Stormtrooper Oddities

Low budget or not, I think they were up against the clock and just shot the film. Happy to complete it, what with the sandstorms and the R2-D2 problems and everything else.

I'm sure they didn't think (or care) that we would be checking these stills 30 years later with a microscope looking for gaffer tape and missing buttons and shins that split when they walk or missing stripes.

Not that there's anyhitng wrong with that..... ;)

I think I need to start a disinformation correction campaign. ;)

SW was not a low budget production.

The average budget for a movie in the late 70s was about $5 million. No, SW was not a lavish budget either, but they started with 7 which was quite respectable and ended up spending 10.

Not low budget. ;)

Thank you. I'm sick of hearing people refer to Star Wars as a little B movie that took off unexpectedly. Sure, it's success was unprecedented, but Fox was making a significant investment in it's success based on the huge American Graffiti boxoffice. If Star Wars had tanked, there would've been a good chance that Fox wouldn't be here today.

Well according to the book The Cinema of George Lucas, he orignally agreed on a budget $3 million. He said with only that much he'd have to break it up into 3 movies. Then they agreed to do it for under $10 million. He said he was practically working for free. Then it was $2 million over budget and he wanted more money but only got $20,000. So it may have cost more than the movies of the time but it seems it still wasn't enough to do what he wanted. For him it was a low budget movie.

I really don't look at this thread as criticizing or scrutinizing the details or lack of attention to detail as much as it's more of a treasure hunt. All the little details that you completely miss and are completely irrelevant somehow bring you joy when you go back and give it a closer look. The budget of the film really doesn't give or take away from the magic. It really wouldn't make a difference if it cost 20 million. The innovations that were being pioneered at the time is really what should be applauded. The fact that it's been 30 years and here we are dissecting the films frame by frame says a lot.

I'm taking an awful risk George, this had better work. :lol

:p

...although come to think of it, I'm sure Alan Ladd said this to Georgie-boy a few times during production.

I agree the budget doesn't take away from the magic. It's amazing that the way it was time even with the new techniques they used produced such an amazing film. I do think that if they had more time and money that we might not have seen as much of a lack of attention to detail.

Looking at it now after 30 years it does look cheesy and some things don't make sense. But being kids back then we were awestruck. I don't know why but the prequels just don't have that "magic" to me that the OT did. But this is a great thread. It's great to see the screen caps then try to see them in the movie without stopping and see if they are actually noticeable.
