Studio Scale TOS Enterprise(11.25 feet)

Can't wait for updates. GREAT WORK! The Link posted before By CaptMac is FANTASTIC for Enterprise history buffs, Thanks for posting.

I was going to build myself a studio scale B/D deck and bridge, util I figured out that it would be 18 inches long!

Well there seems to be a lot of tumbleweeds here of late and I hope that this project is continuing. The fact that your are constructing the BIG E in it's original size is impressive to say the least, and I also think "unprecedented" especially at this level of ability.

Don't worry Spockboy, it's continuing.

I've been prototyping the armature.

I made this out of 1/4" MDF. I did it to experiment with the design. The final will be in aluminum, this is a far less costly way to figure things out.

This is what I'm thinking of doing in the warp nacelle.

These are not finished, I still have a lot to do. Remember these are for prototyping only, the final model will have an aluminum armature.
If you look in the background you'll see the Big E's parts everywhere.
I'm fixing those parts so I can wet sand them. Particle board and MDF doesn't do well when soaked with water. Then it's back to paint fill and sand.

I've been working on other stuff as well, my little E(66") has been taking a lot of time and frustration. I'm doing stuff to it that will make it a very interesting model.
Plus I'm prepping a blog for these builds for better exposure. I'll post that when I'm ready, besides most of what I'm putting on it right now you guys have seen. It does need to catch up to this thread. :lol

When you say that you're doing "interesting things" with your 66 inch version, will there be little translucent slides of pictures of rooms behind the portholes?
I always wanted to do that with a 66 incher.
I think the original Voyager model had that feature.

:)

Nope I'm doing anything like that, those windows are a real annoyance.

I've never been very impressed with a model that sits on a shelf(even with lights). I prefer to make models that do more than sit on a shelf. There is lots of ways to present these things to make them do much more.

Or as they say in the entertainment industry, "plus the show".

I have been following this thread for some time now. And even though I am throughly enjoying each and every update. I do have one thing I am having a problem with understanding. Just where you would display such a large model? Theme restaurant, bar, up high on a flag pole in the back yard?

I would do the same, if I did not value my two little hairy best friends so much. Wifes can sometimes put some real fear into interior decor :lol

Living room!! lol
That's were they are going. Along with the rest of the collection.

If you guys haven't noticed I plan everything. I know where they are going and how each ship will be displayed. I do that before I start construction on such a project. You have to, if you just start a project without considering what impact it will have on an environment. The results could be very departmental to life, limb, and your wallet, much less to the model itself. I know of many big projects that have been built only to find an exterior wall has to be removed. Or far worse a model has to be destroyed.

So planning is very crucial to any such endeavor. I'll be addressing the issue in my blog. Which I will be putting up later in the week. I'll post the links when it's ready.

Very nice. I was pretty disappointed with the paint job of the original Big E myself. I am looking forward to seeing more of this project unfold.

Now this beauty would look great in anyone's man cave!!, What would the neighbors think? who wouldn't want one of these..:) Just fantastic!!
