Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It isn't sad... It would actually make some sense! Who better to be a bad guy than luke? It would actually make for some tough story telling and blow away a lot of fans....

Yes ,it would be (!) sad. Very, very sad.

Who is the target audience? Is it still kids, or is it adults with a taste for cynical tragedies?

The OT was Lukes story. Not Vaders. It was about the heroes (!) journey. Helping his father was just the final task. Besting his father on a different level than Freud meant, but its still part.of growth.

Now showing that Luke probably does ultimately fail in the end is IMO like seeing a real life father/mentor/hero show unforgiveable character flaws.

And you know why I do not want to see this in a new Star Wars movie?
Because it's NOT REAL LIFE!

Star Wars is IMO Escapism at its best, a means to escape reality for a few hours. On so many levels.

I personally do not want to see a flawed hero In Star Wars.
Give me a flawed.Batman or an alcohol addicted Tony Stark or an insecure Spiderman any time. But NO Luke Skywalker, please!

Because KIDS can't get the inherent messages!!! They take that stuff at eye value, and you jnow whats the best indication for that? Movies with broken heroes usually are pg13 or older.

I had already.asked it in his thread, and the few answers to the question of how they felt about Anakin was that they dont like him anymore. No "poor Annie, but I can see that he was miaguided by the sith lords". It is way.over their heads.

Although the OT had its adults oriented moments, kids easily related to all of the movies.
I'd love to see it kept that way.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think the OT was a LOT darker than people give it credit for. Viewed through eight year old eyes it's an optimistic adventure romp, but viewed as an adult, I see a fall from innocence so profound that a man is forced to kill his own father. That's incredibly sad, to see Luke's transformation from wide-eyed farm boy to the weary Jedi who stands at his father's funeral pyre.

That is true and exactly what I was talking about. Due to the clear roles of the characters ( no "matter of perspective" bs or double-crossing etc.) it´s easy for the kids to follow, but complex enough for adults to not lose interest, no, on the contrary..

I love ANH as an adult and as a kid, although at first it was "my version" of SW since I knew everything about it since I was 7 years old, but saw it not before I was 13 (there was a time before VCR´s) and I do vividly remember how disappointed I was with ESB as a kid, but I love it as an adult. Loved ROTJ, and ... well ... I still like it, just not as much as ANH and ESB.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

In regards to kids always being the target audience, I agree SW doesn't need an excessive amount of angst. However, a new generation wouldn't have all this baggage we carry of Luke as the hero. They likely don't have a strong connection to Luke at all. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega will be there heroes.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Hope he brings some new stuff this time, hardly seems worth bringing such a great composer in, then asking him to trot out the same stuff he wrote decades ago.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Blasphemer!!!

Well Williams, like Wagner, works a lot with themes and leitmotives, I admire him precisely for his ability to compose new stuff while being able to weave in familiar themes, sometimes very noticeably so, and sometimes in a very subtle way.
I wouldn't worry to much. If anyone can do it, then him. I just hope there'll be less choirs than in the prequel soundtracks.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

He has all sorts of new characters to write themes for as he did in the two previous trilogies while using some old stuff as touchstones.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Yeah..It'll be great, look at the previous scores..... New characters = new themes,.....the more new characters the more new stuff

John Williams score for the last two prequel films were not as great as the earlier movies mainly because the films were edited right to the last minute,.....so less sweeping score,...& reuse of earlier work to fit scenes

As regard to the Luke rumours, I have no problem with the character slipping to the Dark Side,.....his character was already darker in ROTJ, wearing black...force choking etc
....Once you start down the Dark path...etc,,,,,his anger revealed at the end of the fight with Vader....Palpatines approval and encouragement of his anger display shows that the first steps were taken.....Luke didn't have all those years of training from child hood like Obi-Wan or even his father did, he still wasn't prepared to withstand the temptations ,....I think the rot set in and theres nothing he could do about it

Agreed, he DID start down the dark path. More than once the Obi-Wan, Emperor, and Vader made the reference that he could not escape his destiny, or it was his destiny. Maybe he was able to resist in ROTJ...but that isn't his ultimate destiny.

That may be true to a great extent for this generation. But does that mean it is okay to sacrifice one other generation´s heroes and nullify their positive experiences whle growing up?

Okay, I just thought that those fans who absolutely LOVE the EU may feel the same way ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I think us older fans are better equipped to emotionally appreciate a more complex resolution for Luke. And chances are he will be redeemed before the end.

force choking? when did Luke do any force choking? and wearing black is no big deal.. a bunch of Jedi wore black in the prequels... I don't know that there was any "jedi wardrobe rules" or even a jedi wardrobe catalog available at the time of Luke's journey... he probably found something in the rebel goodwill store! :D

Oh Wait! the Gamorean Guards!!!! ya, he did do a slight of hand and the guards put their hands to their throats.. hmmmm never really put that together... cool!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

He choked a Gamorrean Guard just after he entered Jabba's palace, didn't he?
ya, if you look at my post you will see I added that a few minutes later after I posted that question... been a while since I've seen it and forgot the gamorean reached for their throats when Luke did the jedi hand wave. :D

Really up to that point in the films (apart from TIE pilots) the only character to wear all black was Vader,.....and seeing leaked images of Luke in that costume (Blue Harvest) there was contemplation that perhaps he'd turned to the Dark Side.....even back then

even back then Mark Hamill went into the costume fitting surprised to see all black and also thought he was going to turn to the dark side having not seen the script at that point!
