Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Post-release)

No, I understand that. But JW fell $1.1 billion short of Avatar. So even if TFA has legs equal to JW--which it won't--add an extra $200 million for China to TFA's haul, and it will come up nearly a billion dollars short of Avatar. TFA's just not gonna have the legs to even make a run at Avatar, what with so many people hating the film.

The Wook

yeah but TFA will still make more money for the company in merch so it did not break EVERY record ever made it will still make Disney more money than anything every has . and with an unknown number of movies to come .

Unless I get a cash prize for hitting the money mark, I don't care about the record. Seems kind of silly to be worrying about it. I'm not a stock holder so it will have no effect on my life. I'm more worried about finding my Captain Phasma Black Series 6" figure at retail.

Here's a little more about SW:TFA and the box office (can TFA beat Avatar?).

First and foremost, I find it a bit hard to believe that it's taking so long to beat JW. I don't recall that much hype about JW - it was a fun movie and sure, it had some buzz... but, not like this; not like this at all. I know the world market is considerably different, but I still just don't recall JW having the type of crowds and such that I see that TFA is getting. But, that's purely based on personal experience.

It took JW 12 days to get to a billion (with China), it took TFA 11 (without China) - JW went on to make $1,670,400,180 vs. TFA's $1,090,572,329 (without China) so far.

JW went on to make $228,020,000 in China - if TFA makes the same in China it's at $1,318,592,329 - short of JW's overall box office and well short of Avatar/Titanic.

I do think the difference will be longevity. TFA isn't showing much in way of slowing down and there isn't a whole lot coming out in the immediate future that looks to threaten its dominance (Hateful Eight and the rest of the Oscar buzz train will take some; but, as far as more family fare - RIde Along 2 on the 15th? Dirty Grandpa on the 22nd? Kung Fu Panda 3 on the 29th? ) - it's a given that it's money take will dwindle and all the movies coming out over the next month or so will eat into TFA's revenue. TFA should dominate throughout January, typically a dead month anyhow - and into February where Deadpool and a few others will cut into it deeper.

At this point, no one really knows - I think it has a great chance (as a lot of people seem to agree with). I think most of us want to see TFA at the top spot - I know I'll be seeing a few more times.

I agree. I've never equated a film's box office haul with its quality. Sometimes they correspond, sometimes they don't.

The Shawshank Redemption did terrible at the box office and it's a pretty good film. The best ever, actually, but that's neither here nor there.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with the box office. I remember the days when Lucas and Spielberg had like 8 of the top ten films per box office. Then stupid Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters came along and ruined everything. I was always big into the Oscars too. It made me so mad when Star Wars and Raiders didn't win best picture. Or John Williams didn't win every time he was nominated Even when he didn't have a chance. Later I realized none of that mattered, not at all. And I had anger issues, so that played into it. Stupid parents divorce!

So, Doc, what do I owe you?

Ahhh, to be a kid again.

That's where we disagree - I think TFA's legs are potentially much stronger than JW. The big question for me at least is just how much will the "dead months" of winter bite into that longevity? JW lost the title early into its run - it was the #2 movie by it's third week but was still grossing a pretty healthy amount. By JW week 3, Inside out and a few other movies had come out to take healthy bites out of it's run.

TFA has the hype and buzz to carry it, much more than JW could dream of - I think the biggest question is just how much of the box office is going to dive during the typically dead Jan-Feb-Mar stretch?

The Chinese TFA buzz is pretty strong, too - they are pretty in tune with international audiences (and looks to soon overtake the US as the largest movie market). It's getting huge social media numbers and promotion is in full swing there now - Disney is targeting China big time. Furious 7 had a similar social media buzz and it got $180 million opening weekend in China and ended up with nearly $400 million China (more than its US take).

So, there is some strong indication that TFA could do better than JW in China. But, it's still a coin toss.

JW is no where near as good a film as TFA , I won't go see it again in the cinema if I got free tickets, also there is a wider spread of age groups that want to see the latest Star Wars , you've the 70's nerds ( 8 year old me) then the 00's (my nephews) and the clone war nuts ( my son) , no other film has such a wide demographic of ages wanting to see it, even titanic had people in their 20,s and up to 60,s , this is still nowhere near Star Wars appeal.
I have heard so many people who are Sci-fi fans who were saying , I'll wait until it quiets down .....they may have to wait a few weeks .
And others that watch everything for free online who never go to the cinema , and their going ???

lastly a question on avatar , was this not released twice in the cinema , surely it's gross should be for either release not both together ?

Yeah, really. I'm not getting a lot of the criticism to be honest. It seems like some people are trying really hard to not like the movie. It's getting blasted for things a lot of other movies, including the OT, get a pass for.

Excaclty.

Lol. It's just that it's the other way round. Most like or love the movie. I don't personally know anyone that wasn't happy. There's a very vocal group of JJ hating trolls all over the net that just can't get over their cynical adulthood and hatred for anything JJ.

Love this pic. :)

The question i think needs to be was it intended to be Luke's. I looked that up first thing after I got home. I swear i counted 5 ticks over the ear, but the ear decals themselves are different. Something blue with the number 78 (i think) in film whereas lukes is sort of a yellow diamond shape....
I think Luke's had some black and yellow stripes just over the forehead, which are absent on Rey's.

Without a doubt, Avatar remains one of the most overrated movies I've ever seen. Without all the whiz-bang CGI, it literally would not have had a leg to stand on. I'm continually amazed that it did as well as it did.

I have a strong feeling Avatar 2 will do OK and then by the 3rd one it will barely make its budget back.

Just a guess, but I get a feeling everyone will be pretty Avatar'ed out by the time the next one comes out.

I was just referring to the nitpicking in general, not anything you said. The movie is not above criticism but the hate it is getting on social media is just ridiculous.

Agreed. I went into the film knowing very little and avoided spoilers. I had high expectations, but that didn't distract me from the actual film. I honestly sat in the theater like a kid in aww. For me it was amazing. Sure there are things I could criticize like you said, but overall I think this film is my favorite of the Star Wars franchise. It's a tough sell, but it's kind of how I pictured the prequels to be, until I saw TPM for the first time.

The only nitpick I will ever have any issue with, and it's a nitpick mind you because as I said, it wasn't anything that turned me off of the film. The Starkiller being destroyed. Call me a sucker for the dark side, but I had hoped they were going to give you that same glimmer of hope (no pun intended) that ANH gave yet this time, the Starkiller is only damaged long enough for escape, not destroyed. And the dark side still has this pure evil of a station with Kylo Ren in charge. Again, nitpick, JJ still made it work for me. I was not disappointed at all.
