Stargate Headpiece Project

Yup. Got myself a little treat recently and was just wondering if anyone knew the paint scheme/pattern for the head pieces and collars of the three main God characters: Ra, Anubis & Horus?

These are cut-outs of other peoples' paint ups.

I've been checking the DVD, some behind the movie specials and some pictures, but found nothing really definitive or really clear enough to work from - more of a general idea that the scheme is two-tone gold or perhaps bronze and then silver. I wanna try and go as accurate to how the real props were done as possible, if possible. :)

Any help or advice would be appreciated, as I don't really know where else to look for answers.

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Depends if your are going with the MOVIE version..or SG1.

Movie versions were plated, then weathered.

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

I haven't painted any Stargate armor so the only advice I can offer is to make it shiny! :D

Thanks. I'll shoot him a pm once I worked up my nerve! :)

WOW, thanks. Are those painted similar to the movie versions? Great pictures. :thumbsup

Well... I scored me a set of scaled versions, as I sadly wouldn't be able to afford or even be able to display the full sized versions. There was some full scaled versions for sale here in the junkyard some time back, not sure if they sold.

Cool info. I'm going for the movie version.

For the same effect as plated, would you think rub 'n buff could do the trick convincingly enough? Have seen pretty realistic looking metal finishes with that stuff and not like paint that nearly always looks like it was painted.

Thanks for all the help so far, guys. :thumbsup

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Got in touch with Dymerski, definitely the right thing to do, so thanks for that suggestion! :thumbsup

Have been prepping the pieces, repairing some very minor and very clean breaks - can hardly see the seam line, so no filling is required, which is good and makes my job so much easier.

Don't think I'll be able to plate them - would cost too much, imo - and I've seen pretty decent results with Rub 'N Buff, so I'm gonna buy a few tubes and check them out, see if they work on these. Otherwise I'll have to come up with another paint that doesn't look like paint, but actually looks like plated metal.

Just love the designs in that movie. A perfect marriage between art and technology. :thumbsup

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Well, while waiting to get the Rub 'N Buff, do anyone have any examples of the various gold and copper versions, as I've only really seen examples of the silver.

I was fortunate to get to look around the Legends warehouse just before an event and the guy didn't mind if I took pics so I did. Just wish I could have set up and done a real study. You take what you can get.

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Sweet. And thanks for all the help, guys.

First progress shot of the Horus main body head piece.

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Looks Great!!!!

I saw some stuff in Micheals (art & craft store)that might work. It was some antique copper and antique Brass faux finish kits. I will try to get a brand name or somthing

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Progress on the Anubis main body head piece:

And here they both are together - this picture is taken with flash whereas the others are without flash:

And one of the Horus, really showing off the shine of the Rub 'N Buff:

Just hope I'm getting this right. :)

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Tomorrow will be filled with lots of trimming and sanding of parts to get ready to paint up and assemble. This is really shaping up. :thumbsup

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Looking really really good, cant wait to see them aged and tarnished!

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Yes, the weathering will be interesting to do. On the smaller MRC kits I just painted with the metal colors (no rub 'n buff then) and then gave it a wash with black. But I'm thinking... I need to go a lot thinner in the wash if I use black this time - it looked great and you could see all the details of the lines, etc., but it'd look wrong in this larger scale.

Any suggestions to good, natural metal weathering techniques?

Added the ears/frills on Anubis, but am waiting to show a picture until I've finished the ears/frills on Horus as well. I really hope I'm getting the two-tone color scheme right on the Horus... would be a pain to have to fix mistakes.

What I have planned was to have the base be the pyramid on Abydos with the front chamber - not sure whether I should do Ra's pyramid on top, but I'll build it so I can add that later if needs be.

Then I'll have the three masks and collars as the three moon symbol of Abydos - the point of origin symbol that is drawn in the movie: Ra above the pyramid and Anubis and Horus on either side of him.

Since it'll be displayed in a square shelf I had planned on putting up two stargates on either side of the shelf wall to simulate the stargates connecting, but that would mean I would have to redo the symbols for the Abydos one on the MRC gates I have. A coverstone would be cool instead.

Yup, big plans... can't wait to show you guys. :)

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Anybody got the movie on HD that can do a few screen captures of the Anubis details, but more importantly some good shots of Ra's mask? Any other good pictures would be appreciated as well. :thumbsup

Re: Stargate Headpiece - Paint Question

Well, promised an update. Finished the ears/frills and the heads are just on for show. Will work out some lighting feature for their eyes down the line.

Enjoy:
