I think they’re equally bad movies just for different reasons, though largely based on writing issues.

So I’ve a confusing question that I’m honestly not sure why I’m even bothering asking...
Red 5 is the call sign used by Luke in ANH which then becomes synonymous with that actual X-wing
AFAIK that X-wing was left/lost on Bespin post the fight with Vader, an presumably impounded by the Empire...
I always just assumed Luke got a new X-wing from the fleet afterworlds, but it can’t be renamed Red 5 again since we later see someone else entirely using the call sign later in ROTJ, unless possibly they’re even using Luke’s new X-wing if it was indeed renamed Red 5
Now, I’m pretty sure that guy also died in ROTJ along with that X-wing being destroyed... so that would insinuate either Lukes new Red 5 X-wing was being used in the fight by another pilot (perfectly believable cause you’d want every fighter you can muster) but if that’s not the same X-wing that’s fine too I guess...
But why would the Luke’s new X-wing automatically be renamed Red 5 if he was no longer even a member of Red Squadron and the ship itself having no special history attached to it?? Was Red 5 made a holy number nobody used again after Luke’s disappearance? Is that why there’s zero confusion over who Red 5 is when Rey says she’s Red 5 just out of the blue?
Did Disney just forget that original X-wing was lost on Bespin?
uhhgg my brain is melting
I still can’t wrap my brain around how Luke’s X-wing just automatically works after 10+ years of being underwater in the ocean... wait doesn’t that mean Luke could have indeed left at any time to help the resistance in TLJ, thus making him even more of a coward not going?? Uhhhgggg

To answer your questions......yes.

I’ve always thought that “Red Five,” “Gold Leader,” etc were call signs of the pilots themselves, rather than the craft they flew. Sort of like “Maverick” and “Goose.”

Does Rey say she’s Red 5, herself? I’m remembering someone saying something about “Red 5” showing up on “scanners” (or something. Exact wording eludes me.) But I don’t have any idea why they’d call it that, unless it was still “registered” in its internal systems as being assigned to Red 5, aka Luke. Any sort of in-world explanation aside, the real reason was just one more cheap hit of nostalgia. I’ll be the first to admit that.

Well in ESB the ship still has its red hash marks. And in ROTJ, I think it does too. But we probably don't get a clear look at the wing.

Side note. I love how Luke's X-wing gets new lights every movie. First it gets landing lights in ESB. Then it gets red and green navigation lights on the wings in ROTJ.

This confusion stems from George Lucas not understanding the use of call signs in the WWII documentaries he used for inspiration.
A squadron would be broken up into 'elements', usually 5 elements of 6 planes each, and each element would have it's own color designation and specific duty. For example, Red might be lead element, White might be top cover, Gold right flank low, Blue left flank high, Brown rear guard low. These designations only applied to single missions, though, so a guy who was Red 5 today might be White 2 tomorrow. It had nothing to do with the radio call sign painted on the plane or the pilot's nickname. It was a way of organising planes for a mission - like football plays on a chalkboard.

Also, as of ESB, the most recent designation for Luke in a squadron was as "Rogue Leader"- not "Red 5".

I just view it as another example of JJ forgetting about any movie that wasn't ANH when it comes to his nostalgia callbacks...

While Luke might have been Rogue Leader. His x-wing was and is still painted as Red 5.

Force ghost Luke lifting the X wing is a perfect microcosm of the entire movie. Fun to watch but once you put any thought into it it makes no sense. ******, you see the busted off wing panel being used as the door to Lukes hut just 30 seconds before a perfectly intact X wing is lifted out of ocean water its been sitting in for what, 5-10 years?

Well it makes perfect sense he would keep his ship from ANH on into ESB, it’s basically the Enola Gay of StarWars and he’s the war hero that piloted it. But the point remains it either shouldn’t be in ROTJ given the events in ESB unless he obtained a new one from the fleet (which again makes sense). I can even see him possibly repainting the new one to match his old one in memory of the ship, especially since he’d had her for years at that point, but it still has to be a new fighter in ROTJ. What I’m most curious about now is, is the X-wing that gets destroyed in the final battle of ROTJ with the new Red 5 guy the same ship we see Luke piloting that was left behind for someone else to take into battle?
If so it shouldn’t be in TLJ/TROS if it is since that X-wing gets destroyed unless Luke got yet another X-wing to rename/repaint or somehow magically got his original Enola Gay back post fall of the Empire, but I would assume the Empire would have destroyed her after capturing since she’s such a tasty war prize

Just watch & enjoy the film, but don't think too hard, it's a JJ Movie

This is this guy's 3rd Mustang, painted up exactly like the previous 2 that got shot out from under him:

So there's historical precedence. Maybe Luke did paint all his X-wings to look like his first one.

I’m perfectly happy with this possible explanation. I actually wish it was portrayed ever so slightly better on film because I think it’s actually really neat that Luke’s second X-wing was probably left behind like the Falcon for use in the Death Star II battle and fell in the ensuing assault. It makes perfect sense he would get yet another replacement after returning to the Alliance.
ok I’m done nerding out

It’s still strange as hell that his new one just instantly works after spending some 10 years underwater in the ocean. I can only imagine JJ has never spent any substantial time near the ocean in his life.

Son-of-bitch!!! I finally went to see it...I didn't have really any problems with it. I have avoided this thread, not only to avoid spoilers, but just because I just...don't...care...what...people...think...anymore...

There was a time when I enjoyed talking about Star Wars all day long...Now, I just don't care. And honestly, I really don't even care to discuss it here. These Star Wars threads have become so toxic I just ...don't....*******....care...anymore...

You guys can debate this crap all you want.....Lovers gonna love and Haters gonna hate...***** F-ing ******! There was a time when I loved to talk all things Star Wars related....I could talk about SW all day and night 24/7. Now, I avoid all these threads even remotely related to Star Wars. This Fandom is worse than the current political climate. I'm sorry, but all of you guys are just flyin' f-ing crazy! Myself included.

Yeah, I'm a ****** Star Wars nut. Always have been, always will be. Nobody loves it more than me.. But I'm not going to lie, some of you folks that argue this crap night and day, you need to take some advice from Shatner---"GET A LIFE!"

It's just a ****** movie!!~!

Sorry, just pissed off at the world right now.......

Or like saying that piloting a t16 skyhopper in atmo and blasting womprats is going to make you proficient enough to pilot an X-Wing Starfighter during the hairiest assault the rebellion had yet seen and bullseye a 2 meter exhaust port.

;)

true the x-wing run was a ton of luck. A ton of pilots got killed in the run and Luke honestly did get lucky (and has main character plot armor).

hell, I remember there was one pilot that successfully went through the run but missed with his proton torpedoes. Too bad he doesn’t have the force.

Luke was implied to be a good pilot, wanting to join the imperial academy (would be a really interesting what if he did lol). He had experience with the t16 skyhopper whose controls are similar to the X-wing. Blasting womp rats turned out not to be so useful since he relied on the force to get the shot. And he wasn’t a super pilot that outshone the others in the fight. It was a do or die

Since we are talking about plot holes, there are quite a few in the ST when you take the 3 movies as one story (which we should since it’s a trilogy)

here are the ones that bug me the most:

if Rey is a Palpatine, why did the Skywalker saber call out to her? Why did Obi Wan say these are her first steps? Why are the Jedi putting their faith in a Palpatine in the first place?

The vision in TFA. What was that from? It’s definately not Rey’s past memories since she is a nobody. How does she see Ren and the Knights of Ren?

Why was the first order looking for Luke? Luke is a cranky old man who went into self-imposes exile to die and is a powerful warrior. Why taunt a defeated warrior that could cripple or crush your forces when he is going to die on his own volition and leave you to do what you want?

What was Palpatine’s plan and why did he come back now? It seems he can come back to life, abit in a weakened state. Why didn’t he contact Kylo Ren through Snoke earlier? Why didn’t he send some of his massive fleet to aid the first order (a couple of those Star destroyers and the First Order would have wiped out the alliance by TLJ).

So is the prophecy of the one BS? Anakin was phrophesized to be the one to bring an end to the Sith. RoS basically reveals that not only has Anakin failed to do that (Palps is back), it’s implied he would have never able to do so (Palps can Seem to come back time and time again).
