Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I am definitely not on the inside...

Fascinating. I kind of figured it was something along those lines, but now that you've explained it it makes a ton more sense. Now that I think about it, there's no skin off my nose for them going a bit more remote in their search, because otherwise they won't find any "new" talent (something that I am convinced is absolutely critical to these movies). Like you said, the big hubs are just oversaturated.
But that being said, avoiding NY and LA altogether seems a bit harsh. Not all of us have had our big break yet... :cool

Oh I DEFINITELY know they will be doing castings there, just not open (cattle call) castings like these. For NY and LA they'll just probably see people who have representation in place, whereas with these open calls they don't expect you to have representation (be signed with an agency) or have union status (SAG/SAG-e).

Some info on why JJ switch writers

J.J. Abrams explains the Star Wars: Episode VII writer switcheroo

People have been wondering why J.J. Abrams took the Episode VII screenwriting duties from Toy Story 3's Michael Arndt. According to Abrams, there's no insidious conspiracy and Arndt wasn't doing a bad job (at least that they're admitting to) — it's all about the scheduling.

You'll recall we told you that Disney wanted Star Wars: Episode VII to come out in 2015 no matter what, and therein lies the problem — Arndt apparently wasn't going to hit the very quick deadline. As Abrams explained at a conference call:

It became clear that given the time frame and given the process and the way the thing was going that working with Larry in this way was going to get us where we need to be and when we needed to be. Working with Larry Kasdan, especially on a Star Wars movie is kind of unbeatable. ...

Working with Michael was a wonderful experience and I couldn’t be a bigger fan of his or adore him more, He’s a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process. [This event] doesn’t preclude working with Michael again in the future, he is one of the best writers around.
Of course, this doesn't preclude the possibility that Arndt work was terrible or something, but again, given that Abrams is going to be in a terrifying rush to get the movie finished by 2015, and Kasdan has had more Star Wars screenwriting experience than everybody besides George Lucas, this does make a lot of sense. And I also can see Arndt not wanting to churn out a rush job just for Disney CEO Bob Iger's Excel spreadsheets.

Still, the biggest problem remains: Can Abrams make this movie in a little over a year and a half, and still make it good? We aren't going to have to wait that long to find out.

I just want the old school, practical effects feel of the old trilogy. Don't make it for 5-year olds, leave the Jar Jar at home with the lens flares. We'll give your version a shot.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My girlfriend and I went to the St. Louis one yesterday. We got there at about 10:00, and it was scheduled to begin at 12:00. We went in, she used the restroom, and then I asked where it was being held. The guy said the 13th floor of the hotel, so we got on the elevator to go up. A janitor looking guy (who was holding a thing of tape) stopped us and said to go outside and wait in a line. This line was about 15 people long. We stood in it for around 10 minutes, then a man told us we could go upstairs. After the elevator ride, we walked down a small hallway and entered one of the banquet rooms, which held about 300 people in it. We sat in the nearest section to the door, and played games/harrassed the meeker people around us.

At around 11:00 the main casting lady called for everyones' attention, and stated who she was, and that it was indeed a casting call for Star Wars Episode VII, as it had leaked out before they could get a handle on it. She also said how it wasn't necessary to get there super early or camp out as some had done. She then talked about a few main people in the production, including JJ Abrams. She then said she would begin seeing us as we walked by her table. We could chat briefly, and hand her any resumes we had (we both had one). She then said we would begin with the group of chairs we were sitting in, so my girlfriend and I were about 40th in line.

We both approached the table within about 10 minutes or so after the main announcment, and talked to her very briefly. They looked at us overall, and in our eyes, etc. I don't know what she told my girlfriend, but she told me I kept very busy as she looked at my resume and picture, and she looked forward to looking at it more. The whole thing for me lasted less than a minute. When we left, they had formed a line outside of the holding room, which contained about 300 people. So we walked down it for our own amusement to see what the people looked like (which none caught my eye). When we left, we took the interstate that overlooks the hotel, and another 200-300 people were waiting outside the buidling.

I found out today they called back 30 people out of the aprox. 1300+ that came out. I didn' get a call, and neither did my girlfriend, but we had a really good time either way!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

So we're already rushing things into oblivion to meet Disney's unrealistic deadlines.

Yeah, things are off to a good start.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It may appear to be a rush on the surface, but sounds like plans for this was in development for a long time and with how much we know it may only look like a rush in light of when we first heard of the announcement vs. when they knew it was taking place.

The many millions Disney will spend to get extra hands on deck will make for lighter work. If anyone can pull it through with resources, it's Disney.
