Exactly! They tried to show what buddies they were in ROTS, with all the little cheesy jokes and quips, but it was too little too late. Overall in the PT, they never seemed to like each other. ROTS had a rushed feel to it and I think it was in part because most of the first movie was wasted time. So much of what was in it we didn’t actually need.
With a slower buildup and against the backdrop of The Clone Wars, which maybe was already raging, maybe Anakin is too arrogant in his abilities, and there starts being clues and rumblings that he’s going a little too far. People are turning up dead. There begin to be signs he’s abusing his abilities. He’s dabbling with the darker side of things to try to be a “better” Jedi. He thinks he can control it but the allure is too delicious. Forget all the sappy mommy issues, etc.
I would’ve had Anakin’s final fall to the darkside be at the end of Ep.2 or first act of 3, with the remainder being Obi-wan trying to track him down and actually make an effort to save him. As it is, Obi-wan is basically like “welp, you gotta die!”
Maybe Obi-wan expresses his concerns to General Organa, whom he serves with (and is only a senator later, after military retirement) and he has a bigger role to play too. If they wanted to explore a broader intrigue, maybe they also have misgivings about General Tarkin, a favorite of the chancellor? Perhaps also include Owen Lars (maybe as a grumpy, gruff but lovable Republic pilot, etc?) as part of our core group too. Anakin, Obi-wan, Padme and Owen could’ve been our PT heroes. At the end it would feel more natural that Owen agrees to take Luke to his wife on his distant home planet of Tatooine and Organa agrees to take Leia and quietly host a terminally ill Padme, who will die a few years after the kids were born.
Well I’m rambling now…lol!
