Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Post-release)

Of course people have a right to their opinions... but when they make statements that have very little basis in reality, they ought to expect some flak.

For example, saying that the prequels are "Head and Shoulders above" TFA is positively ridiculous. The poster may really like thge Prequels... and he may really dislike TFA. but that doesn't change the fact that TFA is widely popular with the majority of people here, and that while most of us acknowledge that TFA has weak points (as ALL films do) we still generally don't regard it as being less well made than the prequels.

There are things in the prequels that i like... i would never completely discard them. However, TFA is far from being beneath the quality of the Prequels.

The point is that it was an inflammatory statement... not just someone sharing their opinion. They had more intent behind it than simply giving their opinion, so it's silly to pretend otherwise. many others here HAVE simply given their opinion...THAT is just fine.
For me, it's not that the prequels are better. They aren't.

But they are at least unique and ambitious. They are purely space opera. I work in opera and I can assure you that acting is the least important aspect.

Whereas, TFA feels simple and derivative. There may be fewer problems with it. But they are the same problems and tropes that plague all of the modern blockbuster action films.

You know what? I think I just figured it out. TFA feels like an action film whereas the prequels feel like space operas.

Saw it tonight for the second time...

Is Snap Wexley (Greg Grunberg) the Porkins for the post-ROTJ trilogy?

Personally I felt ANH was like an action/adventure movie more than a space opera. Of course that is just my opinion, but when i first saw it (at age 9 or so, two years after it's release) I definitel didn't get an opera vibe from it... it seemed all action and mostly adventure.... which I loved--and still do. :thumbsup

So... was it my imagination or were they turning on the lightsaber using the wrong button?
Yeah, I commented on that way back in post #2016:

...Also, let's take an informal poll. Who here freaked out when they saw Finn activate Luke's lightsaber that first time by pressing the big red button? :D

And followed up a bit in post #2130:

The way I see it, you have to put yourself in Finn's position. He's holding a device he's never seen or used before, but he has a vague idea about what it's supposed to do and he's trying to get it to do that. So he's looking at it, he sees a big red button, and he pushes the button to see what happens. That doesn't seem unreasonable, and any one of us would probably have done the same thing if we were him. Now, the fact that the lightsaber fired up seems to conflict established canon, and I don't think we ever saw Anakin, Luke, or Han fire it up by doing that, but I don't know if there's anything out there that says you can't fire it up that way. I don't know enough about Anakin's/Luke's lightsaber to make that determination, so I don't know if it's wrong or simply new. But when I saw it, my first thought was, "Oh, the RPF is going to go crazy over that," and then nobody mentioned it. :lol...

It didn't get much of a reaction; I guess the disgruntled fans had bigger issues to discuss. :)

My daughter (who previously to TFA HATED Star Wars) turned to me at the moment Finn lit up the saber and not so silently whispered "Hey! That's not how you turn it on! Right!?"

Oh and side note, after we left the theater suddenly they were "our lightsabers", according to my kid.

Speaking of Max von Sydow, I know he had more lines in The Force Awakens than Mark Hamill, but I wonder which of them got more screen time. :unsure

Yeah... I wasn't going to read back 5 pages... let alone 64. ;)

"The journey to the right side has begun ..."
So I guess I WAS on to something last time you brought your kid up, right? :D My gf´s daughter is becoming more and more of a SW fan, she wanted to rewatch (!) the OT to freshen up some knowledge :) But that was thrown out of the window because of Inside Out :/
