Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Listen, Star Wars is big in my life and I appreciate everything that George has created. Say what you will, but he's the one who gave us all these great things. This is kind of like when your parents just aren't working together anymore and maybe it's time they just get a divorce and live separate, happier lives. You can still love them both, and it may be hard at first, but maybe it's better for everyone if they just split. That's how I feel about Lucas and Star Wars.

Not sure if this has been posted already or not, but if its not, it appears that this will be the first SW films to not involve any Lucas' ideas: https://www.yahoo.com/movies/george-lucas-had-his-own-ideas-for-star-wars-108740021407.html

I believe I mentioned that many months ago, along with what was likely to be Lucas' opening which was the Falcon cockpit in hyperspace, camera pulls back to reveal a hand reaching for the controls, we come out of hyperspace and reveal pants with a red stripe, then another hand reaches for controls from the opposing side (where Chewie would be seated) yet this is a female hand, camera continues to pull back to reveal a young male and female (brother and sister) with the male saying "I dont know how dad did this in under 12 parsecs"...

I wished Lucas would leave all this kid stuff behind and go back to making American Graffiti type movies.

Myself, I think that George Lucas is a great idea-maker. It is at most other things in film-making that his skills are lacking.

^Yep, this. I have mixed feelings about it. While I have no doubt JJ & Co. are set to deliver a fantastic return to old-school Star Wars, it is a bit sad that not any of it, aside from the concept itself, will have come from George. I'm not sure a complete separation of church and state is what the majority were asking in the dark ages of the prequels, but it seems that is now what we'll be getting. I'm still very much looking forward to it all whatever the case.

But lately his creations are lacking,.....Strange Magic seems to be taking a hammering

,......funny how GL is now using the new Star Wars hype to push his movie

I don't think it's unreasonable to try and help market a product that way. I often see a lot of post complaining about really simple principals of running a business on this forum that often seem to lack a bit of real world perspective. But maybe that's just me.

Neither do I,....its how the world works...:)

....but what tickled me is how he played down TFA trailer a month or so ago or any thing about SW,....but now he's dropping bombshells at press conferences for his movie

Well, the the man did create ILM and Skywalker Sound, so his technical film making pedigree is without comparison.

I think those endeavors are actually great analogies for his filmmaking contributions - he's a talented idea man! Whatever Skywalker Sound and ILM may have achieved, he wasn't the one pushing the buttons. I don't think you can credit him with Ben Burtt or Tom Knoll's technical filmmaking knowledge just because he hired them. The fact that the additions and changes to the special edition from wacky color timing through needlessly extending shots or blowing the audio mix were all micromanaged GL revisions is pretty damning. The closer George's films come to what he wants them to be (in his own words), whether it's bringing old classics more in line with what he'd envisioned or revisiting the world in the prequels with digital tools and a nearly unlimited budget, the more it shows that it was never his taste nor filmmaking that we were all responding to. Damn good idea though, Star Wars...

I don't think he was playing down the teaser, I think he simply had not seen it yet and that was played up in the media as he was somehow disinterested.

George Lucas has always been brilliant when it comes to his ideas or visions so to speak (usually). He gave us 3 amazing films that have cultivated a new generation of Sci-fi and fantasy films, as well as a massive fan following that has even created great people to join together like the 501st. I don't mean to bash Lucas for the prequels or be over joyed a fanboy has taken over, but it was never a matter of his ideas or direction to me. It was his film making. As technology grew he used it, but not to its potential or misused it thinking more meant better. Visionary, yes. Film maker, not so much. IMO.

I would suggest technology didn't grow, he forcibly created and drove technological advancements in film making. He was at the point of that spear.

Yeah I think most people who hate on JJ are just jealous. He's making sure this movie is done right. He's a great guy who knows what needs to be done.People hate on JJTrek because it wasn't like the original Trek but it wasn't meant to be from the get go. It was meant to be fresh and new and feel different. A total reboot and I my mind he succeeded. Awakens is meant to be a continuation of the OT and meant to have that old familiar feel and continue the story. I'm sure he's going to succeed at that too. :)

Um. I don't know JJ Abrams - I imagine he's a great guy, but he might kick his dog every morning. I liked JJ's Trek for what it was... but, it wasn't a "total reboot" and I can understand and appreciate why people didn't like it (because it was big, flashy, very non-Trek in tone/feel and had really big issues).

The truth is we don't know if JJ is "making sure this movie is done right." We've heard rumors and we have gut feelings. I grew up with Star Wars being a huge part of my life and I have some very strong concerns about - I think those concerns are warranted.

Am I jealous? Sure - the guy's getting to do some amazing things. But, I'd be jealous of anyone playing in that universe... I don't think jealously has anything to do with anyone being concerned about this movie and the movies that follow - that's just silly.
