Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

I know we've all seen lots of these trailer mashups, but I edited this one and it's got some fun surprises that the others don't...
I liked it, but there were quite a few moments when the music drowned out the dialogue and I couldn't understand what the characters were saying.

Thanks! There's definitely room for improvement, but I reworked what I could accomplish in a reasonable amount of time. You're not wrong in recognizing that the mix didn't get a lot of love...

It was definitely a blast to dig through and play with the footage. The whole thing was re-edited shot by shot. If you find a recognizable sequence and pay enough attention you'll notice the ways in which it's different. I aimed to include slightly different looks at familiar moments, like rearranging the order in which Rey enters the ruined Star Destroyer or stretching Finn's helmet removal by using the two takes/angles they've used cut together:

There are shots from the US teasers, the full trailer, the Korean teaser, the SDCC presentation, and more. I included OT music and SFX. I grabbed a line from John Boyega's "trailer reaction video," when he says "c'mon, Solo." That's probably one you had trouble hearing clearly.

The most fun elements were quick VFX tricks to add some "new" shots to the mix. I took the R2 and Hammill interview footage from the SDCC reel and composited them with a hood and some sparks to add a second shot of Luke. He's not perfect, but it was fun to see him:

I replaced JJ and crew in the Falcon's cockpit:

And my personal favorite: the reverse shot of the Falcon's hallway lighting up (complete with ESB Falcon power-up sound) to show the reverse angle of the "Chewie, we're home" line. The effect was created using the static SDCC reel shot of the fully lit hallway:

There are plenty of other custom touches but you'd have to be very familiar with what's been released to recognize them, I imagine. This definitely gave me an appreciation for even the simple mashups. It's a ton of work to do this stuff well - stripping music/sfx from behind dialogue that you need to move to a new spot, replacing SFX for rearranged footage... It really adds up quickly!

I have pet theory right now that Starkiller Base will turn out to actually belong to the Resistance, and not the First Order. That the rebels had made some sacrifices along the way that they shouldn't have. Not much to back that up, except that an early draft of Return of the Jedi featured a giant laser on a moon that was controlled by the rebels. I'll admit there's already evidence against this, like the official entry on starwars.com calling the base a First Order Stronghold... so I don't know. Just a thought.

I definitely don't think things are going to be as black and white as they used to be.

Stephen Colbert said the same thing.

Frankly, I would love a story arc at some point where the jedi and the sith have to team up because ANYONE force sensitive was being exterminated. So it's a war of faith vs. secular (which actually makes a lot of sense, considering how much war in the galaxy has been between the two sides of the force)
