Here's what I've personally come to terms with ..
Firstly, i was & am a fan of TLJ, however, I can now see & admit that RJ was NOT the right person to write that part of the trilogy. He had themes & directions in the SW universe that he wanted to explore, but it shouldn't have been done using these characters in the last third of an ongoing story. He should have held it for his original trilogy.
The SW that Lucas created was, at it's heart,a strict fairy tale told in a completely original setting. He had the characters we cared about together at the end of two of the films in triumph, & in ESB, we still felt sure Han was gonna be ok. When Ford wanted his character to die to show growth & add some weight to the Rebels plight, George shot it down.
Again, I don't HATE TLJ, but I've come to accept that the characters I care about, standing together in triumph at the end of this last film, would've been a pretty great thing.
