Street Judge WIP

Wow, everything looks really great! I was wondering - could you provide more info on how you painted the Nerf gun for the weathered/realistic look? I am working on my first build and haven't painted anything for a realistic look before. I have watched several tutorials on weathering props, but honestly your paint job looks way better than the ones in the tutorials. I have the same Nerf gun and plan to use it for a budget-friendly Lawgiver from the newest film, not doing many modifications other than using a Dremel on the raised Nerf branding bits and then paint.

Looks great. I am a huge fan of Dredd, especially 'Comic Dredd'.

Have a similar Nerf gun that looks quite a bit like the Dredd 3D lawgiver. Really should work on that sometime.

More 'Nerf-giver' info.

Ok, as illustrated straight 'out of the box', the first thing I wanted was for it to be functional and still work as a nerf gun, so no internal mods at all.

Nerf branding and excessive raised sections sanded flat.

Outer shell is plasticard (because it glues together with Revell plastic glue really well), that is then fixed to the nerf gun with Araldite epoxy glue and filled with liquid modelling filler. Then base coat with 2 coats of primer (Humbrol is what I used but most paints should be fine).

The whole thing then got 2 coats of matt black spray, with additional matt black paint watered down and painted into the recesses. Allow to dry.

The weathering is very light drybrushing with Games Workshop's Citadel 'Leadbelcher'. Very light means just that almost all the paint worked off the brush onto kitchen roll or similar, so that hardly any paint is visible, before gently brushing over the base black. It is built up with several layers over time. A lighter/brighter silver (Citadel 'runefang steel') was added as a final highlight to the ejector port.

Then paint over the flat black areas again to crisp up the edge contrast and paint in some of the watered down black to emphasize any edges within the silver highlighted areas.

Oh yes, the brush used for drybrushing should be a good quality one, On this I used a half inch Winsor & Newton watercolour brush.

Also finally got some half decent chain.

And this weekend managed to paint and weather it, and the name badge, and the eagle and shoulder pad.

Thank you for the painting/weathering details, will help me a lot when I start painting. Your chain looks great as does everything else. That shoulder eagle is amazing. Keep the pics coming, I love this build! I am picking up a pair of boots very similar to the ones you started with tomorrow. I will only need to paint the brown leather part that covers the calf black (Dredd 2012), as everything else on the boot is black. Do you think it would be worth ordering leather paint just for that or would acrylic craft paint work (all that is on hand in my area)?

Hey 'HeyLetsRock' thanks.

If your boots are already the right colour and its only the brown leather that needs painting I'd think acrylic would be fine. On mine (Wulf motorcross) the brown section is embossed suede and actually didn't take the spray too well and will need additional work during the weathering stage.

Any other opinions out there?

Great Work, coming along nicely. Thanks for the tip on painting, I will start painting my plastic bits on my built soon. :cool

Thanks for the input. I just picked up my boots this evening (they were a Craigslist find) and they too have the embossed suede. They are Men's US size 8 O'Neal Element motocross boots (which, if there are any other ladies out there looking for boots, this size is about perfect if you wear a womens US 9.5 or 10). They do have O'Neal plastered on them in rubber in 3 or 4 places on each boot, so there are probably better brands to start with that would take less mods. I don't mean to highjack your WIP thread with a bunch of questions relating to my build so I will start my own very soon! lol Would love to see some close ups of your boots when you get them touched up and weathered.

(I did start a build WIP thread, here it is: http://www.therpf.com/f71/female-street-judge-build-wip-194875/ )

Awesome! Looks great. Love that first kind of dark shot that's like the DREDD 2012 cover, others are very nice too. Are you going to a Con in this or debuting it at Halloween? Glad you posted this today, I needed some inspiration to get out of the house early and scavenge for Dredd items in the flea markets. Also, foam is not my friend! Will update my WIP with my foam beginnings shortly.

Wow! That's epic. I seriously am thinking about tackling a build like this after my 2012 build is completed. Inspiring, to say the least.

Know this is a year old but awesome costume and design choices and you gave so good details on what you did. Is there anything more that should be known about the shoulders? I'm attempting to do a comic Dredd look and this is my first cosplay/crafts project so quite new to it all. I've opted to purchase items like gun, helm, etc but bit baffled on how to get the eagle shoulder done.

Hey 'cobalt blue' thanks for your comments, and resurrecting this zombie thread, has it really been that long?

The eagle wasn't too bad, a bit of patience and lots of test fitting will see you through. There's heaps of reference and help here on the RPF.

Good luck, start a thread and keep us informed. Dredd was my first cosplay too (since childhood when it was just play). Be warned there does seem to be some level of addiction with costumes once you start. {Doctor Who-10th doctor costume = done, Indiana Jones = 90% complete, Ghostbusters 10% started and I have a pile of random Viking/Asgard stuff that may come to something yet}.
