Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Yeah seems to be becoming a little bit of drips and drabs of a spoiler thread... I think after the trailer tomorrow I'll be on information lockdown. Can't wait to see this trailer!!!

I went on info lockdown a while back. It's unfortunate some folks can't stop dropping spoilers in this thread - despite the active spoiler thread.

I'm at the crossroads right now.

Either I will watch the next trailer or I won't.

I like the fact that everything we've seen has been from the first third of the film. To watch this next trailer will be to accept spoilers.

I don't consider anything that is released in an official capacity to be a true spoiler, unless you literally don't want to know anything. I figure Lucasfilm/Disney is keeping all the juicy stuff under wraps. Starting about a month ago, I have been avoiding all the rumor websites though. I suspect this trailer will be the last major official nugget we're given, besides perhaps some TV spots.

I think I was officially ruined by trailers with the dark knight rises. It had the best trailer.

And that trailer had details of every action moment for the entire film. There was nothing left of the movie after that.

i too am hoping it shows up online sometime tomorrow... i dont watch ESPN and cant sit threw a football game or baseball game.. heck i dont even know what game is playing at the time of the trailer release? anyone know?
I can't help but wonder whose idea it was to force a bunch of movie fans to sit through a football game just to watch what will probably amount to 20 seconds worth of footage. Are the ratings for Monday Night Football really that bad? :lol

Yeah, other movies and studios are a different matter. Seems like releasing half a dozen trailers that spoil most of the movie is becoming more commonplace.

Well, we're expecting the full trailer so hopefully it will be more than 20 seconds! Actually the clips they've released are 15-16 secs each, so I imagine the trailer will be a good bit more than that.

It's no different than when most studios do trailers during the superbowl.

Disney owns ESPN so they don't have to pay for the advertising spot on their own network.

The only slightly negative opinion I'll voice on the poster is the scale of Starkiller base seems off. The reason the Death Star worked so well on screen was that the superstructure looked legitimate, in that the closer you got to it the more you became aware it was composed of smaller buildings, panels, grid structures ,trenches etc. The issue I have with the SK is that weaponized section of the planet looks altogether wrong, more like a section of a droid photo shopped onto a world. The visibly huge parts used to construct the pieces of it at that scale therefore make it look immediately "fake", which was kind of the problem associated with the original DS concepts. Of course the fact that its on a poster could just be exaggerating this, but its an element that feels very off for me, unlike most of the rest of what we've seen , which hits the button squarely on the head.

The thing that's bugging me her about this poster (and I do love it) is that there's no Luke. And it is the official poster.

Which leads me to think that the masked character of kylo ren is Luke.

Please...if you know the answer to this and it's in the spoiler thread just forget I mentioned it. I don't want to know.

But I like a good conversation.

Let's not forget the Khan debacle.

Cutthumb, I see what you mean. I do think it's meant to be evocative of some of the DS concept art but I guess that's the price you pay.

I think they're simply saving Luke for a big reveal. They know people want to see him. Yoda was not featured on the first TESB poster either. He was kept under wraps as well. The identity of who plays Kylo Ren is no spoiler and has been mentioned quite a bit. He is actually shown unhelmeted in Vanity Fair (I think it was), so it's not a big secret.

Another aspect of the poster that I'm a bit surprised to see not being discussed is Rey and Finn's placement. Rey is placed front and center, implying she is our central character and yet there Finn is off to the side wielding that lightsaber. Normally I would assume whomever wields the lighsaber would be our primary protagonist but I'm not so sure in this case. Maybe it's misdirection...

Also, I notice Max von Sydow is credited dead last which makes me think his presence in the movie is fairly minimal. And no Kenny Baker. He was part of the original casting announcement so I wonder what happened there. I have heard in the past he isn't in the best of health.

Don't forget Darth Maul had a big spot of presence in the marketing and those huge eyes on the poster, but his actual screen time wasn't very long, so it could just be straight up design choices and not necessarily screen time presence.

I'm fine with the evocation in that its another super weapon, I'm just slightly disquieted its a bit of a clumsy execution. There is a reason a lot of concept art doesn't make it to the screen, in that probably a good 80% of it does not look right. Until of course they hit a design that gets scale, construction and story theme linked successfully together. They do seem to be chucking a lot of old concept work up there on the screen but it seems to lack a couple of common sense filters on the way, probably because they are missing people like the old school model makers and artists who might just point out that on a mobile weapons vehicle it makes sense to have put armour platting around your troops or its daft to have single point light sources on a planet that would have to be at least a mile wide to be observed from space like that. When concepts are built at a certain variety of scales its easy to spot immediately whats wrong with a physical model in the "real" world.

I think the three characters being so prominent in the poster show its going to be a fairly balanced story split between them, rather than just one persons hero journey. And the "diminished" appearance of the other original characters are there to say, hey, we are here but this isn't completely our story any more.

Poster is awful photoshoped crap! Even if Drew didn't want to do it couldn't they have used real art by someone else? It lacks composition and is way too busy and heavy handed a lot of the fan art posters are better. As for the film the Deathstar looking super weapon has me worried that the movie is just going to be a retread of the OT with nothing original to offer. I shall set my expectations for the final trailer very low :(

Thanks for sharing your sunny disposition, Debbie Downer.

Guys so far we are judging a lot of things based on toys or poster art. Let's give the SK base a bit of time before we see it on screen. Maybe the trailer will ease your concerns. Personally I'm happy with 95% of what I've seen and heard of this movie so far. Damn this trailer can't come soon enough. ;)

Umm... WHAT????

The tickets were supposed to go on sale AFTER the trailer.
I even watch football and I am pretty pissed about how this cluster-f is going down.

I have to be on the road for over 8 hours today. Was going to be back before they are supposed to go on sale...

Lame.

Booked my tickets too :)
