, fasteners, etc.. to assemble, and "finish" your lightsaber. However, you may not use any item not purchased from a "$1. store", as part of the structure of your lightsaber. (see rule 9)

9. If you wish to cast parts for your saber, you may, but all the casting material, and the item being cast, must come from a "$1 store". That means you would have to find items at a "$1 store", to make your mold, casting, and even the item being cast must either, be from a "$1 store", or made from parts from a "$1 store".

For example, you may, buy clay, wood, etc. from a "$1 store," sculpt a saber part, or the whole saber from those items, then use caulk, and other items found at a "$1 store" to make a mold, then use chocolate, epoxy, or something else from a "$1 store", to make the casting. You may want to do a search for "getto mold making" here on the boards.

You may not, use silicon, resin, epoxy, or any other materials that you already own, or get from a non "$1 store", to cast an item, and you may not use items you already own, or bought from a non "$1 store" as the item being cast.. IN OTHER WORDS , DON'T CAST A "MASTER REPLICAS" LIGHTSABER IN CHOCOLATE, OR ANY THING LIKE THAT.

10. International entrees are welcome. Please us the denomination of your currency, closest to 1 US dollar. (i.e. 1 Pound, 1 ERO, etc. etc.) and a max of 20 of said currency, before tax, or shipping. (i.e. 20 pounds, 20 ERO, etc. ) If you do your shopping online, please shop only at your countries equivalent to a "$1 store". ( i.e. 1 ERO store) If there is no such thing in your country, please do your best to conform to as many of the rules listed here, as possible, pertaining to budget, and of course all of the other rules listed here would still apply. (I am aware that most foreign curacy has different "Value". I know that a "Pound" has a different technical "Value" then a US "Dollar". Our goal here, is that you get 20 items, with each item being purchased with your countries denomination of currency closest to 1 US Dollar.)

11. For those who want to machine their lightsaber, you are welcome to do so, as long as what you machine your lightsaber from, comes from a "$1 store". For example, if you can find a way to lathe a broom handle into a lightsaber, then go right ahead.

12. You may create a replica lightsaber, or an original custom lightsaber from the "$1 store" parts. However, originality is encouraged, and as stated above, no castings of existing replicas are allowed. (MR, Parks, etc.)

13. The contest will run from November 1st. to December 1st beginning at 12:01 AM EST November 1st 2010, and ending 12:01 AM EST December 1st. This gives you the entire month of November to work on your lightsaber.

14. All entrees must include:

  • A scan of all receipts that pertain to the contest. If there are only a few items used for the contest, and the rest are for your own consumption, please circle, or underline, the items used for the lightsaber. (These images will, probably, not be posted, but are for verification that the items were bought during the contest, and that you did so within budget.)
  • A picture of the parts before construction. Preferably in package, but if you have to open them, to show what they are, that's fine. "These pictures will, probably, not be posted. They are just to prove that you did construct your saber from found items and before pictures will come in handy, it you post a build thread after the contest is over.)
  • At least 3 good picture of your finished lightsaber. 3 pictures are required, but if you would like to submit more, for me to choose the best 3 images from, that is fine. All pictures should be clear, sharp, and of the saber itself. There should be nothing in the pictures except for the saber. (no hands, gadgets, set dressing, etc.) No photoshoping, or other kinds of editing/photo manipulation is permitted. (We want this to be about the sabers, not your skills in photoshop)
15. You may submit your entree at any time during the month of November, by sending the required pictures (see rule 14) to me, either by PM, or by e-mail at jedimasterjpb7@aol.com Please title your message, or e-mail, "2010 Lightsaber Contest Entry", and if you’re e-mailing your entry, please include your RPF screen name, in the body of the e-mail. (Please keep in mind that I am on "dial-up", so if e-mailing your entry to me, please don't send excessively large files, or if you do have to send excessively large files, for some reason, please send your images in more than one e-mail.)

16. All pictures will be held until the contest entry period is over. (We don't want anyone taking your idea, and trying to improve on it, and stealing your thunder)

17. Pictures will be posted as soon as possible after the deadline of 12:01 AM EST December 1st. (hopefully within a day, or two.)

18. While it is encouraged that you post your intention to participate in this contest, in this thread, it is not required. In other words, if you prefer, you can PM, or e-mail me your entry without posting in this thread. Though at least a simple "I'm in", or "I'll take a crack at it" etc. would be welcomed.

19. I may post your screen name as a participant. This means, while you are welcome to not post your intended participation in the contest, in this thread, I may. (this clause is only for things like posting winners screen names, etc. )

20. Voting will run for one week after contest pictures are posted.

21. Voting will be open to all of the RPF, whether they made an entry, or not.

22. Once voting has ended the winners will be posted, and prizes selected.

23. The first place winner will have first choice of witch one (1) prizes they want. Then second place will choose one (1) prize from those remaining. Then 3rd place will chose one (1) prize, then 4th, and so on, until we run out of prizes.

24. You are prohibited from posting pictures of your saber, at any stage of its construction, in this thread, or any other, on the site, or any other site, until after the conclusion of both the entry, and voting periods of this contest. This is to keep your entry anonymous. You are, of course, welcome to post a build thread, AFTER THE CONTEST IS COMPLETED, and I truly hope that you do so.

25. You are prohibited, during the voting period, from posting in any thread, on any forum, what number your entry is. (This is, of course, to keep your entry anonymous, and to make sure that the voting is fair.)

PRIZES: Prizes will be posted here, throughout the run of the contest. Please check back often for updated the updated prize list.

Sorry for so many rules, but many of these rules answer question I've already been asked about the contest, and I remember these kinds of things asked in the last "$1 store" contest. Hopefully I've covered just about everything, but if not, let me know.

Thanks for taking the time to read all the rules, and ............ LET THE CONTEST BEGIN!!!

Cool idea. It is always interesting to see the creative skills of the members here. Looking forward to seeing the entries!

I'm in. Really wish I still had one i already did from a dollar store. It was a single handed Sidious style sith saber. I had it so nice, and not to give anyone ideas, it was a flashlight, so i kept the reflective section, and when it didn't have a blade in it, (Yes, it was a fully working stunt saber!) the reflective part fit back in nicely, and with a littel work made for a really cool looking emitter.

This sure does look interesting. And I might will do it though I am not too sure about if I actually will. I am also interested in seeing a few of you others and how your light sabers will look.

Though question I am wondering if or when we are buying these items. Would it count against us if we bought soda, candy, food and such to keep our bellies full and burners with some fuel to burn or will we have to make that on a separate purchase?
