Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) is developing a Star Wars samurai movie for Lucasfilm!

Just something I read. Sorry if it has been posted already.

"Here's some awesomely surprising news for you! A rumor just hit the internet that director Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) is developing a Star Wars samurai movie for Lucasfilm! How freakin' cool is that?! Even though we're all anticipating Star Wars: Episode VII, some of you may forget that Lucasfilm and Disney are also developing other Star Wars properties.
The movie that Snyder is working on is set in the same Star Wars universe that we all know and love. Vulture reports that the untitled Jedi epic will loosely be based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic film, Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding Jedi knights and their badass lightsabers described in the film as… "an elegant weapon, for a more civilized age."
The movie will most likely be a stand-alone film, and not part of the future episodes that will continue the story of the original saga. An inside says that the film is set sometime after the events in Episode VI, and that Snyder would start production on it after Disney starts on its planned 2015 release of Star Wars: Episode VII.
It actually makes sense that this kind of Seven Samurai Star Wars film would eventually be made. George Lucas himself is a huge fan of it, and said back in 2005 that "it’s a brilliant, brilliant film, and every time I see it I can't believe the magic mixture of a great story and great acting and humour and action and suspense — wonderful cinema. The art of moving pictures is on every frame of this movie." It were these kinds of films that helped inspire him to make Star Wars in the first place.
The film tells the story of a small town in seventeenth-century Japan "that’s routinely pillaged by bandits. Fed up with the annual shakedown, its farmers retain the services of seven masterless samurai to defend their harvest."
One again my excitement for the possibilities of what this could end up being is through the roof! What's funny, is that just yesterday we posted some cool custom made Star Wars Samurai Munny's. There's actually been a lot of Star Wars samurai mash-ups that have been made over the years.
I know Snyder will do an amazing job bringing this film to life visually, but I'd like for someone else to write the script. After Sucker Punch, I never want to see Snyder write another script again. What do you think of him taking on this Star Wars samurai film?!
In case you've heard this rumor that this story is not true here's a comments from the source....
Vulture takes the accuracy of its reports very seriously. And while a piece published in The Hollywood Reporter this evening quotes Snyder's rep as saying that the director "is not involved in any way with the newStar Wars," Vulture stands by its story. This reporter heard through a source very familiar with the situation that Snyder recently flew up to Marin County to meet with Lucasfilm execs about the project. When subsequently reached by Vulture, Snyder's spokesperson would only repeat that he "is" not currently involved. One should note the possible political ramifications here of our original story break: Snyder's last Warner Bros. film, Sucker Punch, lost millions for the studio, and execs there could have become distressed at the idea of him getting involved with another studio's franchise when they have so much at stake with their upcoming Man of Steel and want him available for an immediate sequel."

Any other links...and when you say Samurai, do you mean Jedi?

Sounds like the Seven Samurai (Magnificant Seven) remake with Jedi. But thats all I saw.

I didn't make up the Title. I just cut and pasted. But, I do think it would make for a good story. Thank for the update Aeonpulse.

Wasn't STAR WARS the Star Wars movie inspired by Seven Samurai? :wacko

I didn't say you did. I was commenting on the dozens of articles reporting this yesterday morning, that were all calling it a "Star Wars samurai" movie. The Magnificent Seven was inspired by Seven Samurai, but we don't refer to that as a "cowboy samurai" film.

I do agree though, sounds like it would have been an awesome project. Maybe Zack is just bluffing?

Hah, I thought the same thing. I suppose this project was intended to "borrow" a lot more story elements from Seven Samurai than Star Wars did.

...Jedi to wear scaly rubber-like outfits, lightsabers without hilts.

No, but it was inspired by and loosely based on another Kurosawa film, The Hidden Fortress.

Huh? Rubber-like outfits, no hilts? A Samurai sword had a hilt called a Tsuba. Is that what you meant? Also, Jedi in the Old Republic wore armor.

I refuse to see it unless there's a giant, green bunny.

Always remember, Star Wars is like Star Trek except that it's for men.

****** almighty, where's that thread about how the classics shouldn't be raped etc etc?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

There was a Jedi fan film based on Seven Samurai, so that's likely where the rumor came from. A quick google or youtube search should yield results.

Jme3,

I was lucky enough to meet Ian MacDiarmid at NY ComicCon last year. Knowing that it was his only second convention, I asked him what his impression of them was. He told me it was great to meet the people who made the films famous. WOW! When I go the conventions, my whole thing is meeting celebrities and collecting autographs, so I don't get star struck. Excited, yes. Star struck, no. But the humility of that response really impressed me. Plus he was joking around with me when we got our picture together. Plus I've been very fortunate that everyone I've met has been great.

Over the years I have heard better things from the SW troupe than from other actors/actresses that haven't been as friendly. I've seen Ian only in interviews and so forth and he does come across as modest and soft-spoken. Nothing like some of the arrogance and attention-hogging behavior that comes from elsewhere. Hopefully one day I'll get the chance to see him before he decides to go into retirement and/or hiding; the first thing I'd do is ask him if he'd do a recording on my answering machine! To which, I'm sure, he'd say "no" due to contract issues! :lol

Thank god this is false, it sounds effing awful.

Re: Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) is developing a Star Wars samurai movie for Lucasfilm!

This has been explored in the Episode VII thread.

Short answer: it's all bogus rumor.

Re: Zack Snyder (Man of Steel) is developing a Star Wars samurai movie for Lucasfilm!

We've already covered that.

Oh good. Now we have a Star Wars thread to match the "GHOSTBUSTERS 3 HAS BEEN GREENLIT!!" thread. :lol
