ps, Did you ever contemplate using endglow fiberoptics as your stars and adding a twinkling affetc? With that framed space you have it could be done easily..
I'm filling out the wall with the Death Star viewport. I wondered what it would be like to build a lighted control panel. Now that I'm mocking up a design, now I wonder why I didn't make some earlier!
The inspiration is the control panels seen on Han's Carbonite "coffin" and the light/control panels on the walls next to blast doors, like these...
This long 4-foot panel will go under the viewport. It is cut from Sintra. The panel will be angled, and I don't know how to accomplish that yet. For the backlighting, I have a 12 volt stick light that someone gave me about 10 years ago. And I have some more Acrylite white acrylic sheet for the light to shine through.
And I have these little colored tiles. They resemble indicator lights or buttons.
Blowing my mind i have sat and flipped through this thread like 10 times. just amazing. your attention to detail is great. I would totally hire you to build my man cave.thumbsupthumbsupthumbsupthumbsup:
Yep! That's what I needed! That design should be pretty easy to reproduce. Rather than individual light bulbs, I just have a single backlight source. But I think I can repro some of "lines" detail by strategically painting up the Acrylite sheet with dark gray. No clue if latex paint will stay stuck to acrylic sheet. I may hit it with a coat of adhesion promoter spray first. That stuff is a matte finish if I remember correctly. Thanks for the screen caps.
One weekend I'm going to watch the SW movies and try to spot some ceilings. It's time to gather materials for my ceiling... stuff like fat tubes and pipes. Gotta be all lightweight stuff though.
For some reason, I feel guilty if I don't post at least one photo with each post. So here's one. I used those little colored tiles to turn my wife's phone into a Pocket Simon lookalike. And then I left it out for her to find. Well, it shows you the scale of the tiles, anyway.
Tonight I'm making the Death Star lights glow. Eh, why not? It's easy. I have glow-in-the-dark paint in 3 colors. I have white, blue, and a blue-aqua. When I turn off my room lights, I want to see the Death Star "lights" glowing. So far I have only applied some white to the lower half of the sphere. All three colors appear as clear-ish white in normal daylight, so that's good. I used a toothpick to apply the paint and it already has added some sharp detail that my original big blown-up JPG Death Star graphic did not have in the first place.
Here it is by day...
Here it is by night...
I have two more paint colors to add. Ohh it is certainly difficult to take photos of stuff in the dark. I have no clue how to do that properly. Yet another thing I do not know how to do. But it is fun figuring it out.
Another "night" pic with the lower windows glowing, so far...
Here are the three paint colors I have. These come in what are basically 1/2 ounce nail polish bottles.
More work on a lighted panel. I have straightened out the cuts, and then glued on a top and bottom strip. Goop "Plumbing Glue" works great for this PVC-based plastic.
And from the other side..
Next, I will figure out how to make the ends accurately, so they fit into what I have already cut. Then I will cut out the white "lens".
