Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

I didn't hear him say droid. Just whispered please.

And then there's that whole ""who's on top phasma? Who's on top?" Or whatever it was

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

I actually thought the new characters were the ONLY redeeming part of TFA. I agree though that I'd grab any of the Prequel movies to watch again before seeing TFA again.

apart from the characters, and one or two alien designs, that's because there is nothing NEW about TFA's.

Everyone is in the EXACT Same spot, or worse than they where at the end of episode six.

Nostalgia only goes so far to keep interest. Where is the NEW?

I WANTED to see Luke in a new Jedi temple as the new yoda.

I WANTED to get introduced to a whole new set of young jedi.

I WANTED to see where the Empire was at (sans death star or emperor)..

I wanted to see Han And Lea as part of a big family.

All that never happened.

Instead we got a copy of the yavin base. A copy of the battle room scene. A copy of yoda. Another desert planet that might as well have been tatoooine..

we've seen all that before.

Personally, I think Disney played it TOO safe. just like with Rebels. and I worry they won't venture beyond what sells toys....
What's the point of evolving the story line if we MISSED all the fun parts of the characters evolving?

We don't even really know who controls coruscant here. Empire? rebels? why where neither based there?

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

Lots of TFA hate here suddenly. To be fair, there Is a lot to be critical of as there is plenty to be thankful for.

It's been beaten to death here, but TFA was a reboot of the franchise. I'm expecting E8 to be more original as are most the core audience. I'm optimistic that Disney will mostly deliver.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

I like a lot of Doug's work, it's a pity a lot of the good stuff didn't make it into the films,....Astro, to say you are tired of JJ & RmQ based designs is a real shame & I feel that you may be disappointed with any new Star Wars productions

RMQ & JJ are as essential as John Williams, lightsabers, droids & creatures

There is room for new designs,...but they have to fit into what is 'Star Wars'

J
Don't get me wrong, I love those prototype designs. And all of the artwork that they did. But none of it was the finished product.

But if we are comparing it to John Williams, what he did is the final product.

What if John died tomorrow? And they brought in a new team to continue his work. But rather than using his work as inspiration, they just started going with all of the unused bits that he penned in 1977. As a tribute

This is bothersome for three reasons. The first being that they are shoehorning ideas in place where it wasn't meant to be.

But secondly, they are hiding their own lack of creativity behind work someone already did

And lastly, when I walk into a new star wars movie, I want to have my imagination tickled. I don't want to see the same pictures I saw 20 years ago in a book. And all of the new ships (leia's flying hallway, kylo's jumble of black Lego pieces) were absolute garbage

But as i have said quite a lot of times,.....looking at the concept art of TFA, it's plain to see that designs were there,...but Disney/Lucasfilm/JJ consciously decided to use safer familiar OT designs to guide the audience back in

Its exactly the same as the Prequels,....I think a good lot of concept work of Doug's were amazing......it's a pity that some of them were ditched in favour of what we got

I think now that Star Wars has be re-introduced/rebooted,...there will be creativity

It wasn't laziness,....it was a conscious decision to re tread

Much like this conversation has repeated & repeated

Star Wars in general will be a much better place without a certain element of fandom. Hopefully they will recede into the ether so we can carry on without them.

Oh I agree. The concept art for TFA was amazing. Seeing that picture of rey's at at house is what sold me. But then I saw the final product. Where was that awesome design?

I guess that I'm saying the conscious choice they are making is out of step with me. And I'm far from alone. George Lucas has said it too. South park is devoting an entire season to it.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

you know we are always picking on the new films, but the OT had its own faults too. we never heard anyone complaining about ford's poor line delivers in ANH. " whats in the droid whats so important, whats he carrying" something like that, after they escape the death star and blow up the tie fighters, i cringe every time i hear the line and say to myself. how do they let that slip into the finished film.

empire we get the worst cry from luke once vader tells him who his father is...

then in RoTJ we get chewie doing the tarzan swing....

i still love the OT but its not perfect either, which makes me believe not a single film will be 100% perfect. all we kept hearing about before TFA was make something to redeem the fans. they did, and we still complain. its part of being a fan of star wars

as for Ep1 over TFA. i'll watch TFA over ep1 any day! ford did an amazing job, he made the movie to me. even boyega i think did an amazing job. he doesnt come off jar jar to me. even when he was telling phasma off. it was only that droid please that pulled me out of the film. i think it was probably because of personal reason

i think kennedy and jj did a good job rebooting this franchise. i understand where everyone is coming from saying things are match scene for scene. I just HOPE we get a fresh new start with ep8 which i think we are going to do

and then when its not anything like ESB we can complain that it was nothing like ESB and should have had "this" lol its just a viscous star wars circle!

either way, i love all you guys and love reading all the debates!

It's all apart of internet culture and being a fan in general. anyone who tries to say these fans don't belong, wants to create their own imperfect world.

TFA did alot of things right.
IT brought back the star wars feel.
It brought back props rther than all CG.
It brought back character costumes, that while not as fully realized as CG, makes the world feel more real and right.

But it also did alot of things wrong, too. and whether certain people like it or not, we have a right to moan about it as many times as we want. and people telling us we shouldn't just makes us do it more :).

and those that don't like that aspect of internet culture should really move on from message boards, cause that is what they are at heart ;o)....even if they repeat themselves :).
and Chewie swinging the tarzan yell, while totally fourth wall breaking, gets a laugh out of me every time ;o)

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

I also find myself let down a bit by the TIEs we got in TFA, compared to what we got in the EU, and also given what we see in the concept art. Going back to the basic, original TIE Fighter and a slightly tweaked version of same... Unfortunate. I felt, and still feel, the wings on Kylo's shuttle should fold all the way down to just below horizontal. The fifteen degree sweep they do have is worse than pointless. And I can't stand the landing craft, especially given what the EU and video games had previously given us. Then there's the armor. *sigh* It looks okay enough until one starts to play with building a set. People complain about how the Stormtrooper, Clone Trooper, or Boba Fett's armor weren't designed by people who know armor and how the wearer has to be able to move? The various First Order armors are utterly egregious.

it was only that droid please that pulled me out of the film. i think it was probably because of personal reason

I'm curious how you're hearing that line. From first viewing to most recent, I just hear Finn pleading with a droid whose name he doesn't know. You seem to be hearing it differently.

I don't have a problem with people moaning & I can see their point of view, but when it becomes rhyming,...that is a real pity

To say the thing a couple of times,....yeah sure,.....but to repeat & repeat

I have exactly the same opinion as you Neil,....It's a great film, it does have a few problems,....but I include it in my Star Wars films of 4

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

It's all opinion. Opinion is really the lowest form of intelligence, so I've heard.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

You know that if there were internet message boards widely used in for used in for the original films in the 70s and 80s, I doubt they'd get unanimous praise on them. When you have an internet millions can post on you are going to get a lot of negative opinions on any given movie. Even if polls show 85 to 90 percent of people happy with the movie. That 10 or 15 percent will be vocal.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VIII (Pre-release)

No the lowest form of intelligence is a lack thereof ... Or having some, but not knowing what to do with it.
