TARDIS builds - let see 'em!

I have a bunch of projects on the go at the moment, but a long-time ambition of mine has been to build a full size TARDIS for the garden. This project idea has the full endorsement of my wife and kids, which is a real bonus!

I've gathered a bunch of reference pics from the net and from the various DW exhibitions in person, so I anticipate tackling this one quite soon.

I anticipate quite a straightforward build, but like most builds I reckon this one will be "bigger on the inside"...

Anyway, I'd love to see all the TARDIS builds from RPF members in one thread, with any tips, tricks and helpful build hints thrown in.

Also, what about the paper-prop element to the piece? Any accurate printable resource folks can share?

Cheers,

Al

PS - almost forgot to say, I'm going for the 10th Doctor version..

I'm building a Baker Tardis using plans and advice found at the TB site ratchetrex linked. Can't say enough how much good information is there for people who want to build one of these.

Mine is going to be a wet-bar cabinet so I'm planning on going on real adventues in time and space once it's completed.

I build the Police Public Call Box sign from the new series Tardis a couple years back. I made a file for the text that was way more accurate than anything I could find online. I'll post it once I figure out where I have it saved.

I found a picture of the finished sign.

I cut all of the letters out by hand on contact paper, then used them to mask some translucent white plastic which I spray panted. It turned out OK, but was the biggest pain in the butt of my life.

I know I still have the illustrator file somewhere, but it doesn't seem to be on my laptop or my server. I should be able to track it down once I get home.

Found it. Here are two illustrator files. One is just the outlines of the letters, the other is white letters on a black field. To give you an idea of what you will be getting, I have also included a shot comparing my file to the real deal. I would say with confidence that it is at least 90% accurate.

You'll need the font Gill Sans MT, because Illustrator is a jerk and won't embed it. I don't want to post it here because it isn't a free font, but you should be able to find a free download within 30 seconds of Googling.

If you need it in a different format, just tell me what you want, and I'll do my best to make it for you.

Here's a link to my blog detailing my, as yet, unfinished build.

I started back in October 2008 at my holiday home in Florida, but since I am based in the UK I can only work on it when I'm on vacation. I've not been over to FL since June last year, so I've no idea what state it is in at the moment, but I did wrap it up in tarpaulin to protect it from the elements as best I can.

I should have finished it last year, but the rain was rather intense on my last visit and I needed it bone dry to complete the work. I'm hoping to get over to FL again later this year to finish!

Regards,

Dave

When I get a bigger house....some day I'd like to build one of these and turn it into my computer desk. :D

A question for all you TARDIS builders:
Other than major geekery, what do you use your TARDISes for? Not being facetious, I'm genuinely interested what practical use people have gotten from them. E.g. I recall seeing someone's site where the TARDIS was covering the door to a room they'd built an interior set in.

Well so far mine has been taken to a convention for display but right now its really just taking up space in my basement/shop area until the next convention.

It's based on the 2005 version (fresh from the time war) and is to scale. There are a few inaccuracies that bother me like the edges on the door panels (that are supposed to be slightly beveled but mine aren't), the crooked door sign (I have a Russrep aluminum version on the way) and the top sign maker enlarged the "police box" lettering and it's too bold. But otherwise I'm very proud of it.
I really need to figure out a way to make the light on top flash.
