STII flip-grid Comm - based on real radio?

This might be old news by now, but in perusing aircrew survival stuff on ebay, I ran across a vest containing a radio with a mighty familiar looking interface:

Anyone recognize the thing? Military guys, have you seen it?

If I remember correctly they were made from some Korean or Vietnamize radio. I'm sure someone here can fill in the details.

Yup.. Vietnam era walkie talkie. There are several models with similar controls... I've been trying to match up the one that's closest.

The speaker holes don't match on the one kit that's out there (the "Captain JTK")... On mine the additional holes are drilled out.

The body of the comm is a metal "project box", another found item.

Im sorry.

I hate that Communicator.

I was so disgusted when I saw it,..I remember, thinking of they SCREWED UP the COMMUNICATOR, the rest of the movie is probably gonna suck.

Luckily, it didnt.

However, you could HAND me the original screen used prop and I probably say "No thank you"

I like to pretend it never happened. Kind of like... ALIEN III

Yes I was there during ST3 and yes that was parts from a radio that they wanted to use in the film.

Modern Props had polished the metal radio boxes and they looked fairly good but we felt all wrong for Trek.

So the guys made the box com using parts from a few of the radions giving it the chorme polished look they liked.

Note the 1130X was their address on Florance Blvd back then and I was asked what details we could add and I suggested the Transporter lock LED.

Knowing Steve and how many holes he drilled I bet he added to the speaker grill.

One last note, the power buttons were small push buttons on the bottom, watch Captian Kirk holding his and see him pushing these two buttons.

One problem with these were if is was set on a flat serface it would light up and waste the batteries.

Wow,that thing is hideous, it looks so much less sleek and cool than the original. It looks like something that was manufactured in the early 80's for about 10 bucks....oh wait.....it was!

Yeah I hated that Communicator too (except for when I finally got a replica, now I feel a sense of "completeness" :lol)

Even worse than the Comnunicator tho was that hideous Tricorder

I didn't like them at first, but they grew on me eventually. I rationalized that these were the ultra heavy duty version for trips were they were likely to get banged around more than the usual comms. :)

Well $10.00 is about what the project box cost… add in all the labor of drilling all those holes to both the upper and lower grill and making the plastic ends and face plate, well it does add up.
Remember this movie was the make or break film. The Slow Motion Movie was not doing well and ran way over budge (specially when they added in ALL costs of anything Trek incurred for the past ten years) so it was up to Harv Bennett to make it more on a TV Budget and make it a winner as well, so cost cutting was the order of the day, rentals from Modern Props seemed a lot cheaper than making.
Credit Modern Props for doing a better com out of pocket and not making any more than the original rental for the Walkie Talkies they were going to use.
And same thing for the tricorders, again units Modern Props all ready had on hand…
It could have been worst…

Actually WOK is full of clunky stuff... for example these inexplicable control panel cutaway shots that look like studio equipment they had laying around or something

And that awful revolving-door "death compartment" in Engineering. Looks like they repainted the Klingon Bridge from TMP. And what exactly is Spock doing in that little tube there... mixing the matter and antimatter by hand? :lol

Aren't we always complaining about effects-laden pieces with lousy writing and poor acting?

Given the tradeoff, I think they - and you- made the right choice. :)

There's a place in Pasadena called "C+H surplus" and

they were selling that walkie talkie.

I know they have been slowly going out of business, but you might want

to check if they still have some.
