Superman Return chest emblem?

Just wanted to check and see what the state of the union was on SR chest emblems? I know that Bronze Armory has one that they offer on ebay, but despite their claims of it being cast from a screen used piece, it leaves a bit to be desired.

Does anyone know of a source for castings of a studio made one? An original for sale? A good source for a repro, or something like that???

If anyone has information and would prefer to contact me privately, please shoot me a PM. I'd love to hear from you.

BA's is supposed to be off a screen used, but I agree on it looking weird. I think it's the fact it is WAY too shiny. The size looks right though.

I did see another on ebay, it's not a studio version by any means, but it is to scale. It isn't 3d and it looks like it is made of leather. It's kinda cool but honestly, for 20$ you can't really complain much about the piece. As long as it shows up to your door not folded, it should be find ;)

Comtumebay's symbol is TINY. Great symbol and great look, just way too small.

There is also the water gun symbol. near the right size, 3d without those littles S's, and an easy casting to make.

Honestly the best bet on this question is to hit the LOH and see if someone has one or info about one.

LOH has less information than me, which is a bummer. Looks like I'll just have to keep trolling. I know of at least one "made for production" emblem that made it out into circulation, but the trail went cold after that.

Everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) on ebay is bunk. The BA one is not cast off an original, though they may have been lead to beleive that. (being generous here, mind you)

If anything else comes up, please keep me posted.

having nearly spent $350 on (an original chest symbol signed by brandon routh). Matt gave me the heads up that it looked like the ba one which i thought it would as they both came out the same mold if ba's was cast off an original, but after digging though all the ref material i could find, there seems to be a few things off with the ba one so im gonna have a crack at this one myself.

If i do any good, ill let you know Matt.

Fettster, i'm kicking around the same idea. I think the way to go, if one had the resources, would be this. First, pick up that one squirt gun thing with the big s-shield on it. Flatten it out, mold it, and cast it in resin. Then take it to a laser cutter and have them cut in all the little S's. there's enough reference out there to be able to nail the pattern and the shape of the little guys, but I don't know if the laser cutter would need to track the contours of the big S in order to make the cuts. Who knows.

I suppose even better would be to 3d model the big s, then just have the whole thing CNCd. I think i recall that one of the designers of the S logo is/was a member of this forum? I recall he posted a 2d rendering of the logo very early on in the production of the movie. If he's still around and was interested in helping, that would rock.

i have made the sheild template.

i was thinking about getting one of those squirt guns but the logo isnt accurate, its too baubus.(fat).

I found a photo taken from the actual symbol looking straight on, the resolution isnt great but it clearly shows the shape, i then blew it up to what looks the right size, printed it and used it as a template to cut it out of sintra.

Im now using bondo to shape the contours of the S, once im happy with the smooth shield, ill make a mold ,pour in clay and use a stamp to make all the little S's then remold.

sounds easy,errr?.

ill let you know how it goes but so far its looking pretty good, should be able to nail down the smooth shield anyway.

I wish you guys good luck because I would love one of these next to the Return Crystals.

Exactly the same reason I bookmarked this thread ;)

I took a closer look at all of the reference material I have on the S shield, and realized that my above described scheme would not have worked. I noticed that the small S's are of uniform depth across the entire shield, and they don't go that deep at all.

So the laser cutting would not work.

it would be my guess that the entire thing was 3d modelled, and then CNC cut with a superfine bit. Then again, what the hell do I know.

The stamping of the Small S's will be a real challenge, if you're going for uniformity of placement and depth. Please keep us posted with your progress.

In other news, I ordered one of the S symbols from Xaviers School on ebay. It came pretty quickly, and it's beautiful. It is of course, a tad small, but it's a VERY well made piece. My guess is that it's part of some larger product, like a back pack or something. just a logo that was removed from something else. I still cannot believe that no product has come out with a full sized S symbol on it. Oh well.

however, I've recently learned of a technique that might allow me to "upsize" this smaller symbol into something more accurate. Theres a few barriers, but I'll give it a shot. I think it's worth pursuing, as it's the nicest off the shelf S I have ever seen. I'll post pics soon.

Ok, here are some pics to chew on...

First up is a pic of the real Superman Symbol, posted by an RPF member a few months back:

Here is a shot of the emblem I just got from Xaviers:

Here's a close up of the Xaviers piece, showing the concentration of the small S's:

And for comparison, here is a pic of the bronze Armory S:

The Xaviers piece is wrong in a lot of ways. Don't get me wrong. It's got that weird border, and it lacks the overall contours that are seen on the screen used one. However, it does a really good job of the overall S shape (from a 2d perspective) and manages the small S's quite well, both in terms of size, pattern, and concentration. Still, It aint perfect. That's for sure. I'm very on the fence about this.

The colors are totally wrong too. Hey pick up that Making of Superman Returns book, there are some fantastic photos of the emblem in there.

I second that, and if you need any more of those high-res photos of the chest emblem, I saved them all to my computer.

i heard that the real one was made in rhino ( a 3d Computer Program)

Does anyone know the dimensions of the real symbol. I think mine might be a little too small, it measures 10 inches across.

No one has mentioned this and it may be totally off-base but I was in Wal-Mart the other day and they have a chest emblem as a sort of strap-on child's costume piece. Probably smaller than you want, but still fairly large, appears to be the right shape and color, and is covered overall with the tiny Ss.

Ok, this was the site of the guy who did the 3D logo for the movie...
http://www.mikeverta.com/
I've contacted him for the 3D model, but it's copyrighted by the Warner Bros. so he can give it away... Sorry :(
Well, at least I've tried... :)
