Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah, I almost wonder if we've actually had a canon account of where star destroyers come from under our noses the whole time. I know the EU has them being made by Kuat Drive Yards. Were star destroyers known as such during the production of ANH? I know they aren't mentioned by name in the films until TESB.

What's also funny is that neither star destroyers nor any of the other large ships in the movies are ever depicted as being terribly fast. Seems like boasting you can outrun one isn't that much of a claim! lol

One of the SW reference books, I think Essential Guide to Warfare, kind of retconned that Solo dialogue. It said that Star Destroyers are built at various shipyards under license from KDY and that the ships that come out of the Corellian shipyards are known to be faster. I guess the Corellians are supposed to be extremely good starship engineers. I don't know if there's any physical way to differentiate between a Corellian SD and any other SD other than if it's harder to get away from.

The Star Destroyer chasing the Falcon in ESB was pretty fast. The Falcon is as fast as some starfighters and it was just barely ahead of the Star Destroyer.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

you guys are going on about tractor beams and such are overlooking the fact Han got caught in the Death Stars tractor beam and all he did was reverse thrusters. Kind of rules out that debate when all he did was put it in reverse.

That or Solo's just full of it. :)

Terribly hard to believe, isn't it? I think this is the best explanation.

Well, in ANH anyway. He was a loudmouth blind-luck bigshot who would BS his way into whatever pile of money he could. Not the goody two-shoes as he was portrayed in ROTJ.

New Video From Star Wars 1313 Teases the Future of Big Screen VFX | Superhero Hype
Impressive.
Most impressive.

That looks better than the clone troopers in the prequels. They look so unreal that it takes me right out of the movie every time I see them.

Of course it is a video recording of a monitor displaying the effects, and I am viewing it on my computer monitor at home. Will have to see it on a 60" HDTV.

Looks really cool, and fun though. Amazing how the facial expressions change.

There is probably some truth to his story. He is giving them a sales pitch. Lots of people embellish during monetary negotiations. Think of the creative writing on the average resume.

And don't forget the clone trooper were done with emerging tech in 1999-2004 and 1313 is done with substantially refined and update tech done 10 years or more after the fact, with technology 10 years further down the pipeline. Using Moore's law that 2^5 or 6 more computer power alone.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I always liked the term Imperial Cruiser better. Just makes more sense, these things don't destroy stars! Not even the Death Star could do that, but I understand the idea of menacing sounding name.

I once saw a site that went into all sorts of details about Star Destroyers and other Imperial ships try to suggest that the Star Destroyer isn't about implying that it's a destroyer of stars but that Star is the class name and Destroyer is the class type, in other words they're the Star class destroyer. Personally, I think that the idea of Star Destroyer being a destroyer pretty ridiculous, Star Destroyers are ridiculously oversized and overpowered for a destroyer. But then again, if a ship like the Nebulon B could classified as a frigate then I guess it wouldn't be too much to call a Star Destroyer a destroyer.

RiceBall is right, it's not about destroying stars, it's about a destroyer-class Starship. On earth we have Destroyers, they are merely smaller, faster, more heavily armed vessels often used to escort a carrier or other important ship - just like the relationship between the SD's and the Executor.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

On earth we call Naval Battleships 'Destroyers' in Star Wars the battleships fly around the stars...so they are called Star Destroyers

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

What's more scary, Imperial Cruiser or Star Destroyer? I'd rather be visited by the Imperial Cruiser personally... :lol

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah, I've always considered the usage of "destroyer" in SW to be a naval term rather than something literally referring to destroying stars! lol!

However, I do think the usage of "destroyer" (and "cruiser" for that matter) to be a little odd in SW, since real destroyers and cruisers tend to be smaller, fast navy vessels and Star Destroyers hardly seem to fit that bill. Perhaps Star Destroyers are indeed smaller and "destroyer-like" when compared to other larger, more heavily armed Imperial ship types (Star Battleships?) that we inexplicably never saw for some reason? The only wrench in that idea is that the only possible example of one of these larger ships in the movies, Darth Vader's massive flagship, Executor, is clearly also referred to as a destroyer several times, which makes even less sense. Yes, I know the EU has reclassified it as a "star dreadnought" but as far as I'm concerned, the movies trump EU explanations.

Oh, it was referred to as a "Super Star Destroyer" for many, many years. Probably about the most unoriginal (and nonsensical) title imaginable.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Haha! I remember that well and in fact I still call it that, though it is pretty stupid. Admiral Ackbar refers to it as that ("Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer!"), so that's where that nomenclature comes from. Sometimes I wonder if that term was taken a little too literally by fans and Admiral Ackbar, perhaps ignorant of the correct Imperial terminology for it or perhaps using informal Rebel jargon for it, just called it a "super star destroyer" simply because it was bigger than the others. I mean, if he had called it a "big star destroyer", does that mean fans would've assumed that it was a Big-class Star Destroyer? LOL!
