Talking Predators

hmm
i think like rock-tusk-pred
clicking sounds / signs r the best
also make .. if there angry or sumthing a HUGE roar or anything
if there stealthy
clicking in the best
coz
its not loud
but other preds still here it..

in AVP when the the humans take there weapons the cletic predator kinda roars.so you could use clicks and roars for language.and sign laguage.just an idea. :p

I agree that the pred language would be complex at times. My comparisons are based on our own language. Growls and roars are primal, very direct. Even a roar can have different meanings as in the big cats such as "don't piss me off", "you pissed me off", "stay away", "MINE", you get the idea. A low growl could mean anything from "Good job, I like what you did" to sexual interest. The enviroment of the situation can even change the meaning of an utterance or gesture. In the human language we will spontaniously utter words or phrases such as "damn", "****", "**** me/you", when in reality we have no intent to do what we say.

Body language / hand signals I would think would be universal. Sharks will arch their back, the hackles of a canine will raise up, ears lay back in both cats and dogs. Some animals, including humans, will cock their head as a response to curosity, puzzlement, indifference, amusement.

The clicks are another part of their language that can be used alone or in conjunction with growls, gurgles and body language. A morse code, if you will. In addition, the Chinese and Japanese written language consist of a large amount of characters, some of them represent an idea or concept as oposed to a word or letter. That makes for a complicated alphabet.

Most do not like my thought on the gutteral whale sounds language. Take note that when a predator first starts to mimic a human phrase, it is very gutteral giving a brief glimpse into its actual speaking voice. In nature, most animals, including man, make their sounds on the lower freqs because it is harder to determine the direction from which the sound comes from ( this has importance in both stealth and self protection ), where as higher pitched sounds are easier to trace to their source ( such as echo location, foghorns, a cry for help).

The more intelligent that a species becomes, the more complex, involved the language becomes. Where the language involved while in a stealthy hunt should be minial; educational, instructorial, and communial language is more involved and used to verbally communicate detailed concepts. EXAMPLE: just in this thread, if we were altogether in person at the same time, how would you translate everything typed into clicks and finger/hand gestures. Point is, an intelligent species has need for a method to explain an idea or method.

Guys, this has been interesting. I enjoied commenting on the subject. It has not been my intention to convert you to my way of thinking. If anything that I have said can be of any use, I am pleased. If not, oh well. Carry on guys

I am making a movie aswell. I don t give a rats ass and making a language while using some words from Steve Perry's predator language guide but other than that, I am gonna do what many of you suggested. Such as associating mandible clacking, hand sigsn during stealth, and growls. But I wanna maintain a language then creating an odd burping like language. If a fan flim is made with JUST predators, maybe having them speak english is alright.
I mean, the elite in HALO speak english and I doubt they speak that normally. Just an idea (but I aint gonna do it though :p

Thanks for all your input guys its been very helpfull im still not 100% sure what we are going to do but i think once we get the suits made we will have to do a couple of very short films with predators speaking, using sign language and a few other ideas

Thanks again

I wish you both the best of luck. I'm sure that your decisions will be perfect for your projects. Have fun!

id say go for a mix of clicks, growls and sign language.
the sign language would work when they're cloaked because they can see eachother when their prey cant.

although ive always thought that the preds would use the technology in their biomasks to communicate during a hunt
like how the wolf puts on the other preds bio mask and sees what he saw before he died.
the wolf also got the same transmission on the homeworld across lightyears of space so i assume it can be sent from mask to mask?
so if a pred wanted to know where some prey was at or where his buddy was he could use that transmission tool possibly?
they also have the hologram thing that celtic used in AVP in their gauntlets which they can use to locate things.

also its pretty obvious that the preds have a language since they have written symbols and numbers
but since both of these methods would be incredibly difficult to create
the clicks and sign language would probably be best
the armed forces, hunters and human tribes in africa for example use hand gestures when they hunt.
i think the primal effect that it gives would add to the preds hunter reputation.
even the creators of the preds said that they wanted to give a really primal feel to the preds even though they were an incredibly advanced species.

i hope this helps
good luck with it anyway

He UltimateHunter; Conner,

It would be OK if you use English, but I'm sure that it will be even more impressive if they start in the predator language and zoom in (not in focus). Zoom out (focus) and they speak english. The same was used in red october when the russian army was talking their native language, and they changed it in English.

That would be a good idea, but the problem is, you need to do it at the right time and place in order to pull it off properly. If done.... wrong, it can create a big mess of things. Anyway, that would be a swell idea but if you can pull it off afficiently, then okay
good luck

just a thought wouldnt they have comuicators in the bio seeing as they have camaras/recorders in the bio(begining of AVP-R)

After some serious thinking and talking we have decided to go for the hand signals and clicks as we will only see one predator face twice and neither of those shots will be longer than a minute and one time the predator is unconscious but for the gorup of three preds hand signals would work

thanks or all your input its been great reading your ideas and opinions

Hey. Looks like this thread has reached a natural end but thought i'd just add something. I'm making a fanfilm in the uk right now and theres a scene at the end with the 'Hero' Pred meeting up with three others. We have an Elder who is clearly in charge by the physical attitudes of the others. Moving aside, bowed heads etc. I went through a similar process of 'what will/wont work' and decided not to go with a spoken language as we haven't seen that in the Fox movies. We HAVE seen deference to a leader (P2/AVP [Am i right that in the extended cut Celtic is more or less leading the other two when they find the empty weapon thing?]) and we have seen that there is an unspoken understanding of what is required of each member of a team. A couple of other people referenced military hand signals and even Dutch in Predator which is pretty much what i decided to go with, along with this unspoken 'tilt of the head' way we've seen them communicate before. I agree there is very probably a comm device in the Bio for long range contact, but they are ultimately a tribal culture so would more likely adopt a physical language when out in the field. Some of the nicest moments in the films are when a Bio wearing Pred is merely staring or reacting to a situation with subtle movements (Wolf/Scar/P1 by the Waterfall.) It keeps the suspense when you don't really know what they're about. Their motives are still a mystery if you go by the Lore laid down in each successive film. Why would Wolf skin the cop yet let the Mum and kid go at the graveyard when they're aware of him now too. Why does Scar kill the guy who falls down the ice tunnel? They're still a figure of horror, though with each new incarnation their society is expanded which is why we love them!
Probably not much help really was i?
