I would have been fine with a bit of romance in this new trilogy had it been set up and not tacked on at the last minute. It's just another choice that feels like a vain attempt to please as many people as possible rather than tell a coherent story.

No idea? I know there was big controversy that his robot hand didn’t fall and land on the rock when he died

...but if that was the case wouldn’t all their cloths stay in the real world too and the ghosts would appear to Luke bare ass?

Idk.. it’s all pick and choose I think

JJ was doing so much damage control he probably thought of that

“Don’t show lukes hand, I don’t need more internet nerds giving me a hard time!”

“Throw in the holdo maneuver line! That fixes everything!”

Lol
If we're staying true to the lore then Luke would have his original anatomy back same as Anakin in Return of the Jedi.

When look at why Rian wrote that it makes sense. He said he looked at Luke at realized that in that moment after getting his hand cut off, the hardest the hardest thing for him to hear was that Vader was his father. So he thought what's Rey's equivalent? In the first two films Rey wants to be Rey somebody, so the hardest thing for her hear in that moment is that she is a nobody.

And honestly I like how its played out, poor Rey has just learned how accept that she is nobody, when Ben comes along knocking her feet from under her and telling her, actually you are a somebody, that being the granddaughter of the most evil man in the galaxy.

Well, is being "Nobody" the hardest thing than hearing you're a "Somebody"?

I mean, I don't think that's the hardest thing to hear. Imagine all your success and talents hoping to be somebody, thinking that you're related to a hero or some big deal, only to realise that your success is because you're basically Hitler's grandchild. ( Yes, I realise that this may be used for the darth vader argument aswell, but it was established earlier in the film the Anakin Skywalker was a 'separate' entity and reacknowledged by Obi in comparison to palpatine who is literally the worst person out there.)

I like that take better IMO because the "Opposite" take on things is overused in Hollywood. It ruins the surprise. I can't really watch a lot of blockbusters for that very reason.

I'd prefer if they'd leave the nobody thing out and mention massacres or something and gave Rey an inherent dark side to her.

It would impact the audience more since like today, most people despise even the offspring of major figures such as Hitler.

At least in the communities I've seen. I wouldn't want the deaths of the children or grandchildren of Nazi's even though their grandfathers or fathers have put my ancestors through hell. I'm not responsible for my ancestor's actions, so why should they? but some people don't view it that way.

I think it contrasts Rian Johnson's point even further. Can you hate a person for their father's (or grandfather's) sins?

But then again, people who didn't like TLJ were either russian trolls or male white supremacists (IDK, whatever is the current trend)

I’m gonna go check it out again tonight now that I’ve sat on it a while.

11:40 Christmas Eve show! I’m going in baked this time! I will need it.

I don’t think it will change my mind... I liked it fine, I’m not disappointed because I wasn’t expecting it to work. I went for Kylo Ren/ Adam Driver and he did not let me down. The rest I don’t really care or remember...

And since I was in the trilogy for Adam Driver, I may have to put this one behind The Last Jedi.

There is said it. As a flick... Rian’s movie is better than JJ’s attempt to fix that same movie.

I like to think the vision in the dark side cavern in TLJ where Ray sees hundreds of her means that good ol Sheev had seeded women like Ego in GOTG in Hope's of finding a super powerful force user . She WAS one of thousands .

Also if Palpatine used the force to impregnate Shim Anakin's mom then went Skywalkers always Palpatines anyway????

Haven't caught up in the thread completely yet, so I apologize if I'm restating some points others have already made.

So many thoughts. In a nutshell, I think the movie was as good as it could have been with the poor setup of TFA and the abysmal efforts by RJ to monkey-wrench everything JJ did in TFA. I actually enjoyed it, because I was approaching it from a place of pure detachment after TLJ. And it allowed me to go forward not hating Star Wars, which after TLJ, I had accepted as the likely outcome of the ST.

Some specific thoughts during the movie:

Wow, so no dramatic reveal halfway through that the Emperor is back. They just put it in the first couple lines of the crawl, huh? Ok... And the crawl indicates that Kylo knew nothing beforehand and is looking to quash the Emperor? Ok, that is interesting.
Opening scene with Kylo was a great scene.

Luke's introduction in the ST was initially to show him on the island meditating with floating rocks all around him in order to convey his immense power in the Force after so many years as a Jedi. We already know that Rian decided to toss that out in favor of making Luke a Force-rejecting old grump, and they gave this intro to Rey in RoS, because Mary Sue.

The compressed timeline of events in order to force a sense of urgency was weird. "Palpatine is back. He's gonna destroy the galaxy in 16 hours." Wow, ok.

Every Star Destroyer has a planet-killing cannon? JJ really likes blowing up planets. Like, REALLY likes it.

Rey's Force healing doesn't seem as taxing as Baby Yoda's.

Hey, there's Rose. She's not too annoying here. The acting is more subdued. Good. Hope people are nice to her. I hated her character in TLJ, but actually wouldn't have minded more of her if she could have kept it toned down like this throughout.

Cheap trick w/ Chewie's supposed death. Not cool. If you lie to a relative and tell them that their brother died, but later say you were just joking, do you REALLY think their happiness will outweigh how pissed they are because you manipulated their emotions in the first place? Of course not, but hey, give it a go JJ. Maybe audiences will love you teasing Chewie's death.

The lightsaber duel from two places made no sense, but was cool.

Wow, the pacing is fast. This feels like four movies crammed into one. Discussions/decisions that should take hours or days take place in a few seconds, and then they're off! No chance for the story to breathe.

They still have the same person styling Harrison Ford's awful hair as in TFA, or a different person tried really hard (and succeeded) in matching its awfulness.

Han Solo never became a Force ghost, so while the scene with him and Kylo was cool and cathartic, if Kylo's just imagining it...it means he's just nuts, right?

"A Jedi's weapon should be treated with more respect." Said JJ to Rian, by way of Luke's Force ghost. Wow, that wasn't an obvious dig.

Luke's hair grew after he became a Force ghost.

I thought one of the new books said Leia never trained to become a Jedi. This shows she did, even to the point where she had made her own lightsaber.

Did they show Luke's green lightsaber in closeup here during the flashback? I didn't see it if so...

Now that Force healing is a thing, I laughed when Kylo died, because I thought, well Rey will just turn around and heal him and die, then Kylo will wake up and heal her, and so on, and so on, and the movie fades out. Then Kylo's body disappears faster than anyone's ever has before, and it was an obvious and awkward attempt to try to prevent too many folks from thinking this. Totally took me out of the movie.

So in past movies it was a thermal exhaust port they had to shoot, or a main reactor, or an oscillator...Do we REALLY need another story where this huge weapon or fleet is dependent upon this single object to disable it? An antennae? [sigh] Ok.

It's one thing not to explain HOW the Emperor is still alive, but it didn't even explain if he even really WAS the actual Emperor, vs. a clone within which the spirit of the old Emperor had transferred, or...? Shouldn't that at least have been made clear?

The CGI set and backgrounds with the Emperor in his temple look like they would look great in concept art or video games, but the lack of realism affects how much the scenes affect you.

I'm all for adult/sophisticated humor, and morally ambiguous characters. But in the end, I want to be able to bring my 12 year old to this, and some of the scenes with the Emperor are too dark/intense for a movie kids should be able to enjoy, if not always understand. There's going too far in one direction by having a battle with teddy bears. Then there's having Satanic chanting with faces melting off. Surely there is a middle ground, no?

Did they just seriously rip off the end of Endgame? "I am all the Sith." "I am all the Jedi." B'doosh. C'mon, JJ. I know you have Marvel-envy, and would forgive you if you ripped off a secondary plot or dialog element here or there, but the dialog of the climax? Since we have two SW movies abbreviated as "ROS," let's just call this one EG for Star Wars—End Game.

Despite the fact that many of the above observations are criticisms, I actually enjoyed the film overall.

Star Wars isnt a film. Its a movie. Made to make money.

Talking to my parents last night I mentioned I would self fund this short film idea Ive had. Its a lot of personal stuff.

They asked how I will get that money back. I told them I wouldnt.

The seemed shocked and I had to explain that sometimes you make movies... and sometimes you make film.

Movies are for money...

Film is your art.

They can be interchanged, but like Scarecrow Joe is saying, 3 seconds cut for million$$$ - its not even a question. The Kiss is not the hill a popcorn flick is gonna die on.

If a country wasnt gonna show the flick cuz they dont allow beige clothing - they would color correct every character.

If a country wont show cuz Wedge is wanted there for high crimes.... BYE WEDGE! SORRY FAN SERVICE! it was fun to have him in, but we got share holders.
agreed whole heartedly. art films can endure but are rarely financially lucrative. movies are pop escapism. its like top 40 pop music versus classical music. or illustration vs. fine art. both can be popular and both can endure but one is about appealing to the masses and making a profit and one is about vision, ideas and communication... last week on CBS Sunday Morning there was an interview with Harvey Keitel. he's been in many great films but seems to be a non bankable actor and never gets the lead roles. his take was also about how Hollywood is all based on making profitable popular movies. his roles in art films while recognized never really made him appealing as a bankable actor in the eyes of "Hollywood". he has a hard time getting roles in popular films but he gets small important roles for people like Martin Scorsese

"Why do you think at that point in time, Hollywood seemed to lose interest in you?"

"Gosh, if I knew that, I'd bottle it and sell it. I think they've lost interest in me now."

"You do?"

"Because everything is "box office". Not that things don't have to be box office, they have to be. But not everything. And right now, it's everything."

I just saw it. Were there some enrolling cringe moments? Yes. Was it entertaining and enjoyable? Yes. Did it replace the bad taste in my mouth left by TLJ? Yes.

Its Star Wars, not Citizen Kane.

I'm actually good with how the whole thing ended. I thoroughly enjoyed TFA and TROS. I'm going to see it again.

That all said, the future of the franchise has me worried.

Finally saw it... didn’t hate it... but I can’t say it was my favorite. I will say there were a lot of fun moments, loved that chemistry between Fin and Poe and the scene with Chewie and them and the holochess was fun, but those moments were so fleeting.

on the whole the movie felt to me exactly like it was made entirely by improv. Every scene is a frenetic “yes, and” into the next and it doesn’t feel like there’s a moment to really let any idea stand on its own. The movie never stalls but there are so many groaner moments too. When Rey lined up the sword thing with the death star wreckage my wife and I were groaning “what!? No. No nooo. Whhyyy”

But I liked the look of the sets in this one more than the last two. I liked Ren’s all-white inner-sanctum, giving me 2001 vibes. I liked the interior of the ship that Rey’s parents flew away on.

There were a lot of fun Falcon scenes and I’m always a sucker for that.

Overall my wife and I agreed, we just felt relief the sequel trilogy was over. But given a choice between the prequels and these? I’d take these in a heartbeat.

Now back to the Mandalorian, and fingers crossed for that Diego Luna show. I’m still a Star Wars fan (which is more than I can say for JJs Star Trek)

I like them for what they are. I watch them as i watched the originals. Like a kid watching big action sequences on alien planets with aliens, robots, spaceships, laser swords, blasters and hood ole underdog good vs evil. However the deep lore legends nerd in me pines for the lost oppurtunity. If they started back up filming with the zahn stories we would have gotten the endings for our beloved heroes we would have wanted. The fact is the ot principles are just too old. Would you guys really have wanted the last jedi to see a stunt double with lukes face cgd on flipping around ala dooku to be the one to defeat the first order? We got what we got. What we can hope for is that they allow auteur filmakers who understand star wars like favreau to make new stories that arent pulling 30 year old threads and trying to make sensible knots . Like the mandalorian and rogue one.
