You and I have different readings on that scene. I see Rey getting angry, knocking Luke down from behind. But he stands up, gets a stick of his own, and blocks an attack. The proceeds to easily dodge Rey's wild attacks. He lands a blow to her back. Thinking he's taken her down a bit, he lowers his weapon. But she just renews the attack. Finally, master Skywalker, showing his superiority and dominance, easily disarms the young woman. But she reaches for the lightsaber. Realizing the fught is getting out of hand, Luke, yields.
Luke falls with his back to the ground and uses the force to slow his fall. He is in a prone position with his opponent standing over him with a weapon ready to strike and he himself has no weapon capable to defend himself. He lost. Rey was also the aggressor and kept Luke on his backfoot.
This fight also follows with Rey choosing to leave rather than continue training under him. She doesn't seem to feel she has anything more to learn from Luke directly which is not something you think when you lose to your master.
meanwhile, Ben doesn’t come close to hitting Luke once. Luke doesn’t even need to block his strikes like he did with Rey. Sure you could say he was emotional but that just means he’s a bad fighter then and doesn’t change the fact that Ben can’t beat Rey in a fight.
Honestly the dyad is a stupid introduction into Star Wars lore added by TLJ imo because it makes training pointless. What incentive is there for Rey to train because no matter what little she does, she will always be equally strong to Ben.
On the other hand, there is a disincentive for Rey to train because the stronger she becomes, the stronger Kylo becomes also. The dyad never made sense to me like why were there no dyads before, what if one dyad dies, etc.
yes, the scene in question showed that in terms of the ability to call on the force, they are equal. However, the next scene has Ben wake up going where is she while Rey has escaped the base and able to shoot down tie fighters in the falcon. In a fight, the last man standing, or the last man still able to move, is the winner. Rey is the winner in this fight too.
And we saw one years ago in Clone Wars. The Father sensed Anakin was supposed to replace him. I wonder if that was a "false read" of the vibration of his not-yet-born grandson through the Force, who would actually replace The Son... or maybe the Daughter...? Or both, from a certain point of view. There has been dyads before. Palpatine said so.

All good questions. I have a feeling they are going to be explored in upcoming content. I wonder if Revan and Bastila will be dyads in the Force.the thing is that wasn’t shown in the movies and raises the question why? Are they incredibly rare? Is it always a dark side and light side entity (not sure light side is even a thing but whatever for now).
If so, we know in the past that there wasn’t many cases of there only being one Jedi and one Sith. The older generations had armies of Jedi vs armies of Sith. If there is a dyad, isn’t it in the best interest for the winning side to not train? If the dyad gets stronger, their counterpart also gets stronger without doing anything and would make the counterpart harder for the average soldier Jedi/Sith to take down.
This may be slightly unrelated since it’s more Lucasfilm specific but how are you guys feeling about Disney purchasing Lucasfilm?
It seems to have been a bad deal for both sides imo.
Lucasfilm arguably has 2 amazing film franchises to capitalize on:
- Star Wars
- Indiana Jones
Star Wars has been kind of split in opinion and Indiana Jones didn’t do so hot in the 4th film. Do you guys think Disney should continue the Indy franchise or soft reboot it?
Only tangentially related, but I got my copy of the visual dictionary for TRoS yesterday. There is a section at the beginning recapping the first two films of the trilogy that adds a bit of new material on them. It specifically brings up Maz Kanata mentioning that she had a story to tell about how she acquired Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber, which makes me wonder if there are indeed specific plans of some sort to tell that story in some future venue. If they just wanted that question to quietly fade away, it would be odd to double-down on it like that at this point. All good questions. So far the best look at the Resistance B-wing comes from this video.Only tangentially related, but I got my copy of the visual dictionary for TRoS yesterday. On another note, I'm a bit disappointed that the book appears not to include any images at all of the new B-wing, though it does mention it in the text -- mostly to say the Resistance is down to only about a half-dozen each of the four "letter" fighters.
SSB
Because video essay creators like MauLer generally break down WHY they didn't like a film based on objective writing issues over the entire films structure which is both interesting and opens up discussion for how to write these things better in future endeavors. Similar to RLM's Episode I Plinket review. But Longman bad sooooo...Saw it a third time last night, still great. Pretty busy for a weeknight showing, several weeks in. Noticed a few things that clear up some of the plot questions I had the first two times. Looking forward to the disc release to notice more.
And it’ll always be odd to me that people who don’t like a movie spend an additional 2 hours of their time listening to someone give a rambling monologue about why they disliked the same movie. If you feel you’ve already wasted two hours of your life, why double it? I liked the movie and there’s no way I would listen to someone prattle on about it for nearly the length of the movie itself.![]()
