Your questions will be answerd once the website is up.
What is important is that the members who got the costumes need to have a high standard on their costumes. We will make it in different standards.

  • Super Heros.
  • Heros.
We will get back to the requirements of each group.
This will be evaluated with several people before we set the standards.

What!! No sidekicks :lol

...What is important is that the members who got the costumes need to have a high standard on their costumes...
I think that will be difficult, it works in the 501st (for the most part) because these are real things on screen that you can use as the standard. Unless you limit the costumes to movie or film seen items you are judging costumes off artwork (which actually changes depending on the artist.) You could have a comic accurate costume based on a particular artist that looks different from the same one from a different artist picture of that character.
Not that it is impossible but it really is going to be a personal judgment on whomever makes the call. Good luck either way, I am anxious to see if it works out.:thumbsup

Everything can work out if you intend to make it work.
It will be a panel to judge them for approval.

One standard will be movie standard.
Other standard will be Comicbook style.

Its always tough when you have standards. Back in '95 I started a Klingon Group. My goal was to have every member be 'screen accurate'. We were a small dedicated group and we ended up doing a lot of stuff with UPN. We had a standard and it was a very high one. We looked like we came off the screen and one rule was 'no glasses' at appearances (I myself wear glasses but klingons in glasses has always been a major pet peeve). I was called an elitist etc but I pointed out to folks that a high standard of costuming and authenticity was my groups particular goal. For those who didnt share that goal there were other groups. We also had folks that would try to join and get 'help' making their costume. Read this as they didnt have $$$ and wanted someone to do it for them. It was a pain but 14 years later the club still exists. There is nothing wrong with establishing a standard but realize that there will be folks who will try and pee in your pool for having a standard they may not be able to meet.

'Standards' let me know what rules I'm breaking. ;)

Seriously though, I think it's good that some groups have high standards. I'm working on a costume at the moment, I'm planning on doing a bit of a custom job, but it would be good to know what to aim for, even if I have no intension of matching it.

Also with a lot of the uniform costumes, you can make a much greater impact if everyone looks identical.

They may get accused of being elitist or taking it too seriously, but we don't have to join them. The only problem I have is when they derogate other peoples efforts. Unless you have some kind of official link with the company that owns the character or the people who made the original costume, I think that can seem a bit rich.

Well said.

It's is true what has been said about comic book versions of characters, plus no two artists draw them quite the same, so it must be difficult to create a definitive standard?

I'm helping with a Judge Dredd costume at the moment and he varies enormously from artist to artist.

That Superman is seriously shiny:eek and does not look like any screen or comic Superman to me. Which just lends itself to my point, that it is going to be hard to place a quality judgment on an item that does not appear in real life. Or even to place real world restrictions on screen accurate items (Iron Man is a great example - no real suit is screen accurate to a high standard because they are not functional in the real work, all have a visible under suit, real-word joints and are bulky. Sure they look great for a fan made costume, but they are not screen accurate we accept that based on the limitations of ability, so where is that line for other films.
I think it is a great idea to have a panel do it, it just seems like a difficult task to draw that arbitrary line.
I feel like that is negative sounding but it is not. I think the panel of judges can do it, it is just going to take some good people to be fair, honest, and realistic with their egos checked at the door. Not something I see in the fan community every day.
I still think it is a great idea, and hope it turns out well.

I'm Sorry but to me is sounds like your saying "It will be up to me and a panel of my friends who is worthy enough to have the honor of joining our group". And it seems if this is the case your missing the point of forums like this.

I think that's the point. He doesn't want it to be like the existing forums.

Interested to see what comes out of this.

Love these discussions. I have been costuming for a long time. I consider my standards high. Yet, it always will boil down to an opinion. What one sees as perfection another sees as not so. I recently did a 300 costume. I used various people and some commercial made pieces to bring together what I consider a top noch quality costume that brings alive the 300 movie and novel in combination. Most thought it was amazing, but there are a few who said I missed the mark since my gauntlets were an inch to short and the hair was wrong! Again feedback is one thing, but it is alwasy an opinion.

I would like to see a board that finally takes away the off topic stuff that I have found annoying and prejudice. I go to my boards to discuss a specific topic...costuming and proping. Discussions of religion, politics and other subjects along with prejudice remarks have caused me to leave other boards. How about a board that is just a costuming and prop board that really does limit those things for real and sticks to a standard of..."this is about costuming, nothing else"

Just my two cents!

The website is in full production.
I am trying to find a good name for the group.
It must be something for the people worldwide. SIMPLE AND EASY!

please Pm with proposal.

It will have a forum, news section, member section divided in groups / continents. Picture gallery for events and so on.

So few heros, for so many people. United we stand for peace and good.

I too am wondering about standards and what that means. But if by standards you mean leaving out religion and politics, then that's not a bad idea.

To make just a prop/costuming board only, that will get old fast. Great forums like Club Obiwan started out just as a gear board and eventually grew to cover other topics, cause gear all the time can get old.

May I recommend adding a fitness angle on there? Over at 300DC we strive to be in the best shape of our lives by taking on intensive programs and encouraging each other. Costuming is also a priority and we set the bar high for ourselves because a Spartan just has to have a six pack, ya know? Having a movie quality costume is desirable and looking good in it is icing on the cake.

I'd love to be a part of this new forum and contribute, if I can to the fitness aspect as I've been involved with fitness and nutrition for twenty years. I've always loved super heroes, and I can appreciate what top quality is all about. For most of us, it is something that takes months, if not years, but the journey is what makes it fun for me.

I'll think about some ideas for a forum name. I'm only curious about the many parameters. What genre of heroes? DC? Marvel? Others like Image (Spawn, Witchblade)? Will there be room for villains? It would make a great balance for those who like baddies and would also add extra spice for pictures at conventions like Dragon Con. Anyway, just some of my thoughts.

Thanks for asking all these questions.
Physical fit, will of cource be of importance if you plan to wear a spandex suit or be superman or Batman and so on. The proportions will have something to say. You dont need to have muscels if you have a muscle suit bellow the spandex. But of course beeing overweight will be problematic to solve with a suit.

The aspect of a High Quality Superhero forum will require the costume there to have an high standard to begin with. Like i said previoualy we will have a Movie quality and a comic quality.
Last one is more dificult to decide, but like in any costume contest we all know based on the looks, quality and physic of the wearer they are beeing evaluated.

  • 1. Visually aspect
  • 2. Proportions of the wearer, wearing the costume
  • 3. Quality of the costume, choice of materials and how the costume is executed.
We all know how A superhero carracter is looking like, or how we imagine them from comic book to real life. This counts for this as well.

The board will be of DC and Marvel.
We plan to bring the standards to a higher level of visuallisation, belivable carracters and combining those two better preformances.
The goal is to be the best elite costume board with high quality costume standard.

If people can tell a Rubies Dart Vader or a Stromtrooper from eachother, then i think its most fair to give the trust in people can se different in costumes. Saying differently is not logic.

I dont want other people to think we are looking down on others.
I dont want to se peole complaining about our ideas of this forum. Its a reason why people are on this board already. And we all know why. We want the best, most accurate replicas and show our custom creations to the public. This forum is not for paper mache armor, This forum already set the standards and i think its good.

We are making a forum with new , high and restrict standards and we hope people regardless of likeing it or not accept it for that reason.

People improve their Vaders, Batman, Predators, Spiderman, C3PO , R2D2, lightsabers and their generall collection. This is no different.

Now we plan to make a forum like this for an Elite standard of superhero costumes to get together, get insperation from eachother, meet and do active charity work where we are wanted.

Villians... Yes... That will be included as well. Already thought of that. ;)
:thumbsup

Religion and politics will not be allowed in the forum.

I think it's also important in the words we use like "crappy." Other forums have costumers who try their best with limited materials. It is possible to set high standards without being insulting to others who do it just for the enjoyment. Just my two cents.

This is a good idea but would also be hard for some I lose weight easy! I am not joking My goal is to be 160 at 5'10 (spider man size) right now I am 5'10 148 it has been hell keeping this weight up. Working out and protein shakes everyday is the only reason i am not at 120.:wacko So at my height and weight I am limited to smaller characters like Spider man, Rochester ect... I don't make any bold leap to a character like Captain America lets say.
