studio-scale ..Enterprise - C *** 5th update page 3 ***

Re: studio-scale ..Enterprise - C *** 3rd update page 2 ***

Thank you MooCricket...

Here goes, just before the weekend....

4th update.....

I made the wing from 3mm thick styrene, and already engraved the positioning outlines for the detailing to go onto the wings. As i want to cast the upper and lower wing as seperate pieces, i'm also modelling them as such.

The top wing is hanging from the sec. hull. The lower wing has the renshape/chemiwood corners added..

I want to cast up both in epoxy fibreglass, to make them lightweight and hollow, to allow for the armature to go up the wing as well. The armature will support the nacelle directly, so there's no stress on the epoxy.

I compared the setup in the last pic below, with all available pics of the studio-model. And it did give me the feeling both the shape of the sec hull (including the neck), and a small section of the wing need to be reshaped.

Gary Kerr is working on that exact info right now. He even consulted with Rick Sternbach on the matter. For those that don't know, mr. Sternbach designed the C.

More tomorrow

Cheers,

Wasili

Forgive me if this has been asked before.... What was Ertl Enterprise C model kit based on? The original C or the episodic refurbs?

Will enjoy watching your progress too...................

Hi,

To be really honest, i have no idea. I've never had the AMT/ERTL kit in hand, nor bothered to look for pics of the kit, knowing it was not what i was out to replicate anyway.

Sorry i can't be of any help.

Cheers,

Your using the same drawings the AMT kit was based on.

Hello Atemylunch,

I think you didn't read my first post in this thread. My drawings are a little bit more recent than what the AMT kit apparently was based on.

So i'm sorry, but no, i'm not using the same drawings. Completely new sec. hull, new nacelles, etc. Call them the Kerr 3.0 drawings, compared to a 1.0 for the calendar blueprints.

I'll ask Gary what he can tell about the AMT kit.

Atemylunch,

Thank you for mentioning the kit. You got me really curious, so just now i went looking for it, and came across some buildups at Starship Modeler, including some nice work-in-progress shots going all the way back to '99.

Regarding accuracy of the AMT kit, you're right in that it shows the very early blueprints. The shape of the sec. hull is definitely the one shown in the calendar shots, and that is now considered to be incorrect. It's off quite a bit. Please note that the early blueprints were drawn based on info present at the time.

Besides that, some of the shots of the kit-in-the-works really make me want to build the C even more.

Thanx.

Cheers,

Wasili

SWEET! Color me interested! Would you consider this to be roughly 1/350th at 41.5" ? Might look pretty badass next to a 1/350th PL Refit.

Re: studio-scale ..Enterprise - C *** 4th update page 3 ***

If you kit this, and i got one, i'd do the 2nd version of the pylons and build it up as the uss excalibur. Amazing build so far!

Re: studio-scale ..Enterprise - C *** 4th update page 3 ***

Thanx for the kind words guys. I think the C is supposed to be 1570 feet/478.5 meters, making 41,5" roughly 1/456.

Small update today. No. 5.....

Redid the nacelle "shoe" (on the left of the pic). This is placed on the bottom of the nacelle, right on top of the wingstrut. I added the slot, for positioning of the wingstrut. Pics posted before of the lower wing show a rectangular piece of styrene at the top of the wing, which fits into the shoe.

Other parts are the sensor dome, and the main deflector. The main deflector still needs some evergreen strips (on the left, ready to be cut).

More next week.

Cheers,

Wasili

Your welcome, I would recommend picking one up. It's a simple kit, but it can give you a different perspective than the drawings. The AMT guys were off a lot with their models but every now and then they would produce a kit with reasonable accuracy. If memory serves the C is one them(But then it's not that complex a design). You'll be having a lot of fun with that grid(that's one of the things I don't like about the AMT kit).

What machine are you using to mill the renshape?

Loooking very yery good.

Will you have some of you work on display on the IPMS national show next weekend ?

Cheers Scaramanga.

Re: studio-scale ..Enterprise - C *** 4th update page 3 ***

This is looking like an awesome kit.

If you're looking for something to enhance its display, I'm working up an MSD (Master Systems Display) for the Ambassador class. If you want a copy to print out and build into a display, let me know and I'll edit it to fit the Enterprise C.

Heres a WIP:

I'll be watching this with interest since the C is my favourite Enterprise and I actually just started on the AMT/platz kit (which has been sitting in a box for 2 years) after watching season 3 again...

The main flaw in the AMT is the shape/height of the shuttle bay which isn't quite like the Ent-C's.

The platz re-release comes with alternative parts for the deflector and the bottom/tail end of the secondary hull to make the Yamaguchi.

Hey guys,

Thanx for the kind words. As for the replies:

Atemylunch > it's a StepFour Basic 540.

Scaramanga > IPMS is big. There is one here nationally this weekend (Netherlands), but i won't be showing anything there. Still have a trauma from back 20 years ago, when i would show up at my local modelhobbyclub with my sci-fi kit. Would normally take some time for the laughter to fade and the comments to stop ("Wow, a good 6 parts in that big box" or "What's this, a ventilator ?")..

Maybe next year.

Bmused55 > That is some seriously cool looking LCAR. Very detailed, and thanx for the offer. What software are you using for this ?

B26354 > The hangar on the AMT kit looks very much like the Zhukov/Yamaguchi version. The C has a much narrower hangar.

My hangar is too wide as well. We're working on a new drawing for the sec hull, which takes care of the differences. I'll be using the "old" sec hull shown here, and machine the new one out of the old one.

Next few days is more CAD work than hands-on modelling, so updates will be a bit fewer.

Cheers,

Wasili

I use Adobe Illustrator for 99% of the work and Adobe Photoshop to create optomized files that are as small as possible yet maintain excellent quality. BTW, I forgot to mention, my offer is for a free copy of the MSD. I'm not trying to peddle my products on your thread, just so there is no confusion.

Thanks Wasili, looks like a handy machine.

What software do you use to drive it?

The machine comes with its own software. Quite handy. You can import a number of files, such as .dxf or .hpgl, without any special software modules. The g-code files i use for the parts in this thread require a "3d"module, making it possible to import those files as well.

Cheers,

Wasili
