Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Agreed. Frankly, I'm not that interested at all in these spin-offs, particularly if they're origins stories.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Well, I suppose I should've noted that it's never explained in the movie. I guess it's no surprise the EU has some story concocted to explain it. lol!

I know, it's not established at all. They do use the terminology "slowly digested" which I guess could be them establishing it, but it's super vague. It's definitely one of those moments where you are just forced to take everything on faith.

To be frank though, that's something that I really LIKED about the OT - the fact that almost all of the conversations jumped into detail without explaining things. It made the universe feel real, and it made it seem more extensive then what was on the camera. That's why I think the EU is such a great idea. Every time during the movie that you have a moment where you think, "man, I'd like to know more about _____", you know there's information out there somewhere about it. I just think that's fun, myself.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My wife said exactly the same thing! She only had a bone spur filed down on her knee cap and she swore she'd live with it (as they tend to sometimes come back) and never put herself through that hell again! :lol

My knees got really swollen and I could clearly hear liquid inside my knees ripple :wacko

My fear is that all these origin movies will ruin the characters. I don't want every little thing explained to me. I want a little mystery.

You don't have to watch them ;)

Exactly my thoughts as well, it's my main concern about the endless continuation of Star Wars films on a yearly basis. Even the Bond films have a decent interval between them.

Part of the magic behind so many Star Wars characters lies in their mystery and otherworldliness, they can feel familiar in some ways, but we don't really know much about where they come from. There's part of us that really wants to know about them, but that desire's created by the appeal of the character.

It's just like a magic trick, the better the trick the more you want to know how it's done... until you do know, and then in a lot of cases discovering the secret is a bit disappointing.

EW!!!!! :sick :lol

exactly how I feel... they can just make the Star Wars Origins movies just for me then! :lol

I don't think a stand alone Han Solo movie showing some of his early adventures or how he and Chewie got to be BFF or how the Kessel Run went down will "ruin the character". the character is still intact and has been for over 30 years. (other than what they did to the character of Han in RoftJedi!) If cast perfectly it could be a lot of fun... of course any stand alone movie on Han doesnt' have to be about any adventure mentioned in the OT... it could be any adventure and I will be thrilled! especially if they run into imperial Stormtroopers! Who the hell wouldn't want to see that??? :p

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

what if the opening is the Millennium Falcon doing the Kessel Run in under 12 Parsec's, where we are introduced to a character similar to Han Solo, yet he is young, sporting the same gunbelt and blaster, smuggling goods... except this character is running on a hair trigger and has unknowingly been doing runs for the remnants of the Empire via the crime lords.

not that interested? :lol! ya right. you'll be interested and in line I'm sure...

...and yet I am more interested in the spin offs than ep 7, 8 and 9. For me the skywalker story has been told and has come to its conclusion. the spinoffs could be nice fresh stories... from a certain point of view! That being said I will be in line for any and all new star wars movies no matter what. The nice thing is One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi so there is some "pedigree" there if you get my meaning. and if rumors are true then get used to the Origins movies because that seems to be what they want to do.
Many feel this Origins type of thing is uninspired but case in point: Return of the Jedi. Plot: A second Death Star. :facepalm Now that was uninspired!

Disney CFO Jay Rasulo revealed that the spin-offs will be "origin movies."

Return of the Jedi already did that. Han Solo was pretty much a parody of himself. Other than the confrontation between Luke, Vader and the Emperor the movie was a slapstick cartoon. all the characters including the droids got snagged up in the net sling booby trap but artoo uses his circular saw ???) and cuts one rope and they all fall... then the ewoks tied the heroes to large tree trunks and carried them to the village to cook them over an open fire? Sounds like a story better suited for Gilligan's Island... (and how much does an 8 foot wookie weigh tied to a tree trunk? :lol ) then Han tried to blow the ewok torch out with his breath? I half expected Harrison to look at the camera and wink like one of those Bob Hope "Road to" movies. Leia was weak and nothing like her spunky character in New Hope and ESB.... Luke's character seemed like it was written for Errol Flynn and threepio was just as dumb as Jar Jar ended up being for the prequels.
I was 16 and I remember groaning and wincing at so many scenes in RotJ and felt like it had turned into a Golden Books version of Star Wars. It was no longer a war movie. Star Wars and ESB were for the most part serious war movies but RoftJ was an episode of F-Troop or Hogan's Heroes. (and don't get me started on the entire legion of my best troops awaits them garbage! :lol )

So far Kennedy and staff have already said they are going for the look and feel of the original trilogy and Star Wars and ESB in particular as a basis for what made star wars great and cull that into the next films.... I certainly hope so but I hope they skip Episdode VI: Return of the Muppets. IMO for the most part Return of the Jedi sucked... .probably as much as the prequels. (let the hatred towards me begin! It gives you focus! :D )

I don't disagree that ROTJ had some of the worst stuff in the series. The problem is that the movie can't be simply ignored, because it also has some of the BEST stuff in it as well.

Nah, time will tell but you assume an awfully lot. The Skywalker story is not concluded so at this point, I'm far more interested in the Episodes than I am with any origins spin-off, which seem like no more than an unnecessary aside to me. If they absolutely have to do spin-offs, I'd rather see them be about little known or new characters. Maybe they will be? Of what's been rumored, about the only origins spin-off that might be palatable would be a Han Solo origins story and even then, I'd prefer his history remain hazy and mysterious. I also find it unlikely they'd ever be able to cast anyone that I'd buy as a younger Han Solo, which is always an issue when you try to cast someone as a younger version of someone else. George Lucas has already ruined Boba Fett's early origins in my book and Obi-wan, Yoda, and Palpatine should be firmly left alone in my opinion. One might could even argue that Obi-wan's origins have already been explored "enough", thanks to Ep. I, unless we want to see child Obi-wan going on some corny adventure. I was glad that, in a rare show of restraint, George didn't decide to delve into Yoda's past in the Prequels. He probably could have, fairly easily.

About the only thing that intrigues me about these spin-offs is the fact that Kasdan is involved. That is a great thing in my book. Maybe he'll change my mind, but otherwise I'm very apathetic toward the idea of origins spin-offs.

yup, like I said, the confrontation between Luke, Vader and Palpy.. but the rest was just drivel. I don't ignore it as it is the final chapter that wraps up the story but it certainly could have been better written and more gripping. at times it borderlined upon campiness.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

This is the only thing that has me excited about any of this. I always felt like there was SO MUCH of the Star Wars universe that the fans love what could have been explored on film. Smugglers, bounty hunters, agents and soldiers for the Republic/Rebellion/Empire. The Jedi/Sith can turn the tide of a war, but they don't fight it all alone.

I'd love to see a plucky crew of bounty hunters/smugglers a la Firefly/Cowboy Bebop. Truthfully, anything besides more lightsabers would be a refreshing change of pace.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

fair enough but pretty much anything after RotJ will just be redundant. Luke rebuilds the Jedi order... Han and leia have kids, A new enemy or Jedi gone Sith ... blah, blah, blah... If it is captured by the Nazis the armies of darkness will march all over the face of the Earth... oh, wait, wrong movie :lol
but if they get real with it then I want to see that Han and Leia never really got together and had kids or they had kids but got divorced... just kind of predictable and expected really... perhaps I can see Luke got married and had kids, ... he was about family so he'd be the one to alter the Jedi way to include a family life and love for such.
Little known and new characters would be great of course for the spin offs ... original content is desirable of course. But being a Han Solo fan and there is so much history and action adventure there I'm all for it.. but like already said, it has to be perfectly cast to work.

If we take GL's influence of World War II then I can see perhaps its allies that turn on the new republic much like how the USSR was an ally during the War but with their own agenda... enemy from within kind of thing ... The Mon Calamari turn on them! :lol ITS A TRAP! Just kidding, I don't want to see the lobster people in any future movies either. I'm sure 7, 8 and 9 will be great and fun and there will be some nice plot surprises for us... but I do feel the origins spinoffs will be of interest. Han is a rich character with lots of back story and I personally don't see the need to keep it secret and mystserious. lets see him in a fight and running from imperial cruisers blasting his way out! :D

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Thought this was as good a place as any to put this. Not sure it is worthy of its own topic, lol.

Having a ton of fun with this Death Star mold while Im waiting on Episode VII.

I like it so much, I think I will get the Han Solo in carbonite one next.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I have all those silicone trays. The Death Star cube is great for Scotch.

Thats exactly why I got it. I've made two so far, and both are kinda cloudy and have a few cracks. I read that boiling the water first clears it up a lot. I dont feel like going to the store just for mineral water right now, lol.

It also helps if you don't fill it up all the way. I fill mine until it comes out of the top then dump a little bit out. It also helps to get it out sooner rather than later. The long it's in there the cloudier it gets.

It totally combines my childhood with adulthood. Death Star + Scotch= happy inner child and adult

The idea of allies of convenience, like my idea of there being different factions in the Alliance for the Rebel Alliance series, would be great to see with nice historical overtones but not something, sadly, we're likely to see. I'm not sure that Hollywood/Disney has the balls and the historical knowledge to pull off something like that, I just don't see that sort of sophistication coming from most screenwriters, esp. not Lindeloff nor does it seem like something that would interest JJ.

The Mon Cal would be an interesting race to feature as a Soviet analogue, once that few people would see coming, but I'm not sure they'd be the right race for it. Granted that we never see much of them, except for Ackbar, but I didn't get any sort of antagonistic vibe from them. While I'm generally pretty dismissive of the EU, like most here, I think one race that would work would be the Bothans who have already been portrayed in the EU as being a bit bristley and like to make a big deal of their getting the plans for the Death Star 2 to the Alliance. Since we never get to see a Bothan on screen, much less hear anything about them outside of the one line, they'd be perfect since the name would be familiar to most fans without any onscreen baggage to influence people's perception about their suitability as a Soviet analogue.

Perfect example of this: Darth Vader. Remember when most people thought Vader was one of the best villains ever created for the silver screen? Then the Prequel Trilogy came along and we found out he was really not much more than a whiny lovesick brat who was pretty handy when things got rough. :facepalm

Be careful what you wish for; you might get it.
