Stranger Things (Netflix)

Being a teenager is when we're trying on different personalities to see which one is "right". Hence all the angst and rebellion and such, to whatever degree. Steve started out being the way he'd found was the way to succeed. He was popular, his friends approved of his behavior, it had probably gotten him laid a few times... But then stuff happened that made him start to feel uncomfortable being that person. There were parts of the equation that worked... but you could see him more and more not being comfortable with the jerky behavior he'd done before. I almost cheered when he told his pre-existing friends where they could stick it. Standing up for what you feel is right in the face of what the people you want to like you are telling you you should do is a big personal-growth step, and he took it.

I'm hoping he is one of the characters whose arc continues in season two. I don't believe in one-and-done redemption. That's an ongoing Star Wars debate -- if Vader-turned-Anakin had lived at the end of ROTJ, how the hell would he have been able to atone for all the crap he'd done over the last quarter-century? I see how Nancy is toward him at the end as more of a... *thinks* ..."This is the guy I thought I was getting involved with originally, and now he's actually starting to act his own conscience and not going along with his friends... But now we have to see if it sticks." She's wary of backsliding, and with good reason. But I trust him to want to be with her more than with the friends that made him increasingly feel "off". I trust that he's going to like how he feels in his own skin now more than before. I'm also hoping he and Jonathan can start to see each other differently now.

This is a great thread, love all the comments.
One thing that I noticed is that the black background effect used when Ele was "in trance" in the water tank, was very similar to the movie Under the Skin with Scarlett Johanssen, check it out, very creepy movie.

I can't wait for the next season.

My mom and dad finally completed the first season. They both enjoyed it. My mom liked it because it reminded her of King's novels from that time, and Dad dug it because of the 1980s feel of it. :)

My hubby and I made that comment as well. Great movie and amazing show. :)

I was also thinking about the "Suspension of disbelief" or rules that are created in the world of this new show. Just some thoughts that occurred to me while watching the show.

inter-dimensional portals exist. Mirrored or backwards/the upside down lands and 2 or more versions of more of our world.
There is agencies that are keeping secrets in our backyards.
Monsters that can travel back and forth into the real world. Just monsters in general- albeit humanoid- with no faces.
People with super human powers, powers can be trained. which means we probably all have the powers?? It didnt seem Ele was born special?? or revealed.
The "Circa 80's" tag can mean any part or time in the 80's?

BTW I believe they have to get rolling on the next season as these actor will look a year or more old if they wait too long.

If I remember correctly, Eleven was born of a woman who was experimented on by the lab while she was preggers with the girl. She escaped/was released (can't remember) and then the lab abducted El while she was very little. Something along those lines.
I took it her powers were the direct result of the experiments performed on her mother.

I think the inference was that they took the baby by C-section and told the mother she lost it through medical complications. And then yeah, I also took the powers were from the experiments.

Finally got to see this over the weekend.
Loved it! I was the same age as these kids in 1983, so it really struck a chord with me.
Kinda heartbroken that Eleven didn't get a family :(

They were experimenting on her Mom using LSD and isolation chambers. "Altered States" on LSD, man!

I always assumed that the "shroom juice" that Eddie was drinking in that movie was some kind of LSD. Damn, that was great movie. Me and my buddies were really into getting wasted back then. We took a cutting torch to a big water tank and tried to make our own isolation tank. Had no LSD, but the herbage went well with it. And of course we never had enough salt for the water. We raided our moms' stashes of "ice cream salt" but it never was enough for real floatation.:lol

So I finally found time to catch up on this, on ep.5 right now. I gotta say I'm hooked, the kids are brilliant, and the 80's setting doesn't feel gimmicky. I occasionally get a sense of himage to the 80's like Spielberg style, or Stand By Me, but it's subtle. More a case of, it's just a setting where the kids can't google answers (gotta ask a teacher) or be in constant contact via phone (so missing kids aren't immediately noticed), and that is part of the problem/plot rather than a 'hey, look, nostalgia!'.

I enjoy the 8-Bit Cinema videos. And they've done one for Stranger Things. :)

As crazy as it sounds, I agree with this idea. Have Telltale do a Stranger Things game that fits into the show's universe. The point and click gameplay would be best suited for ST and its retro-style story.
