STUDIO SCALE 3D PRINTED TIE FIGHTER AND TIE INTERCEPTOR

I have a quick update to share. There are some impurities in the factory applied primer and some artifacts left over from the 3D printing process. I am using 1,000 grit wet dry sandpaper and Mr Hobby 1500 to clean things up.

I have a quick update to share. It is my understanding that there are off the shelf commercially available paints that are a close color match for the Tie Fighter. With that in mind I went to my local Home Depot and purchased a selection of gray paint and primers to test.

The Rust-Oleum Enamel Satin Slate Blue looks like a good match so I decanted the paint from the spray can which yielded approximately 1/4 pint of paint.

The paint has a fairly thick consistency so I thinned the paint with Testors Enamel Thinner at a ratio of 50% paint to 50% thinner so I could shoot it with my airbrush.

wow those are very clean prints. Did you purchase the digital files and printed them yourself, or they shipped you the physical model?

I’m getting very good results with the Rust-Oleum enamel paint. It’s a paint and primer all in one so it has excellent adhesion properties and it is very durable. I can sand it, buff it, polish it and use solvent based fillers on it and the paint won’t wrinkle or melt. The only downside is it takes a few days to dry, but that is par for the course when working with enamel paint.

That parts for the Tie Fighter are all painted with the Rust-Oleum Satin Slate Blue.

Up next I’m going to use the Rust-Oleum Painters Touch Ultra Cover Flat Gray Primer for the cockpit and front canopy frame. I’m going to use the Krylon Color Max Primer Gray Primer for the off color panel details around the fuselage. And I’m going to use the Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel Black for the Faux Koolshade panels.

I painted the front facing canopy with the Rust-Oleum Flat Gray Primer but it lacked contrast.

So I made a run to my local Home Depot and purchased a few more cans of spray paint to test.

The Rust-Oleum Satin Charcoal Gray looks good so I tested it out.

The Charcoal Gray looks much better.
