Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I dunno, I'd happily pay for a ticket to an episode of Star Wars directed by Tarantino haha! We could call is Star Warped-sense-of-humour.

Tarantino? And get to see the opening crawl half way through the film? No thanks :lol

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Plus, I think Tarantino's first day on the job would involve firing John Williams, because he doesn't want to surrender control of his film to any movie stealing composer!

Actually on that note (Ha! "note") I was hoping that Abrams would bring in Michael Giacchino to take on the score. As much as I love John Williams' older scores, I was eager to have someone else take over and take the music in a new direction, with nods to the classic overtures.

Blasphemy!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I just think it'd be good to bring in a new composer! I think Giacchino is a fantastic composer and seeing as he's the Bad Robot go to guy, he seemed like a sure thing.

The score to Trek '09 speaks otherwise of him. It as an uninspired, repetitive turd of a score, in my opinion.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I concur. I certainly think J.J. is more "right" for Star Wars than directors like Quentin Tarantino or Micheal Bay, whose styles most definitely wouldn't be a good fit.

Agreed. Either of these guys would be a disaster.

+1. If John Williams is willing and available to score a Star Wars movie (or any movie for that matter), you get John Williams. That's like settling for Joe's Crab Shack to cater your wedding when you can get Rachel Rae for the same price. (Not that this would happen, but you get what i mean)

I'm wondering what saber Luke will have in the movie. Will we get the hero version or the V2 or something new?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I agree on getting someone besides Williams. Not Giachinno, but someone else. While still an incredibly talented composer, I think Williams lacks the original touch that he did when scoring the OT. The prequels had moments that were really fantastic, but in the overall scope of most of the music (dialogue scenes, for example) the music is really quite bland and...well, uninspired. Of the three prequels the only one I actually listen to is ROTS, and even then there's plenty of tracks I will skip over.
When I watched Kingdom of the Crystal Skull though, that's when I started to think Williams was losing his grip. Pretty much all of that soundtrack sounded like an over-cued Looney Toons cartoon. It was embarassing. And the parts that didn't? Well...they were cues from the previous movies. I know what you're thinking...but Lutso, the movie was bad, so therefore he COULDN'T make a good score from it. Really? I don't think that's how it works.

I say give someone else a shot at it. There are so many talented composers out there who are following in John Williams' footsteps and looking up to him as a role model, and they'll never get a chance for recognition.

To me this doesn't seem like any different of an issue than wanting Han Solo in the new movies. Why? Just so we can say "oh, he was in the original films, cool!" That's pointless. There needs to be a balance met between making these films in the "spirit" of the originals, while being new and original at the same time. Otherwise we're just cloning. And we all know how badly anything to do with Clones goes...

The guy that did the soundtrack for SW:TOR comes to mind, whoever he is. As terrible as that game was, he did an outstanding work in that department (that ties in to my point above too). That music sounded more like Star Wars than most of the prequel soundtracks did. IMO. Check it out:

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Bear McCreary, love his work . Give it to him.

Reel

Yeah, I've enjoyed his stuff a great deal. Although the thing about TV guys is that they're great at setting a mood, but not necessarily creating a moment that you remember purely based on music.

Like, if you heard a given piece of music from Galactica, would you be able to recall that it was the piece they used when they did the air-jump with the ship? You might get that "Oh, that's totally a bit from Galactica" but you wouldn't necessarily be able to tie it to a given specific moment.

For me, Williams' stuff -- his earlier stuff anyway -- is absolutely like that. The Star Wars soundtracks and Indy soundtracks, all those moments are etched into my mind to the point where I can just hear the music and recreate the scene in my mind verbatim.

I've not seen any music from Giachinno or McCreary that I could do the same with.

Some of that may be more due to teh format in which they work, where you have such a volume of material that you don't get to do things like play with themes. But at least with Giachinno, the ST09 theme that he did reuse was just...awful. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me, honestly. McCreary I haven't seen him work in a single story taht's long-form enough.

All that said, though, I find myself enjoying television stories far more than films these days, if only because they seem capable of telling a richer, fuller tale. Within that setting, McCreary is dynamite.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Star Wars Underworld is reporting release date is going to be "late 2015" as per a tweet from sone LucasFilm employee in Holland. If true potentially ex-employee...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Wasn't ANH originally intended for a December release? Maybe its a good omen.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It's near the end of 2013 and they haven't even finished casting?!

I find it...rather hard to believe this will be out in 2015, at least not in May, 2015.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Actually, I think they are pretty deep into all aspects of production. If you read the press release from LucasFilm regarding JJ and Kasdan taking over screenwriting and all the other people named, it seems clear a lot is happening. I bet most major casting is done, they are just waiting to make those announcements.
