While I am not recovering, I have been considering the issue of the back of the meter and the headphone jacks.

In some version(s) of the meter, a double headphone jack is clearly visible.

But in this version, from season 6, episode 14, there are no jacks there.

I would like to put in the jack as I think it would be cool to have it and I have engineered a method to make it work. The question is whether it is accurate. Does the prop department have multiple EMF detectors? It seems likely. Do Sam and Dean (the characters) each have one or do they share one? Does one have the jacks and the other one(s) does not?

never seen 2 EMF's at the same time on the show. I believe the boys just have one, BUT....I think it's just a tweek they did on the show. Nothing more, kind of like the car...there are several different things on the car that are not consistant, so I think whichever you want to do, you're golden.

Agreed. I've only seen them have one, besides when the boys have split up Dean made one out of a walkman that was different than their normal one.

I'd say they are both accurate, since as much as they get kicked around they would have had to make a few along the way anyways. Plus the prop department probably couldn't find all the exact parts to make them all 100% the same again

I think it looks better with the jacks, but really it comes down to how ambitious you feel I guess. I'd consider both accurate since it appears both ways in the show.

I am sure there was a recent episode where there were two of these EMF's together on screen at once. I remember thinking - Wow! Two at once! I can't remember if it was season 7 or 8. I can check my copy of season 7, but it may have ben 8.

I think it was the episode when Bobby was dying. He was wandering around in his head with Rufus and I think they both had one of these EMF's in the same scene together.

This is not the episode I am thinking of (which has two people holding EMF's at the same time in the same scene) but we do see a 2nd EMF using the same meter but a different longer circuit board. This EMF is Garth's in this episode.

Some other differences, white P-Clips, no back with belt loop, and some blocky thing at the bottom on the back.

It must have been a season 8 episode; I watched all of season 7 (on FF) and only saw the 2nd EMF in episode 18. I bet they just used the Garth-o-meter as the 2nd EMF in the season 8 episode that I am remembering.

You found it! I must have FF'd too fast over that episode! It was a cut scene so they both apear to be holding an EMF with a belt-clip-back (both without headphone jacks like you noted) but it cannot be confirmed that there are two like that because of the cut I suppose.

Sam pulls out an EMF with no headphone jacks, turns it on with red lights. Camera cuts to Dean as Sam walks by, EMF briefly seen in-hand at the corner of the shot. Same shot; Dean turns his EMF on, says something smarmy, and the scene fades out. So there are two EMF's in that one shot, at least one of them the one without headphone jacks (in Sam's hand before the cut, in Dean's hand after). Maybe the other one is the longer Garth-o-meter which will be used more clearly in episode 18?

Hey guys, thanks for the great research. I checked over the two episodes and there are definite answers to my two questions. In episode 14 of season 7, Sam and Dean are both shown with EMFs in the same scene. Sam takes his out (no headphone jack), then Dean pulls his out (also no jacks).

But later in the season, in episode 18 of season 7, Dean is very clearly seen using an EMF with the two jacks at the top.

And here Garth is holding Dean's. He clearly said he borrowed it from Dean.

So as of Season 7, there were at least three EMFs used on the show by Sam and Dean, two without jacks as seen in the same scene (the only time that happens I think) and a snazzy one with the jacks that is identified by Garth as "Dean's" and we clearly see Dean using it in episode 18.

I think that I will include the headphone jacks in my EMF as I like the look of it with them and they are "screen accurate", at least in season 7. Also, since it is identified as Dean's and my daughter (who it is for) is a big Dean fan, I'm going to build them in.

I think "blocky thing at the bottom on the back of Dean's EMF (Garth's thumb is on it in the photo)" is a 9V battery. I think that because I am trying to fit a power supply in my meter and that is the only place that a battery fits. I think it is black because it is heat-shrinked. Now, where to find a belt clip back thingy...
