So they made a clone that turned out to not want to be evil (or had no power) and just... let him... go live a normal life???? Or he somehow escaped hell planet on his own??

Apparently the novelization reveals that Rey's father was a failed Palpatine clone. Their attempts to plug the plot holes are just creating even bigger holes.
I so much preferred the idea of old wizened Palps with his monsterface and evil hood getting frisky with a lady like Cameron Mitchell in Low Blow...

Young, full head of hair, looks nothing like Ian McDiarmid, has a look of worry and love for his daughter. Yup, sounds like a (im)perfect Palpatine clone to me.

what’s amazing to me is Star Wars seems like a perfect case study of what not to do when trying to manage a project.

Just setting aside opinions on the new characters, agendas, etc, what shocks me most about this new trilogy is how incompetent the upper management of Lucasfilm is.

the story narratively is all over the place, significant reshooting, leaks, no unified vision, and poor personnel management (do you think Fegie would have allowed the Russo brothers to say fans of Ironman over Captain America in Civil war were fascist Nazis and manbabies?)

Just as Marvel is a fascinating case study of transforming and revitalizing an IP done right, Star Wars is like a thought experiment of what not to do.

If this is really "true" - that this "clone" pictured above is considered to be Palpatine's "son" - NO storyteller worth his salt is going to tell you that this isn't an important enough detail not to be addressed within *any* movie, let alone a Star Wars movie - especially when they've discussed Rey's lineage in the past two. This is such a fail it's mind-boggling.

Shouldn't the cloning of Palpatine post-ROTJ have been just a little bit more of a story point in the sequel trilogy? I'm the last person that needs things spelled out for me, but come on...

The Palpatine clone storyline is just the perfect storm of bad ideas coming in at the right time for Disney.

Fans didn’t like the Last Jedi? Well, how can we fix that?

Well, they were angry that Snoke died, so we need a new big bad. How about Palpatine? Everyone loves the emperor.

Fans are complaining that the old Legacy storylines were better. Well, didn’t they have a storyline where Palpatine gets cloned and comes back? Why don’t we just take that element and shoehorn it in?

People didn’t like that Rey isn’t related to anyone. Well, how else can we explain her Force vision where she sees a bunch of herself? Well, how about clones? And she has to be related to someone as well. Who can we say she’s related to? Clones…Palpatine…Palpatine clones…I got it!

Palpatine comes back as a clone and he’s actually Rey’s grandfather (but actually not because that’s not how lineage works. If that dude is a failed clone, that means she’s the daughter of a failed clone. She’s only a granddaughter if that guy is the son of Palpatine.)

I still think that JJ had a generic, maybe one page treatment for 8 and 9 and was tryi g to bend the storyline back to that after TLJ...but all above regarding managing the IP is spot on.

I still think if JJ has to “correct” episode 8 it would have been more impactful for Kylo if instead of Palpatine on Exogol it had been an unscathed Snoke sitting on the throne. Explain that he has lived and died for millennia and the body destroyed on the Supremacy was only a copy that he projected himself into.

it’s effectively the same as the Palps thing but at least Ben knows who Snoke is and there are personal stakes.

Can I just please point out the amount of "akchyually" comments that were just flying off the shelf when people were kind of baffled about good old Palpatine getting intimate with ladies and making babies and having a son quoting that Mara Jade was a concubine, the Emperor had a harem, in a Legends story he also had a son so it makes perfect sense now and it always did and it's nothing new...and how all those are now null and void in context of this story?

Boba Fett was a clone of Jango Fett and was considered his son...
