Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

If you are going to destroy a solar system, you probably don't want to be in that system when it happens.
The more I think about this Starkiller the more I'm shaking my head. It's the hyperbole of superweapons. Even more ridiculous than the star trek red matter.

Yeh, I'm with you. I want my Sci Fi completely grounded in reality.... dogs not wookies all the way for me!!!
I'm not saying that it needs to be realistic. It just doesn't need to be extreme. The enterprise doesn't need to be a submarine. Superman doesn't have to fly around the earth to turn back time and superweapons don't need to continually one up each other in death toll.
That sort of thing makes me think that the writers are on redbull and amphetamines.

What kind of endgame is blowing up a solar system?

So the EU giving us a hyperspace-utilizing "Galaxy Gun" is okay, Lucasfilm getting rid of the EU is a horrible thing, but when the filmmakers take something from the EU and make it canon and plausible, it's ridiculous? This is what people mean when they say some people are never pleased. Again, how about we wait til we actually see the movie, and how Starkiller Base is presented, before condemning it as a lame story mechanic? It makes sense. These are the same people that named spaceships "Star Destroyers" and a planet-destroying space station the "Death Star". "Starkiller" Is perfectly in keeping, and it's tech that the EU has demonstrated has been around for who knows how long. The Corellian star system was constructed by some long-forgotten race using a hyperspace tractor beam now called Centerpoint Station. Hyperspace travel has been a thing in the Star Wars universe for over 25,000 years. How is it implausible that someone at some point figured out how to use hyperspace as a medium/conduit for an offensive weapon?

On the other hand, JJ actually cares about Star Wars as it originally was, and his usual coterie of hack writers are nowhere near this film (coughOrciandKurtzmancoughcough). Plus he's partnered with Kasdan and I'm sure they're receiving tight oversight from Disney -- it's hard to argue that this is in any way analogous to the Star Trek situation.
JJ is selling a product he was hired to make. He may care about Star Wars as it "originally was" or as it is now... that doesn't make necessarily make him the right herald for these films... just as much as he was for the Trek films. You can blame "hack" writers for his other "flaws" - but, the simple fact is those were his people and he had final say.

....and Disney purchased Star Wars to make money from it. I don't want that to mean that they're going through the motions to simply appease fanboys. I don't want cookie cutter Star Wars - I think we deserve and want more than that. ...and honestly, a lot of what I've seen does seem a bit routine, expected and designed to sate the common fanboy. ...and it seems that it's working - we're already seeing some slap happy fans that couldn't see a thing wrong with this movie if there was a song and dance number in the middle of it.

I like JJ and his movies (I haven't watch the TV series he's produced). As I said, I can see the faults and just how non-Star Trek-ky his Star Trek films were. We can debate the merits of what we know - and that debate will surely continue until well after this movie comes out.

There's plenty of excellent points on both sides of the pro/con aisle... and at times, I agree with all of them.

I think if you have immersed yourself in all the rumors and spoilers, you do get a pretty decent idea of how this film s going to present. There are many elements that are still not known and are pure speculation. Having said that, the story that I have developed in my head is very tight and exciting and makes in universe sense. For what it's worth, it seems to me, as someone as spoiled as i can be at this point, that it's a terrific story and all that remains is how it's executed and acted. Based on the trailer and teasers, we get a glimpse of that and to me it looks like they nailed it.

John Viggnochi of Disney Interactive Studios was interviewed the other day and he has read the entire TFA script and was extremely excited by it. Now, he does work for the company, but almost universally people in the industry who have read the story have been full of praise. So that's a bit more tangible evidence they have a great product. At this point if there were real problems with the film, we likely would have heard rumblings to that effect.

I think there are far more reasonable reason to be very positive about the film then pessimistic at this point.

Sometimes this thread kind of reminds me of "Kelly's Heroes", you know, that ever pessimistic Moriarty popping up with " all those negatives waves man!"
As you can guess its one of my favorite films. I'd love a Star Wars film with a similar treatment where somebody says "The only way we can keep those AT-AT's busy is to let them shot holes in us!" or "The only weak point in Walker is its ass!". They could be raiding some Imperial banking reserve behind the galactic lines etc etc etc. Vin Diesel could play Savalas "Big Joe",Simon Peg the radio operater and Hugh Jackman Eastwoods "Kelly" etc.
Ok day dreaming over.
I hear what people are saying, particularly as I've seen "Spectre" recently. But I urge everbody to have little faith still. That super weapon looks a bit more focused than a "Death Star". A hyperspace link must exist, if that red plasma bolt is the result of whats fired from it and it seems to have impacted on a "limited" area rather than a whole planet. JJ does run a risk by being somewhat by running too close to the source material but it does give it a more focused storyline bearing in mind all the other changes . But the fact he is such an SW fan makes me think what ever they have done its going to be something they HAD to be happy with and that makes me feel a bit more optimistic .
So as Oddball said to Moriarty " why don't you dig how beautiful today is and say something righteous and hopeful for a change". I don't think JJ ,Lucasfilm and Disney will let us down too much.
And as a SW fan I've got to admit I felt a huge surge of respect for them for letting that guy see "The Force Awakens" early. It says so much about everybody involved as well as the everyone who asked that he could watch it ,facing what he does. Thats what being a true Star Wars fan is and I hope that he makes it with the rest of us to see the final edit of the big screen this Xmas.

PS!!!!!!
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwww, just saw that trailer link. Thanks for the post jayutmb!!!! I yelled so loud the dog ran out of the room!!! You made my day!!!!!

I want to also say the shot of the sunset with the TIEs is freaking awesome. One of the coolest shots in SW I've EVER seen.

The international trailer is so much cooler than the US trailer.

New Japanese Ep VII trailer with additional footage

Just saw an article on Kotaku about a new Japanese trailer for Ep VII. Looks like about 50% new footage. Nothing major in the way of story except for one interaction between Ray and another character that I hadn't seen before, everything just seems like exttensions on what we've already seen.

Awesome shot of the Tie fighters against the sun though
