SW ANH TIE fighter -IS IT AUTHENTIC?

If it is authentic and if it truly does come from the collection of Richard Edlund, then it should put to rest the silly debate that Episode IV TIEs were painted blue-gray and not gray.

The blue screen shot, which looks authentic to me, shows how the blue values in the paint job can be lost which leaves the gray tones. And the wing damage in the close-up pix of the model seem to match what's seen in the blue screen pic.

I'm no expert either, but it seems authentic to me.

Why wouldn't it be? Edlund has also put up his X-wing master for sale, and both were listed in the PIH catalogue...

If it's a fake, it's unbelievably good;very close in a lot of tricky detail places, like the damaged portion. But there does seem to be a significant mismatch in the highlighted area; which begs the question: if the artist is good enough to have replicated the damage so well, how could the support details be so different? I've done a whole suite of photo enhancement tricks to see if those details are on the bluescreen shot, and I can't find any trace of them whatsoever. Plus, the paint job... However, all the panel lines appear dead on. So I'm not sure where that leaves things.

Maybe they just changed the wings like they did so many times with the TIE Fighter (and Interceptor, mixing both some times). Maybe the wing is mounted upside down ?

Anyway it looks authentic to me ! Does Edlund need some cash lol ?

I´m not a SS expert but I noticed something in Mike´s comparison pic: notice the slight "waves" in the upper middle coolshade triangle on the starboard wing. I don´t think whoever would try to replicate this TIE would be able to exactly match those irregularities in the same place.
Also the distortions in the coolshade around the damage match exactly.
If it is the original it must have been slightly modified, as Julien says, maybe the wing was rotated, but also the broken wingstar strut has a much sharper bend in the bluescreen pic. Maybe they bent it back a bit?

Yes I noticed that also, but the lightning is a bit different so it could be a tricky effect !

Maybe they never built this model as "a damaged TIE Fighter" but just the damaged wing (like they did with the X-1). Maybe it was mounted on another TIE Fighter during filming ?

Anyway as stated by Dan, the waves on the koolshade would be impossible to replicate exactly...

Left wing definitely looks legit to me. I'd say the left wing is authentic which probably makes the right wing authentic as well. Most likely a switcheroo during filming.

I agree with Julien about the intact wing being upside down. It looks like if you were to rotate it 180 degrees, everything would line up.

I thought it was authentic when I saw the post- but was suprised this item was being offered- I did not know some of the original SW ANH filming miniatures wound up in the hands of some of the FX crew after production. I do remember the story of a break-in and some of the FX models being stolen from the original ILM in Van Nuys before SW ANH was released..

Julien, Beaz, I concur - the wing is upside down. The details on the rear/upper and front/lower spar match if you rotate the wing.

The provenance alone is enough for me, but alas, I don't have a spare $170K! :lol

Some models were also reportedly given away to studio executives and various people. And Edlund was one of the senior guys.

It's remarkable as much was kept as, er, was kept, really. Most movie models get binned or burned.

Yeah true Martyn, didnt "Laddie" get a Y wing on the completion of ANH?

lee

So the story goes, Lee!

Which if true means it's potentially a Y we've never really seen in decent pics, with its own quirks and details. Wanna see! Wanna seeeeeeeeeeee-eeeee! <end whine>

LOL indeed Martyn, would be nice to see it someday, but i wont hold my breath!
Anyhoo, on the subject of the TIE, im going with full on authentic, its even got the full monty ILM armature in there...its the real deal alright!

Anyone willing to loan me a few quid? :lol

Exactly what I also observed, the waving on the coolshade are a perfect Match, I really think it's authentic. Nice piece of SW history!!!

Is that guy "high" expecting to get $170,000 for a film prop?Even if it was the real deal(which I don't believe it is).If it were the real thing...maybe $50,000 wouldn't be out of the question, but $170,000.Maybe he's a crack head like Cory Haim used to be when he tried selling one of his rotten "meth tooths" on E-Bay for $50,000?
