Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Just because a director never watched the original don't mean it's gonna be a bad movie.
Nicholas Meyer had not watched startrek before he made Wrath of Khan. He just wanted to make a Hornblower movie in space.

This is a great example but one thing that sets Nicholas Meyer apart is that when he got the job, he demanded every episode of Trek to watch at home, and did. This why he so masterfully distilled many of the relationships present in TOS. He wasn't out to make a Hornblower film in space, but rather related familiar storytelling to something he wanted to make great.

That's what new SW needs. Even if you're not a fan you have to immerse yourself in the material to understand what kind of film it will be.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I liked the PT with a few exceptions, one of which was the acting aside from Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid in TPM (IK Ian McDiarmid was in all 3, but he sucked as Palpatine though he was fine as Sidious)

^ The part in Episode III when Palpatine's voice changed and yelled 'No- No- NO' was probably the most ridiculous part in the whole trilogy!

I'm gonna have to cut Ian some slack as I feel (all of this is only opinion, right? :confused) that he and his acting were about the most redemptive aspects of the prequels. If I had to mention something as being "least favorite" about Ian's role(s), it would be the prosthetics used to make him the Emperor. I'll have to qualify the disliking by admitting that this took place a good twenty or so years prior to Jedi, so the new look was "fresh", and not necessarily meant to fully reflect the Emperor of Jedi. In all likelihood, there probably was the effort on the part of the prosthetician (is that a word?) to make him identical to the Jedi look (as said prosthetician admitted it was his dream job to transform Ian into the Emperor) but the effort just fell short of the vision. As far as the acting of the part of the Emperor, I think again that would have been GL to whatever degree, trying to bring about the "faster, more intense" thing he so loved in the prequels. Be all that as it may, Ian IS the Emperor, and his performance of him in Jedi was sublime; just the right nod, just the right inflection, just the right hint of being the consummate, evil puppetmaster. I think his part just at the end of Ep. III where he's telling the newly decanted Vader that he's killed Padme himself, that was akin to "ROTJ Emperor" acting, so he clearly hadn't lost it...

I saw that in the theatre and everyone busted out laughing!

I'd definitely agree, seelsa- Lucas wasn't doing the actors any favors

I have to agree with this, even more so for me was the sabre fight just before, and the close ups of the facial expressions.

Blame the director. I certainly do.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah that part was pretty cringe worthy. I laughed when I first saw it. But the part when the Jedi confront him at first and he snarls "it's treason then" and then he launches at them, that was good. It is also my favorite part in the preview trailer. Its a Pitty all that changed a few seconds later when all but Windu just stood there to be slashed down by him. Made me laugh.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Ok, as far as I know episode 7 doesn't have a director yet. So can somebody please clarify to me where all these quotes from some director who doesn't like star wars are coming from?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Star Trek in comparison to Star Wars is a niche, culty interest. Abrams wanted to break it out of the box it was in and fill up seats.

SW is a very different affair, it's not going to be hard to find a director with a passion for the material. IIRC, they said in the kennendy/lucas interviews that a love for the series is part of their shopping list of requirements for those working on the new movies.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

About as reliable as the rest of the speculation in which we've engaged in this thread as fans, really. Nobody knows except the people who actually know.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah. The Jedi Academy is formed on Yavin in the second trilogy of books after the Zahn ones. It shows up in Jedi Academy (natch) which was the sequel to Jedi Outcast (which was the sequel to Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, and Dark Forces 1).

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Sick of rumors. They are publicized speculation, nothing solid, and a waste of time.

Give me some official news from the studios, news people!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Am I too late to point out that KK said pre-production starts this spring, and we may get our first real piece of news in January? I'm assuming announcement of a director.

By the by...isn't it amazing how, based on nothing more than "we're doing another SW film" we can fill up 50 pages? I mean really, there's been NOTHING more than "it's coming" to talk about for the last couple of months. Crazy!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Maybe Disney is taken the fan-speculation in consideration this time, you'll never know untill the first teaser comes out.

The first teaser for The Phantom Menace came out in November '98 (if I remember correctly), that's still almost two years if they stick to a pattern (November 2014).

I kind of hope they went for the NJO order, but wasn't that already a no-go?

Eeeeeeeeehhh, I really hope not. With our luck, Disney will be listening to the wrong fans.

I'd rather the stories be placed in the capable hands of professional (and talented) writers. I really don't want a big mish-mash of different ideas, in an attempt to appeal to and appease everyone.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I have a feeling we aren't going to get any solid clues as to the plot until probably early 2014. Maybe late 2013 at the earliest. Until then it's all rumors and speculation that probably have no validity as the script isn't even done yet.

The prequels were a very different experience than were the OT. Back in the stone age when the originals were being produced, there was virtually nothing released to give anyone insight into what to expect, at least there wasn't from where I was. The internet age changed all that dramatically with the prequels, with all sorts of production updates made available, primarily on SW.com, on a regular basis. What with the officially released, behind the scenes photos and videos, one hardly went into the theater not knowing pretty much what was going to happen from scene to scene. In a way, it's disappointing that so much info has been available, for those of us with a weak constitution found it hard not to abstain from availing ourselves of the info when we'd really rather it have been more of a surprise on opening day. I'd much rather go into these sequels with a lot less exposure to what's going to happen than I did with the prequels. Certainly, no one ever put a gun to my head and made me spoil so much of the movies for myself, but it's sort of like an addict being left in a room with his vice; what can be expected? :unsure
