Star Wars ~ Luke's Saber

You may call it Ep. IV, or A New Hope, but I still call it "Star Wars".

Let me preface this with the fact that I know there have been more of these builds than we can count, but for me, this prop is what it's all about. I was born in 1976. That means that there has never been a time where I was unaware of Star Wars. I grew up wanting to be Luke Skywalker. Every stick, baseball bat, flashlight etc. I touched as a child (and sometimes as an adult) became this lightsaber. So please, bear with me as I finally build my Holy Grail prop. :cool:thumbsup

*********************

It starts, as these things often do, with the "Graflex Inc." Graflex I picked up in the Junkyard a month or so ago. She was a bit on the battered side. The brass connector pins had been ground down, the bakelite internals were broken, the bulb clamp was stretched out and it's pin had been replaced by a nail. There was also some scratching and rust. That part I didn't mind as I never imagined this saber to be in good shape as I watched the film.

All of that is not to say that finally holding the real thing didn't give me a charge, because it did.

To repair the issues mentioned, I also picked up a Graflex Slave.

Then it was on to the other parts.

While trolling ebay I ran across a Graflex 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 carrying case with D-rings that looked, in the pictures at least, to be eerily close. I took a chance.

Close, but no cigar. The size and shape are good, if a touch small, but the brass plating and the clip were just wrong.

Plating can be stripped, and clips can be reshaped. It's a keeper.

Then, of course, there is everybody's favorite calculator. The Exactra 20.
Here's mine.

And a quick shot of my amassed "Saber Stash"

The grips in that pic will be used on the Graflite. I ordered some Saberfreak grips today.

While I wait for them to arrive, I started work with what I have.

Dismantled, cleaned, and polished the Graflex and Slave. Rebuilding the Graflex to the best possible condition. I removed the rectangular washer from the clamp lever.

Then I trimmed and fit the bubble strip.

It's starting to feel like a lightsaber now!

These threads never get old to me. You're right, it is the holy grail. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Awesome. I'll be following this one closely.

I'm collecting parts now for my own holy grail Lightsaber build, but I'm doing the ESB Wampa disarmer.

What did you use to clean and polish your graflex?

I just LOVE this saber above all others. I'm in the same boat, a 1976 baby and this is THE saber for me.

Very nice start. I finished mine a few months ago, and if anything's the same, you'll get that feeling of satisfaction when you complete it.

Thanks every one, glad to see there is still some interest in these. :cool

Mike, you are absolutely right, FB is no place for a build thread. lol

Trappster, good luck on your build, I look forward to seeing it. The ESB is on my list as well, but it will have to wait until I can find a real Kobold clamp that I don't have to sell a kidney to buy.

For cleaning the graflex I used warm soapy water and a soft cloth. I used NOXON 7 to polish the metal.

Congrats. I would rather watch a Graflex saber being built again than all the foam or pepakura IRON MAN builds any day, so you just go on with your bad self. ;)

Excellent built so far . . . and who knows since we still haven't a clear shot of the bottom of the graflex with the D-ring there's no way of telling what the clip looks like and so perhaps the propmakers did the same as you ... clean the patina of the brass color D and clip more to silver to match it with the rest of the graflex 3 Cell :confused

Amen to that, brother!
Good old Star Wars time, memories to latch onto...

I can't imagine anyone getting tired of a saber build, especially this iconic piece. Looking forward to your progress! :):thumbsup

Been meaning to build one of these to accompany my completed years long Vader Heiland build.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Can't wait to watch the progress!

very cool, I used Blast Tech parts for mine, so this is very inspiring. Does the bubble strip slide into the clamp or is it just pinched between?
