Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi (tv series)

Darth Lars , exactly! Just a little mind trick on the weak. Sure, your dueling skills are rusty but you have been trained since you were a youngling. I understand he has lost faith after all that transpired. But even if he “shut himself off from the force” (like Luke) it seems saving Leia would be a heck of a motivator to reconnect. But I don’t think he’s completely shut himself off because he keeps trying to connect with Qui-Gon. Still quite a few episodes to go, I’m sure things will change soon.

When i was a kid in the 80s my very first lightsaber was a Darth Vader vented one, that when you swung it around, it made the whoosh sound...(Not installed with CFX, but with a flash light it was close enough...lol). Darth Vader never was a favorite of mine. Yet, no matter when i see him, it's like the best part for me, why is that? In Rogue One...best part for sure. He was awesome in all of the OT...period. It is a monumental task to even be "as good" as the original. I honestly felt Darth Vader was pretty awesome here. He had a real Jason Voorhees vibe going on...lol. Idk, it's taking years for me but i guess Darth Vader just ignites something in me. If i "search my feelings" i think it's because it is just a callback to ANH...i'm sure i'm not alone in that thought.

Unless ... Obi-Wan is avoiding use of The Force because the inquisitors would be able to sense when anyone is using it for anything.

But I think that would break movie-canon, as it would mean that Vader (being the the person who had trained the inquisitors and kept a check on their powers) would have been able to easily sense Obi-Wan's mind-tricks on the Death Star, and not vaguely sensed Obi-Wan as a person.

Interestingly, there seems to be a lot less discussion regarding this series than TBOBF. Maybe because we were so curious about a character that had 5 minutes of movie screen time and all the potential plotlines (most of which never came to fruition)? Obiwan feels like we are just along for the ride but oddly less invested in what happens because we have preconceived ideas of him (and Luke and Leia) from ANH. Also, all these characters are still around in ten years, so we know nothing really awful will happen to them despite a few plot twists.

Ben is not using the force. He is frustrated, lost and feeling he is being led into a trap at every turn as if he path is linear. Unfortunately it seems the editing isn't really making that apparent. Things he can do as Obi Wan are simple to deal with the situation at hand where Ben is left with sticks and stones.

The moment Obi Wan uses the force he is exposed for what he is with a big red target over his head as if it's a game hack used by the baddies. Again simple things that could be explained with simple line of dialogue or PTSD dream scene inclusion.

Lots of issues in this third episode, again mostly editing. How does Reva get ahead of Leia in the same tunnel? As prior mentioned characters doing stupid things to advance the story such as Ben calling Leia in front of the troopers. The separated by fire is either going to be a major issue or a set up by allowing Ben to escape and expose others. Just as Leia in ANH said the Falcon was being tracked...

When the ground is on fire and Kenobi is being taken away, why didn’t Vader simply walk through the fire? Why didn’t he use the Force to crush everyone except Kenobi? Why didn’t he just crush Kenobi when he captured him with the Force?

In ESB, when Chewbacca was throwing stormtroopers off the freezing chamber platform why did Vader lower Boba Fetts rifle? When the Falcon took off at hyper speed why did Vader just stand there then walk away? Why didn’t Vader pin Luke down with the force instead of dueling him?

If either the hero or the villain is an invincible Superman it makes for super-boring story.

Plus, from reading the Vader comics he usually only goes savage when he’s actually being attacked by an equal who might actually do damage to him. Then he goes ruthless savage to crush them. Most of the time he plays with his prey like a cat plays with a mouse before he eats them. Vader has patience when he knows his opponent is not a threat.

I think a lot of the character work has been decent in this show, but all of the action is weak. Also I’m not one to hang on every single line of the OT, but these guys having a one on one fight 10BBY does undermine their dialogue on the Death Star, and I don’t like that.

Leia seems to have more faith in any given situation than Kenobi and seems to take the lead as far as quips and answers to questions from the storm troopers. This makes Kenobi look terrible, honestly. In ANH, Guinness' Kenobi was wise, patient and witty and in control. Now, in the show, he's being led by a child who will eventually cry out to him, " help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope ". As much as I like little Leia in this series, I'm finding it hard to reconcile the fact that in 3 more episodes that gap will be bridged, especially now that they are separated. This fact alone makes me think they will do another season. There is a lot going on for different character development for it to be completed in 3 more episodes and if it does get completed, the cry will come out that it was rushed and forced. Anyways, being the number 1 debut Disney plus show, it won't be hard to justify further extraction of fan money in exchange for another season.

AnubisGuard and robstyle , I completely understand what you’re saying. I guess I was looking for his abilities to surface when he’s cornered in that room with Flea (and everyone knows who he is) or using a mind trick (which should just confuse the troopers and not expose him, I think?) It does make for a more dangerous situation when the hero is robbed of his full abilities. though.

Unfortunetaly, this is the first episode of all star wars television since Mando s1 that I strongly disliked. Let me first say that I appreciate Deborah Chow & Co's work into this series, but this episode didn't work for me.

The production quality fell short much like the Tragedy episode on Mando. What made me dislike the episode were poor writing choices. The first one that stood out to me was when Ben and Leia were on the farmer truck. When the stormtroopers get on and say they're looking for a Jedi, you'd think they'd be told that the Jedi will have a little girl accompanying him and two: his actual photo. It just seems so bizarre the stormtroopers didn't have that basic information, so the whole scene felt artificial. Also, Ben talks to Leia about Jedi stuff in a very normal-pitched voice. You'd think the truck driver would hear that, right?

Also, I'll leave full judgement towards the end of the show, but I'm not about Ben fighting Vader. I'm still thrown for a loop on the whole conversation in ANH being recontextualized. However, there are three more episodes left so maybe my mind will change. What really stood out to me was the production quality on the Vader v. Ben fight. The general coreography was fine, Ben is rusty, Vader is not, but the backdrop felt too fan-filmy. I get that a lot of Star Wars planets are naturally shot on location, but this one particularly didn't click for me. The end of the fight really confused me however.

The whole Vader burning Obi-Wan alive was so surprisingly grusome. Vader force pulls him into the fire, pushes him away and extinguishes the fire. He then tells stormtroopers to grab Ben but the fire is reignited by that other character. If the stormtroopers can't get him, why can't Vader just extinguish the fire and force pull Ben towards him? We were just shown he could extinguish fire and could force pull Kenobi fine, so why didn't he do it again? If the case why he didn't do it again because he was conflicted, I don't think it was communicated well.

Again, all the best to Deborah and the team, but I felt today's episode was not handled well.

EDIT: My opinion has changed now after further thought. I like the episode now haha

Well for me, the best part of this episode was James Earl Jones' glorious voice. Sooo glad they brought him back once again. Often imitated but never perfected, as far as I'm concerned.

The rest was pretty "meh". Mostly not horrible, mostly not amazing. It just is.

I always thought it was a terrible idea for Obi-wan and Vader to have a prior meetup but figured, if they're gonna do this, they better make it great. This is what they came up with? Really?! That was the big moment Disney seemed content on redoing? Now I'm speaking beyond the very lackluster fight choreography and referring to just the lack of gravitas or drama. Simply the way it was shot was very bland and unimaginative. Also the distinct lack of Force or Vader musical themes is very conspicuous. Also a shame the Empire seems to be lacking in firefighting equipment or a very powerful Force user that could snuff out the flames like he had already done 5 seconds before... if not simply walk through with Sithy impunity. Oh well.

I am glad they at least resisted the temptation of twirly, overthetop PT-style lightsaber choreography but I suspect that could still be coming. If there is another fight with a newly rejuvenated Obi-wan, I especially hope they don't do the super cheesy "battle damaged" Vader strip tease (ala The Force Unleashed and Rebels) where his life support suit apparently serves no purpose as Vader continues to fight on when he should probably be strangling to death. With them insisting on bringing Hayden back, I can't imagine why unless they go that route or are banking heavily on flashbacks with Anakin, which they've not done beyond old PT scenes that already exist.
