Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Post-release)

I've been having a discussion with someone about something, and wanted to see what the general consensus here was-

Did you think it was supposed to be clear and obvious from the start that Snoke was a hologram, or did you think he was a giant being, or did you feel it was ambiguous? I don't know if it had some influence whether you kept up with spoilers beforehand or whatever.

I didn't think it was clear he was a hologram until a little later when we saw the hologram flicker, because to me he didn't look anything like an OT hologram, he was opaque, fitting in as part of the scene with the chair on the ground, the same lighting as the scene, and he's even blocking the light rays coming in from the roof, instead of the transparent blue glowy look with scanline effect of the OT, with the floating disembodied jittery look. Even with the context of the Vader/Palpatine parallel I think it was at best intentionally ambiguous whether he was a hologram or a giant.

Someone else argues that it was instantly obvious he was a hologram, because his hologram looked exactly like the holograms in the OT.

What did everyone else think on first viewing?

It was impossible for me to be objective going into it, because I had read certain spoliers which stated that the actors were reacting to Andy Serkis on a 25 foot platform. So when I went to see TFA--and Snoke came on--I thought "He really IS 25 feet tall! How can that be...? Oh.... he's a hologram"

So yes, I *did* realize it... but it took a moment or two for my brain to register.

Right now I am beginning to doubt he even saw the film, if he thinks Poe was a more important character than Finn.

I wouldn't say "more" important. I definitely liked Poe... and I love that we have a crack pilot to cheer for. He also seems like a very likeable character. But I wouldn't give him more import than Finn. I'd say--for myself-- they are about tied.

The one moment of hers that's still hard for me is the fight. The pause is too long and it makes it seem like she was losing, until Kylo reminds her that the force is a thing, then shes like "oh yeah! I can totally swing this weapon I'm holding back and forth! Why didn't I try that sooner?"

How does she even know that Rey is the lead?"

Rey was fighting for her life during most of that battle, and if you watch you'll see that she was retreating through 80% of it. It was only when she was backed up against a cliff and was ready to be vanquished by Kylo that (when he mentions the Force) she opens her heart to it and seems to become renewed and galvanized. It *could* have been a shorter pause... but then I can tell you that when I was watching it (really, EVERY time that I watch it) I am feeling it right along with her, and that extra second or two helps me to get on the same page with how she's feeling and I am totally IN for the rest of the fight. I love that moment.

Leia knows because she is Force Sensitive, and so is Rey. It was apparent that Leia felt it when Han died. For all we know, she knows that Rey saw it too, and she is drawn to her so that they may both mutually comfort one another. Besides, we still don't know if Leia already knows who Rey is, and just isn't telling.

Luke talked about being a pilot - we never saw it until he was in an X-Wing, up until that point - all we saw from him was driving a landspeeder.

Rey also talked about being a pilot - we never saw it until she was in the Falcon, up until that point - all we saw from her was driving a speeder.

I don't think Rey ran because she didn't want powers - I felt she didn't want to stop believing her family was coming back for her on Jakku. She said she needed to get back Jakku - that was her goal, to get back there and to continue to wait for her family. The Force tricks were just another potential hurdle in her getting back home. That doesn't make her less a (ahem) badass.

What you do leave out, is how did she know about the good ol' Jedi mind trick? While not totally inconceivable - it's a stretch that young lady stranded on Jakku for many years would have info about that.

Reminded me a bit of Luke in his X-Wing with Ben telling him to "Use the force, Luke - let go" and Luke switching off his targeting computer. To me it was the same idea - but, we no force voices.

agree again, JD. You and I are getting more on the same page as time goes on. :thumbsup

Am I offended when "a man" says "My Dear"? No... not strictly speaking.

Am I offended when that man uses it in a way that comes off as condescending...absolutely.

Listen... I'm not a shrinking violet. And as such, I feel that I deserve at least the amount of respect one peer lends to another. You might have said "It isn't Sexism, it's Science" and left it at that. You felt compelled to throw in "My Dear" as a way of saying "I'm far smarter than you are, and you ought to go back into the kitchen and find something worthwhile to spend your energy on in there".

THAT is why Misogyny continues in the world... because some Men (and I do stress SOME) are either completely unaware of how they come off when they do this sort of thing, or they reckon we (as Women) are too dull to grasp the subtlety of what they are implying.

You ought to have stated it without the "My Dear" thrown in. That is a term of endearment... which is a privilege handed from one to the other when BOTH feel that a sufficient rapport exists between them that such is warranted. Not so, in this case.

In my opinion, you're being hypersensitive. Having said that, I think your position is very well articulated in your post. You're obviously an intelligent girl, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I say "my dear" to plenty of girls with whom I have no relationship or rapport--total strangers: "Let me hold that door for you, my dear.". And it's always greeted with a huge smile and thank you. Sometimes they'll even affect a southern belle accent and reply, "Why thank you, kind gentleman.". I don't know what kind of local norms and mores exist in Flint, MI, where you reside, but here in Whale's Vagina, CA, it is not necessary to already have a rapport with a girl to call her, "My dear.".

I probably would've called you "my dear" earlier in this thread, if I was 100% sure you were female. You see, I made the mistake once previously with a member here, thinking the member was a girl. The member's handle is Lynn TXP, and eventually he corrected me regarding his gender and we laughed about it. So, I've tried to be conscientious since then to not make assumptions about members' genders. And so even though I assumed you, Kristen, were the pretty girl in your avatar, I wanted to keep that assumption private, by not using a term like "my dear", until I was certain of your gender.

Listen, I don't go around calling every girl I see in the physical world or encounter online "my dear". But I thought if I had just written, "It's not sexism, it's science.", that would've come off as cold. So I threw in a term of endearment to soften it.

I hope some day we'll have a sufficient rapport in your mind, that my soft attempts to endear myself to you won't have the opposite effect.

The Wook :)

As well you should. But sadly, your gender was simply an 'easy target' but some other subject could have been used instead if trying to demean or tick you off.
It's the internet. People can (and often do) write stuff they'd never say in person because we now have more than one generation that thinks that there isn't (or shouldn't be) any consequences for anything you write online, other than a specific threat against someone or someplace.
I recently gave a talk to some high school classes on something and I talked to a few of them before and afterward. I couldn't believe how many truly felt that anything written online should come with no ramifications. I told a small group of them about me encountering a very obnoxious troll and how I calmly told him I was going to break him in half and the troll's reaction to that (I'm almost sure the guy pee'd his pants). They all looked at me like I was insane. "Uncool," I was told by more than one. One even said, "Don't you know that what's written online stays online?" Almost all agreed with that. I said, "Yeah, look, there are people out there who will carve you a new one if they get ticked off enough by your trolling. Uncool or not, there are consequences to anything you say or write and if you troll someone, you might run across them in real life. And you have to be ready for what they might do to you, either physically or legally."
They didn't get it at all. A teacher overheard me and said, "We try to teach them exactly what you just said, but these teens just don't get it."
But had it not been demeaning to women, it'd been something else. You can count on that.

Hopefully it's not just the water up there. Talk about an evil Empire... :(

:p

fortunately, we have filters, and we use them. Lots of others here do not... though the county is distributing free filters, lead test kits and bottled water to residents in the worst areas.

The house that we've just bought has new plumbing, so at least I know that my home isn't contributing to our demise. The city's delivery system, however... who can know?

But no...water contamination aside, each note that you've hit in those last posts I completely agreed with.

Leia knows that Han died, yes. That much was made clear.

but remember, this is the first time in this movie she and Rey have met. Rey was already gone with Leia first showed up. All she's actually been told up to this point is that she's Finns friend who he wants to rescue, but who takes a back seat to the mission.

She probably DOES know Rey's parents...simply because that's how Star Wars works, lots of coincidences. But that wouldn't help her recognize her after many years and only seeing her as a small child. In seven movies the force has never worked that way for anyone, Vader didn't even know who his own kids were. The most they've ever been shown to do with new people is detect that here is someone also with the force.

Besides, even if you reached for it...Leia uses the force to connect the small child she once knew to the adult woman who didn't go with them, but came back in the ship instead of her dead ex husband...it would still be weird to walk right past Chewie to hug her without a word. Very weird.

I mean, it was a little weird he didn't hug her afterwards but it just isn't that big a deal. I assume he was more concerned about the urgency of a grievously wounded and possibly dying Finn to be too concerned about a hug.

Your post reminds me. One thing I would love to see for the next film is the falcon with a full team aboard. I'd love to see rey and chewie up front with two gunners (Finn and..?) and a medical droid aboard.

Honestly I don't think we are meant to take away anything at all from that, I just think it was an editing choice not an effort to suggest Chewie is mad at Leia or vice verse.

Yeah, there was a lot more going on with that score than I originally thought. It's in a different vein than what we're used to, more mysterious and less bombastic, but perhaps a lot more going on under the surface than in the past.

Hey I just thought of something. Remember that pic of Adam in the Xwing costume? Could it be they already filmed some flashback scenes?
