Re: Star Wars Episode VII
Seriously. If a 20-second long clip that has literally nothing to do with the movie is going to ruin your whole viewing experience, maybe cinema just isn't your gig. But I guess some folks are all about first impressions to set the mood. I get that. Seems a little excessive though. What's next? "Sorry, but it just won't be SW unless they play trailers for Superman and Dawn of the Dead first"
It's funny. I started thinking about this issue of "It's not Star Wars without [thing from previous films.]" And in a sense, I think this actually encapsulates a big part of the problem the filmmakers have for the new trilogy (and had with the PT, too). You have to walk this very fine, almost invisible line between bringing people something that feels new and fresh, combined with the same "feel" that let's them say "Ok, yeah, that's Star Wars."
I think this is an inherent problem in any remake or reboot or sequel. The closer you get to the original, the more reason people have to say "Well why'd you bother even making a sequel if it's just the same damn movie?" But the further away you go, the more reason people have to say "What the hell does this have to do with the franchise?"
I don't think it's impossible to strike that balance, but with a property like Star Wars, I think the degree of difficulty is extremely high. Much of this, I think, has to do with fan myopia. People cannot really conceive of Star Wars beyond what has already happened. The emotional beats, the basic structure of the underlying conflicts, the character archetypes, all of it seems to be reheated from the last movie's leftovers each time fans say "They should do blah blah blah" or "It won't be Star Wars without..." You see this same phenomenon with a lot of fan fiction: it's myopic. It doesn't think beyond the confines and contours established by the previous entries.
So, the new trilogy "must" have the Sith, and Jedi, and a galactic civil war against some empire-like empire thing, and the three original heroes, and Chewbacca, and Lando, and a resurrected Boba Fett, and the ****ing ghost of Darth Vader, and, and, and....I mean, at what point do you just say "Well, this is just silly" and pop in the OT DVDs? :lol
Personally, I think it can be Star Wars if it takes place in the Star Wars universe. That universe is quite distinct to me, and is pretty well established. I mean, the Trek universe focuses on more than just Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, and the Enterprise, right? So, why not Star Wars? And yes, that means including your precious new trilogy, not just the spinoff movies which apparently are merely going to be MORE prequels like "Young Han Solo Buys a Swoop Bike," and "Yoda's First Years on Dagobah."
But I guess it's not Star Wars without........
