Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

JJ and Kathy both have said Palpatine has been in the works since they started on TFA. There's concept art of the DS2 ruins in The Art of The Force Awakens. From what I gather JJ never wanted Snoke to be the main bad. I mean everyone keeps saying the only reason they are bringing him back is that Snoke is dead. Really though? They could have easily whipped up someone new or elevated Ben to the main bad guy status.
Something about that can't be right. Access media has been all over the map on this... "There was no plan", "it was planned all along", "I had complete creative control"...

They can't all be true. And as shown, you can't trust JJ.

I don't want to spend time looking up all the examples, but here's two.

Doesn't really matter. They opted not to use in 7 or 8, which makes it pretty dumb to ressurect out of nowhere in 9.

imagine hating a movie so much before seeing it that you just have to moan about it every day until you officially not go watch it...

Or imagine you can’t wait to watch it, so you can continue to complain more.

I wonder if the threads on Terminator are this bad... I wouldn’t know because Dark Fate didn’t look appealing so I just don't go to the thread or waste a second of my time complaining about it... or picking apart the movies i didn’t like in the franchise.

But I guess the point is to kill the fun for anyone else who may be looking forward to going out and watching A STAR WARS MOVIE.

I can only speak for myself and I believe I'm kind of caught in the middle. I still wanna see it and be done with it and kinda hoping they'll manage to make a decent movie with a decent story. Not holding out too much hope if I'm honest. It's not gonna affect me the same way TLJ did, if it's awful I'll probably just shrug. And things do look a kinda fishy with ideas seemingly pulled out of certain orficies.
On that note I kinda still try not to bury it. This whole Palpatine back and forth is barely more than speculation as we stil lhave no idea if the guy is really back, if it's a flashback, if it's a ghost, etc...and yes JJ does have a track record of deliberately misleading the audience. I think it's fine if we discuss what we think of certain ideas and potentials. But I see no point taking a trailer apart and having an issue with every frame without knowing if said shots are even gonna be in the final cut. When trailer 2 hit people were all over the map about dark Rey. Now nobody even mentions that. So I myself am in the "not too chuffed, let's see what's gonna happen" camp which is probably a one-man camp.

Anyone who looks in on this thread obviously holds Star Wars as something important in their lives. Its a fun escape we've loved since childhood so if someone fu cks with that then we're sure gona vent about it. Nothing wrong in that.
However, sometimes poodoo happens for the better. The only hope (if we ignore the trailers for now) is that the overwhelming fan disapproval of TLJ has spurred Disney on to deliver us a far better finale than originally planned.

I've never said there was a plan. What I'm saying is Palpatine returning in some form isn't something that JJ pulled out of the blue for this film. It was an idea that's been talked about and discussed by people at Lucasfilm since TFA. With Snoke gone, this was a good a time as any to make those ideas a reality.

I don't think it is completely out of nowhere. I mean they still have yet to explain who Ben is talking to when talking to the Vader mask. Which just happened to be the last thing Palpatine electrocuted.

I just find it funny that it's suddenly "cool" to be into Star Wars since 2015 with TFA, but the hardcore fans have stuck it out even in the long years between trilogies. Even with the PT about to emerge in May 1999 I remember my friend and I getting ragged on by the popular kids at school for being nerds. Yet he was the biggest kid in my school, the star football player and got on with everyone. Yet they still gave him hell for his fandom. Relentlessly I might add. Now being a "nerd" is trendy. Back then it meant getting bullied. Seeing Star Wars t-shirts on 50 year old men and 20 something girls is a common occurrence at my work. (I work with the public) Which is fine I guess but growing up it was the kind of thing you had to hide whereas now you can wear it like a badge of honor. I don't get it.

Makes me think of this meme.

The money that the new movie will make will likely be more from the general audience and some hardcore fans (who either love everything SW- or those or hate the new stuff but are morbidly curious)...

I don't love everything SW, nor am I morbidly curious about the new stuff. I'm a lifelong fan, I don't consume anything but the movies (aside from the Rebels series) and there's plenty of SW material I hate. None of it is the new stuff, though. Yes, I like TLJ, but I can certainly see why some folks don't. I'm pumped that in just over a week I'll be sitting in that theater at 7pm to be among the first to watch the next episode of this thing I love so much. I'm hoping it's great. If not, at the very least, I hope we got a fun trilogy out of all of this. As far as I'm concerned, so far, so good. Either way, I'll decide afterward if it's worthy of sitting alongside my OT, or if I go back to just keeping that "holy trinity" as my SW. I've certainly picked and chosen before. The PT came and went, and I was disappointed, but nothing tarnished SW, ESB, and ROTJ for me.

Responses like that are one of the reasons why I keep coming back to this thread and others like it. If only the media and others in the fan base could be as reasonable as you, I think we'd be in a better place. I have to say, for all of the heated debate on the RPF, I feel that we've always come to recognize our mutual love of this series and I hope that kind of comradarie can win in the end.

No. Palpatine is back because JJ wanted him to be, from the very start. Lawrence Kasdan and him were tossing the idea around when working on TFA. Mister smoke and mirrors was never going to be the main bad guy for this trilogy.
Nope sorry. Survey says X. Just more JJ revisionist history brought on by forced changes to TFA brought on by production of TLJ. Don't believe me then just ask Simon Pegg or Maryann Brandon.

Trust me, if JJ is good at anything, it's not giving necessary exposition.

Where did Luke's lightsaber come from in TFA JJ?

Doesn't matter, just stick it in there so the movie can happen.

That reminds of the Pitch Meeting for Solo:

Studio Exec: "How does Han speak Chewbacca's language?"
Screen writer: "Because I wrote that it in the script."
Studio Exec: "But when did he learn that?"
Screen writer: "When I wrote it in the script"

I lament the days when putting on a Star Wars shirt meant opening myself to ridicule. There was a long time when they weren't even easy to find. Ironically, Disney had some of the best Star Wars merchandise, but it was park exclusive.

I try to explain that to people now, and it's just incomprehensible to them. I'm sure that's part of the reason the whole thing seemed more "special". I met some of the best friends I've ever (and still) have, because of me wearing a Star Wars shirt in public.
