Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/WIP - Con pics on last page

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Mask DONE and soft parts(Updated 1/21/13)

Update: Seems I am following the pattern of this whole damn build. I design and build one thing, hate it and improv something else.

So I completely finished the mask. I am most pleased with it. It turned out pretty well. I added a deco hinge on the back because as I took it off and on over the past couple weeks, the seam started ripping so I placed the hinge in that area to help keep it from doing it again.

The segmented breastplate didn't make me all warm and fuzzy so I scratched it and built a "Gannon style" half plate(?). It will be over the left half of my chest and will be secured with re-purposed belts.

I couldn't figure out how to use this cool cog stencil so instead of putting it aside, I decided to gold leaf the stencil itself and use it as a couple deco pieces for the plates I am putting on the half plate.

Forgive the pictures, it is the camera on my phone.

That's a killer mask. Nice to see steampunk where it isn't just a gear glued on to a top hat or leather bracelet.

Thanks Rob. High praise coming from you, love that krang build you did for the halloween contest. And I hate that too. Three gears tooled into a bracelet isn't too impressive.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Mask Finished and Armor update(Updated 1/23/13)

Update: I did a little mask and armor mock up this morning. I added the plates to the armor and I am hoping they add to it yet still stays familiar to the base.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Mask and Armor mock up update(Updated 1/24/13)

Super cool! The left-half vest will offset the right-side-larger kidney plate nicely from the back. Under the belt strapped half-vest, maybe a plain brown linen or muslin shirt to carry the colorway forward from the movie's brown thermal shirt?

That was part of the reason I went with the left side. Also, I was amazed at another base Bane build who built everything from a functional standpoint and made sure everything had a purpose. I took that to heart on almost every piece. I also put it on the left side because he is right handed and the gauntlet is on the power hand. In a fighting stance, the left side is forward and could use more protection and the right needed to be free for strength and mobility. Kinda silly for that much thought into a costume but I did.

I was thinking a brown shirt too. That was the color I was going to go with on the henley thermal. My only issue with that was the pants. They are mainly a light OD green with the knee patches and some trim in a darker green. I am thinking it may look stupid together.

WOW! Look at that mask.

Let's see the jacket!

And for your USMC sweater, if you want black and genuine GI.... US Army wears a black sweater. It just has a minor V collar and not crew like the USMC.

Thanks man. The sweater isn't a huge deal for me. I looked at this bane as a collector of gear from many sources. Thanks for the heads up, I was just using my sweater since it just sits in my closet with the rest of my old military issue.

Also update: I finished the gold leaf last night and placed some of the stencil on the plates and I think it looks pretty sweet. I wish the pictures showed how much the gold leaf pops. Also finished, mounted and weathered the kidney plate. (The weathering is a little crappy but I will deal or do it again.)

Threw in a couple mock dress up shots....just for kicks.

I appreciate that Seth. I seem to be coming to the end now. It has been a lot of hours of trial and error, re-designs, fabrication and detailing. I think it is pretty good for a first build. As we speak, I am creating my list for the next build. Perhaps it will go over a little better with the masses.

I am still thinking of building a v2.0 with that awesome tank you drew for me. I seem to work better with designs I can change how I see fit instead of a static one. God knows what I would do if I built an IM...

Nice dude, you are gonna be getting some attention at GF and SF!!!

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/First WIP -Armor coming together/w golf leaf(Updated 1/25/1

Update: I finished the gold leaf on the back of armor. It looks pretty good. I just have to weather, measure and install the leather straps to secure it.

I included some first full dress mock ups pics and realized that I have to trim the armor in the back some because it is rubbing on the kidney plate that I attached to the battle belt. I put on the pouches and outside of a few things, it is looking good. The shirt will be turned brown this weekend and yes, the puttees are on backwards but I didn't care for the moment. I will do some better pics when the missus is home and I don't have to hold the camera.

I also have a pair of gaiters en route via ebay. I like the puttees but I want to see how some canvas gaiters would look.

As always, comments and feedback is always welcome. Fresh eyes bring fresh perspective and my deadline is about two weeks away.

Thanks Durkness. That detailing pattern really paid off. It was a lot of work to fil them but well worth it. I appreciate the feedback and compliment. High praise coming from you...

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/WIP -Armor strapping prep(Updated 1/28/

Small update: So I trimmed the back of the armor at the bottom by about a half an inch so the kidney plate doesn't get caught on it. Doing so, I had to re-seal and soon re-paint the area.

I cut the belts I have to the right measurements and hope to have them in place tomorrow morning. The double buckle will be at my waist and the thinner will be under my arm. The extra on either end of both belts will be inside the armor.

Pretty weak update but I am close to the end now so the biggest steps are behind me.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/WIP -Armor trimmed/strapping prep(Updated 1/30/13)

Update: Armor strapping is connected and the fit is pretty good. Still a few issues between the armor and the kidney plate but I can live with it. The colors on the straps are a little different but I feel it brings some character to it. The connections aren't pretty but they are solid and on the inside so no one will see them.

I bought some canvas gaiters on ebay to see how they would look instead of the puttees. I liked how they looked but they were too small. There was no size so I gambled and lost. But that is life.

Just have to weather the armor and dye my shirt tomorrow and I should be done. When I compare it to many of the awesome builds on this forum, it appears to me that I could have set the bar higher but I am pleased with the final result. I finished my first build when many many others did not and I am proud.

Re: Steampunk Bane (TDKR)/WIP -Armor 95% Done(Updated 2/1/13)

Update: The armor is weathered and clear coated. I wanted to do some battle damage but I am still a rookie and I didn't want to ruin it a week away from the deadline. I am satisfied with the final result.

I am getting the totes out in a few and prepping for the dying. Final step...wish me luck.
